PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Officials say protesters in Portland, Oregon repeatedly set fire to a police union headquarters building and were repelled by officers spraying tear gas.A total of 25 people were arrested amid the clashes that lasted into Tuesday morning. Many were charged with interfering with a peace officer and/or disorderly conduct. Police say in a statement that the protesters in a group of about 300 people hurled rocks and bottles at officers and set three fires to the sides of the Portland Police Association Building and one to an awning. All fires were put out late Monday night and early Tuesday morning.Among other things, police say the crowd chanted "burn it down." Many in the crowd reportedly carried shields, wore helmets, gas masks, and body armor.After giving numerous warnings to the protesters, police say they deployed tear gas and used other crowd control munitions to take control of the situation and arrest those who failed to listen to officers.Portland has been gripped by nightly protests for months since the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. 1102

(KGTV) - Students in Poway are trading their notebooks and pencils for needles and thread, as they make teddy bears this holiday season."This is hands on," says 5th Grade teacher Kimberlee Rizzuti. "They're making something. Some of these kids have never held a needle and thread."The 5th Graders at Painted Rock Elementary School do every part of the bear-building by hand, from drawing and cutting patterns to stuffing the bears. Parents help with the sewing machines in class."It's pretty hard, but it's fun to do," says 5th Grader Deacon Tilley.It's a project the school has done for about 35 years. The classes make about 100 bears total, all of which get donated to Interfaith Services of Escondido."We've kind of gotten away from hand made things," says Rizzuti. "This is more of a gift from the heart.""It makes me feel happy because some people don't get a lot of things for Christmas," says 5th Grader Bella Lesagonicz. (KGTV) -- A man is dead following a fatal crash in the 12900 block of Community Road, near Civic Center Drive. The Sheriff's department says a speeding vehicle was driving northbound on Community Road when it hit another vehicle, causing several other crashes. The driver of one vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene and several other people were injured.Community Road was closed in both directions during the initial investigation.The Sheriff's Traffic Accident Reconstruction team was called to the scene and the investigation is ongoing.Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.Video from Sky10 shows the scene of the crash. POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - The memory of Poway synagogue shooting victim Lori Gilbert-Kaye is living on through random acts of kindness, which she was known for often doing. Over the weekend, Emily Tolliver went to the Poway Dollar Tree with her 11-year-old son, Shawn. "I was just walking down the aisles, and I saw a toy snake. I was originally thinking in my head, oh, this would be great to scare my mom!" said Shawn.But Shawn quickly realized that the toy was special, noticing a note on the back. "I went over to my mom, and I told her look this says, 'Enjoy this random act of kindness.' And then we kind of read the note together and noticed it was for the person who had died in the shooting," said Shawn. Taped to the back of the toy was a bill and a dime, just enough to pay for that toy.It also had a note from a 5-year-old which read: "In loving memory of Lori Gilbert Kaye, 8/10/58 - 4/27/19"After posting the experience on Facebook, hundreds of people were moved by the gesture of kindness. On the very day they discovered the note Lori would have turned 61. "I knew that the community would be touched by it, but I was surprised it brought people to tears. Just remembering her and that a 5-year-old was remembering her on her birthday, the way she wants to be remembered, and that's through helping others and doing acts of kindness," said Emily."It really made me feel like anyone can make a difference, at any age or anywhere at any time, you can make a difference," said Shawn. Just last week Gilbert-Kaye's husband spoke at the Mesa Arts Center in Arizona, encouraging people there to do good for the world. "Here you have a wonderful, beautiful person where there was really no boundaries of religion, race or color, but she would help everyone, would look for people and help them," said Dr. Kaye. He said it was his wish to see random acts of kindness continue for his late wife. "Just little things in life, giving a little bit to charity, doing a good deed, is my way of preventing bad things from happening," said Dr. Kaye.The Tollivers say they plan to keep the happiness train going. As they decide what their act of kindness will be, they'll do so with Lori in their hearts. 2211
