UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of January.     China will perform its duty as the rotating Council president in an objective and fair way and work with other Council members to maintain international peace and security, said Zhang Yesui, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, in a recent interview.     China will do its utmost to make sure that the Security Council works in a smooth and efficient way, Zhang added.     The Security Council presidency rotates among the Council members in the English alphabetical order of their names. Each president holds office for one calendar month. China previously assumed the presidency in October 2008.     As a permanent member of the Security Council and the largest developing country in the world, China fully participates in the work of the United Nations and plays a constructive role, Zhang said.     Under the UN Charter, the Security Council has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security in the world at large.     The Council has 15 members: five permanent members -- China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States -- and 10 non-permanent members elected by the UN General Assembly for two-year terms.     Also on Friday, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria began their two-year terms on the 15-nation Council.     The five new Security Council members were chosen after running uncontested races for the non-permanent seats, and they were duly elected by the 192-member General Assembly during a secret ballot at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in October 2009.     The five countries joined Austria, Japan, Mexico, Turkey and Uganda, whose terms on the Council end on Dec. 31, 2010.

It is a common responsibility of all countries concerned, including China and Uzbekistan, to combat the "three forces" that engage in terrorism, separatism and extremism, and to safeguard the security and stability of the area, he said.     China is willing to consolidate contacts and cooperation with Uzbek law enforcement authorities and security departments to safeguard the national and regional stability, he said.     With the efforts of its member states, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has been striving to offset the negative impacts brought by changes in international and regional affairs. The entity has exerted an important role in promoting the stability of the Central Asian region and safeguarding the common interests of the member states, Hu said.     As the rotating chair state of the SCO, Uzbekistan has actively coordinated the body's development and made a series of significant proposals, Hu said, and such efforts were highly valued and readily bolstered by the Chinese side. China is also obliged and ready to assist Uzbekistan in the hosting of the SCO summit next year, Hu said.     Karimov, on his part, said the development of bilateral relations is not only conducive to the two countries, but is also of great significance to maintaining peace and stability in the Central Asian region.     He said China is a most reliable and trust-worthy friend of Uzbekistan. Since the heads of state of the two countries met in Yekaterinburg in Russia earlier this year, bilateral practical cooperation have made substantial progress and entered a new era of development, and bilateral trade has grown rapidly, with a broad prospect of cooperation in the areas of natural gas, mining and cotton.     Karimov said, in response to the worsening of the international financial crisis, the Chinese government has adopted a series of effective measures to resolve the difficulties faced by China's economy and played an important role in promoting the growth of the world economy.     He said, against the backdrop of profound and complicated changes in today's world, Uzbekistan is ready to strengthen cooperation with China in various fields. He emphasized that Uzbekistan will adhere to the one-China policy and firmly support China's strike against the "three evil forces", "Taiwan independence" and "Tibet independence".     Karimov appreciated the major and active role that China has played in handling major international issues. SHANGHAI, Nov. 1 (Xinhua)-- HSBC has raised its forecast of China's GDP growth this year to 8.1 percent, said HSBC Group Chairman Stephen Green here Sunday.     The bank's previous forecast was 7.8 percent.     While attending the annual International Business Leaders' Advisory Council (IBLAC), Green said the world financial crisis has not derailed either of the two most noteworthy and transformative trends in global finance: "the rise of China and the shift from west to east."     He also expected effects of China's stimulus packages would further lift the country's GDP growth and sustain the recovery momentum into 2010.     Green said Shanghai, as China's largest city, had kept a relatively stable growth during the crisis, which suggested it had the potential to become one of the world's financial centers comparable to New York or London.
