Hu expressed the hope that the TNI would continuously improve its managerial level in teaching, play a better role as the training base for Tibetan cadres, and make greater contributions to improving the life of people of different ethnic groups in Tibet and promoting stability and unity in the region. A ceremony was held on Sunday at the TNI in Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province, northwest China. GUANGZHOU, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has praised Guangdong's pioneer role in the 30-year reform and opening drive and urged the south China province to continue promote cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions (SARs). Guangdong played the role as a window, laboratory and pioneer in the construction and development of socialism with Chinese characteristics, said Xi during a study tour of the south China province on July 4 and 5. Xi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, visited towns, enterprises, communities, ports and research institutions, with Guangdong Party chief Wang Yang and governor Huang Huahua. Xi hailed Guangdong's economic and social development, highlighting the fact that only socialism could save China, only the reforms and opening up to the outside world could develop China, socialism and Marxism. Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping (L Front) talks with a worker at Weiming company in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, July 5, 2008He paid special attention to the issue of Guangdong's cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao. With some Hong Kong-funded companies suffering from the decrease of overseas consumer demand and price hikes of oil and raw materials, Xi asked local officials to give assistance. Greater Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao cooperation and the development of the SARs' economies were of great significance for maintaining a long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao, and the success of the "One Country, Two Systems" policy, and eventually achieving national reunification, he said. Xi urged Guangdong to open up to cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao, by strictly following the "One Country, Two Systems" policy and the basic laws of the two SARs. Xi called for implementation of instructions by President Hu Jintao on the development of the Party. China must adopt the concept of scientific, coordinated and harmonious development, said Xi.
BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The 28-year-old policewoman Jiang Min has become a national model for her devotion to quake victims while her own mother and two-year-old daughter died in the devastating May 12 earthquake. Jiang was received by Zhou Yongkang, secretary of the Central Committee for Political and Legislative Affairs of the Communist Party of China (CPC), at Zhongnanhai, the leadership compound in downtown Beijing, on Saturday afternoon. Zhou Yongkang, secretary of the Central Committee for Political and Legislative Affairs of the Communist Party of China (CPC), shakes hands with the 28-year-old policewoman Jiang Min at Zhongnanhai, the leadership compound in downtown Beijing, May 31, 2008. Jiang Min has become a national model for her devotion to quake victims while her own mother and two-year-old daughter died in the devastating May 12 earthquake. (Xinhua Photo) Many police officers risked their own lives to save others and help suffering victims after the major quake, said Zhou, also a member of the Standing Committee of CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, "You are one of them. You have been on the frontline to assist quake victims when bearing great pains of losing the beloved. All of us should learn from you." A day after the quake, Jiang learnt that ten members of her family living in Beichuan county, one of the worst-hit areas, passed away including her only daughter. She was working as a police officer in the neighboring city Pengzhou. "I felt that the sky was falling. I can't believe that. I had just talked with my baby girl on phone a day ago," she once recalled the dark moment in an interview. But Jiang did not leave her post as more and more displaced people came to Pengzhou from quake-hit areas and the police had to help them settle down. In the week following the earthquake, she had worked at temporary shelter camps and barely slept until she fainted on the spot and was sent to hospital. Jiang has showed the best of Chinese police officers, Zhou said. He hoped that local police officers and those from other parts of China to assist quake relief would stick to such a noble spirit to work together and well serve their duty in a bid to help create a stable society in the quake-affected areas. Jiang said she would not fail the Party and people's expectation and work harder in her own post.
BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- The All-China Journalists Association (ACJA) on Saturday asked U.S.-based. news network CNN and its commentator Jack Cafferty to apologize for his remarks regarding China. In an interview with Chinese media including Xinhua News Agency, a senior official with the ACJA strongly condemned Cafferty for his "insulting" words in a TV show on April 9 and asked him and CNN to make a formal apology to all Chinese as soon as possible. Cafferty said in the TV show that Chinese products were "junk" and China was "basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years" when the Olympic torch relay was going on in San Francisco. Since the Lhasa violence on March 14, some foreign media including CNN had made a number of biased reports about the incident, the official said. CNN had violated the principle of objective reporting, and "this is not what responsible media should do," he said. "And Cafferty also disregarded a journalist's professional ethics to attack a country with insulting words," the official said. Despite having an effective mechanism to deal with false reporting, CNN issued a statement on its website six days after Cafferty's remarks, which not only pleaded for him, but also spearheaded its attack on the Chinese government, he said. CNN issued a statement on Tuesday saying, "It was not Mr. Cafferty's nor CNN's intent to cause offence to the Chinese people, and CNN would apologize to anyone who has interpreted the comments in this way." But, the statement said that Cafferty was offering his "strongly held" opinion of the Chinese government, not China's people. "We hope CNN and Cafferty to realize that they have harmed the feelings of Chinese and apologize with a rational and responsible attitude," the official said. With the Olympic Games drawing near, the ACJA welcomed all foreign media to cover the event in an objective and balanced way, he said.
