WINDHOEK, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Saturday met with Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba on advancing the bilateral cooperation to further develop the partnership with Namibia.Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, China's top legislative body, extended Chinese President Hu Jintao's greetings to Pohamba and hailed an "all- weather" partnership forged between the two nations.Namibia is one of the youngest states in Africa, which became fully independent in 1990.Wu reviewed the profound friendship between the two countries, which established diplomatic ties one day after Namibia's announcement of its full independence.Wu said the two countries have reaped good harvests in cooperation in the fields of politics, trade, culture, education, public health and culture in recent years, which has already set a model for countries engaged in the South-South cooperation.He also highlighted the mutual understanding and support on issues concerning each other's core interests, and to bring the bilateral economic and trade cooperation to a new high, Wu put forward a three-point proposal concerning the importation of the husbandry and aquatic products, resource and mining as well as the infrastructure construction.Namibia is a nation with significant influence in the southern Africa, Wu said, vowing that China will work with the Namibian side to push the bilateral partnership to a higher level.For his part, Pohamba welcomed Wu's visit, the first one ever paid by a Chinese top legislator, and spoke highly of China's long-standing support for Namibia's national liberation and construction.Namibia will develop the long-term and strategic cooperation in a much broader domain with China and welcomes more Chinese businesses to invest in the country, the Namibian president said.On the China-Afrcia relationship, the two leaders stressed that the two sides should work closer under the framework of the Forum of China-Africa Cooperation to boost political mutual trust, substantial and pragmatic cooperation on trade and humanitarian exchanges, especially those among the young generations, so as to further enrich a new China-Africa partnership.Namibia is the first leg of Wu's 12-day African-Asian tour. BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- The uranium subsidiary of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGNPG) has said it is developing two large mines in the mainland.The two mines will be located in south China's Guangdong province and northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to Saturday's China Daily.The move is likely to add as much as 1,000 tonnes to the country's annual production capacity of the nuclear fuel."The two mines are expected to start operation in 2013, each with an annual production capacity of no more than 500 tonnes," the newspaper quoted Zhou Zhenxing, chairman of CGNPG Uranium Resources Co (CGNPG-URC) as saying.

BEIJING, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's police forces have formed a nationwide computerized network to share information about fugitives, fingerprints, stolen vehicles and other crimes.Sources with the Ministry of Public Security said Wednesday that almost all police officers throughout the country have access to the network, including those in border checkpoints and exit-entry administrations.The network can verify the identification cards of Chinese citizens and help the police with anti-terrorism and anti-drug operations, a statement released by the ministry said.The Public Security Ministry is working with other government agencies such as the ministries of national security and foreign affairs, the central bank and civil aviation administration to share information from the network.

HAIKOU, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's aviation authorities on Friday started to allow helicopters to fly in low-altitude airspace over the tourist island of Hainan on a trial basis for the first time. The aim is to eventually open a part of the country's tightly-controlled airspace to private aircraft.Four helicopters were manned by eight pilots from Shanghai-based Zhengyang Investment Group, a leading domestic firm in the general aviation industry. They are expected to conduct test flights in the sky, 1,000 meters above the ground in Hainan in the next two months.The flight test will collect data for low-altitude flying and test the ground control system's response to emergencies, said Zou Jianming, chairman of Zhengyang Investment Group.Hainan is the first place in China to conduct test flights of private aircraft in low-altitude airspace, said Jiang Sixian, deputy governor of the province. Domestic and foreign firms are both welcome to invest in Hainan's general aviation sector to develop world-class tourism here.China's low-altitude airspace is controlled by the Air Force and the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). Every private aircraft flight needs approval, and the procedure can take from one day up to a week.But last November, the State Council and the Central Military Commission said that part of the low-altitude airspace would be opened to promote the country's general aviation sector, including the purchase and use of private planes.General aviation refers to the part of the aviation industry that excludes flights for military, law enforcement and public transport. China has only 900 aircraft, 80 airports and fewer than 10,000 pilots in the general aviation segment.The market for general aviation in China is valued at only 13 billion yuan (1.98 billion U.S. dollars) but is expected to grow by 15 percent annually until 2020, Hainan aviation officials said.

WASHINGTON, March 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. space shuttle Discovery landed safely at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday, ending its nearly 27-year flying career as the world's most- traveled spaceship.According to NASA, Discovery touched down at 11:57 a.m. EST ( 1657 GMT) after a 13-day resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS)."For the final time: wheels stop," Discovery's commander Steven Lindsey called out as the shuttle rolled to a full stop.Discovery lifted off on Feb. 24 from the Kennedy Center and arrived at the space station on Feb. 26.During the mission, the astronauts installed a spare closet module on the space station, completed some important repairs and delivered the first humanoid robot, though it will need more time to be assembled and made operational.The 330-pound R2 consists of a head and a torso with two arms and two hands. Once it is unpacked -- likely several months after its arrival at the station -- it will initially be operated inside the Destiny laboratory for operational testing, but over time both its territory and its applications could expand.Aboard the station, its primary job for now is teaching engineers how dexterous robots behave in space. However, the hope is that through upgrades and advancements, it could one day venture outside the station to help spacewalkers make repairs or additions to the station or perform scientific work.
