NEW YORK, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States will continue to pursue the common interest without being affected by the recent changes of the U.S. political landscape, said a U.S. scholar on Friday."There is a lot of consistency in China-U.S. relations. If you look back over time, whether it is Democrats or Republicans in the Congress or in the White House, China has always been an important country for the United States. Both countries will continue to pursue the common interest," said Elizabeth Wishnick, Research Associate at Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University. She told Xinhua in an interview that it would be difficult to see major changes occurring between U.S.-China ties after the U.S. midterm elections, because both countries share so many common interests in terms of preventing the nuclear proliferation weapons and reducing the problems of terrorism, etc."Keep in mind the long-term interests we share and the long history of cooperation we have, China and U.S. will find ways to move forward and have good possibility for future cooperation," she stressed.Wishnick admitted that it is a difficult time right now for U.S. and China, because "the economy is pulling both nations in different directions and no solution has been worked out yet to resolve the pressing economic problems that divide us.""It's a challenge for us to keep focus on what can be accomplished bilaterally, instead of getting too distracted by pressing current problems. If we could have better understanding of each other's domestic concern, it will help have less confrontational dialogue," she added. She regarded Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. President Obama's meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, as well as President Hu's coming visit in January, as good opportunities for two leaders to further deepen mutual understandings."It is a process of building trust. As long as they are able to discuss their differences, they have better chance to be able to address them more effectively," she said.

KUNMING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Ten people were detained following a dispute between coal mine contractors which led to a deliberate explosion, killing nine people and injuring 48 others in southwestern Yunnan Province, local police said Sunday. The explosion occurred at around 9 a.m. Thursday at a temporary shed built by the Xiaosongdi coal mine in Luxi county of Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, according to local officials. Most of the casualties, however, were said to be with Yuejin coal mine, which is at dispute with Xiaosongdi coal mine.Local police concluded based on preliminary investigations the explosion was created by people.According to local authorities, the contractors for Xiaosongdi mine and Yuejin coal mine, which are close to each other, reportedly had a dispute after the underground shaft of one mine broke through into the other.Further, a spokesman with the provincial land and resources bureau said Sunday that the bureau had been investigating the dispute between the two mines and had been helping with the negotiations prior to the explosion.Pan Mingzhou, manager of the Yuejin coal mine, said, "the two mines had no dispute at all before October, and the negotiations were going well under the supervision of the provincial land and resources bureau.""I have no idea of why the explosion happened," Pan noted. The detainees included Wang Jianfu, contractor of the Xiaosongdi coal mine, and Zheng Chunyun, owner of the Yuejin coal mine, said the local police. Both of the mines have an annual production capacity of 90,000 tonnes.
TAIPEI, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Procedures of cross-Strait talks had become more "simplified" and the results "more tangible" after five talks over the last two-and-half years, said chairman of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) Friday in Taipei.Chiang Pin-kung told a press conference that the Chinese mainland and Taiwan were expected to sign a medical and health cooperation agreement at the upcoming talks between the SEF and the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), scheduled Tuesday.Regarding a cross-Strait investment protection agreement, he said the two sides had "reached a preliminary consensus" on it, but still needed time to further exchange views since it was "complicated" and "concerned a wide range of issues."The investment protection agreement is an important part of the follow-up negotiations after the cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) took effect in September.Chiang said the SEF and the ARATS would "continue to discuss" it in order to reach a deal as soon as possible, as "it is related to people's interests."The talks will be the sixth round since the two organizations, authorized by the mainland and Taiwan to handle cross-Strait affairs, resumed negotiations in June 2008 after an 11-year suspension.About 560 reporters, including more than 400 from Taiwan, 60 from the mainland, as well as those from Hong Kong, Macao and foreign countries, will cover the event.Chiang said a mainland delegation, led by the ARATS executive vice president Zheng Lizhong, was scheduled to arrive in Taipei on Sunday and would hold a preparatory negotiation with SEF vice chairman and secretary general Kao Koong-lian, to decide the agenda of the talks.ARATS president Chen Yunlin and his wife are expected to arrive in Taipei Monday morning. The two sides are scheduled to hold talks on Tuesday morning and sign the medical and health cooperation agreement in the afternoon.Chen and his wife will also visit Taipei's National Palace Museum and the Taipei International Flora Expo, before leaving Wednesday noon.Chiang said next year would mark the 20th anniversary of the SEF's establishment. "The development of cross-Strait relations is hard-won, and the cross-Strait talks are a reflection of people first, care for people's livelihoods and mutual benefits."
