SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As San Diegans come to grips with the violence that unfolded in a Paradise Hills home, leaving a mother and her young boys dead, District Attorney Summer Stephan tells 10News it is a problem that San Diego is becoming too familiar with.“Domestic violence remains the number one killer of women in the United States and right here in San Diego,” said Stephan.She revealed the County of San Diego had 18 murders last year related to domestic violence.RELATED: Resources available to domestic violence victimsStephan said a third of those murders involved people who had active restraining orders.“We want victims to know that a restraining order is a piece of paper and that it alone is not going to protect the victim,” she said.According to Stephan, the first 72 hours after filing a restraining order are the most vulnerable for retaliation and victims need to have a plan in place.RELATED: Document details chilling text messages sent to woman killed in Paradise Hills murder-suicide“In the first 72 hours after somebody obtains a restraining order the risk is heightened,” she said. “There is almost an escalation of risk.”One important piece of advice for victims after filing a restraining order, is to leave the home the offender knows of.“What we say is for a victim to get a restraining order, but only after there has been a safety plan and there has been a threat assessment by professionals.”Across the county, there are a number of resources available to help put a plan together.“There's a family justice center run by the City Attorney Mara Elliott, there's a center for community solutions with a 24 hour number,” she said.More resources are also listed on the DA’s website https://www.sdcda.org/helping/domestic-violence.html 1769

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Customs and Border Protection officers say more than 300 pounds of drugs were seized from a truck at the Otay Mesa cargo port of entry this week.CBP officers say a tractor-trailer truck was stopped on Thursday at about 7 a.m. The driver was carrying a shipment of recycled cardboard, CBP said.The truck was referred to an imaging scan and exam, where an anomaly was detected in the truck's cab.CBP says officers removed 64 packages from two duffel bags hidden inside a sleeper compartment: 59 containing 286 pounds of methamphetamine and five bags containing 26 pounds of fentanyl.The narcotics, and tractor-trailer were seized and the driver, a 36-year-old Mexican citizen with a valid B1/B2 border-crossing card, was turned over to ICE and booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center to face federal charges."Even in the midst of a global pandemic, we continue to see attempts to move hard narcotics across the border and into U.S. communities," said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Before taking children trick-or-treating this Halloween, families are encouraged to visit The Megan's Law Website where hundreds of registered sex offenders are listed across San Diego. The search tool allows families to look up registered sex offenders in their neighborhood or other parts around the state and see them on a map."Megan’s Law also authorizes local law enforcement agencies to notify the public about sex offender registrants found to be posing a risk to public safety," the site says.The map lists markers surrounding the address used in the search.  Users can input any address and radius for a broader search. Information includes images of the sex offender, known aliases, addresses, description of the person, offenses, and a risk assessment.According to website, some of the registrants are currently in violation of their registration requirements and asks the public to contact police with information they may have about these individuals.The website was created and named after 7-year-old Megan Kanka, of New Jersey, who was brutally raped and killed in 1994 by her neighbor, Jesse Timmendequas.  Timmendequas had been convicted for sexually assaulting young girls.  After serving less than a year in a correctional facility, he  moved into a home across the street from the family without their knowledge. "In the wake of that tragedy, the Kankas sought to have local communities warned about sex offenders in the area. All states in the U.S. now have some form of Megan's Law," the website says.The website indicates that some of the registrants are currently in violation of their registration requirements. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Balboa Park is getting some new trees and, in turn, lending itself to a new brew.Friends of Balboa Park planted about 27 new trees in Balboa Park Friday in celebration of Arbor Day. The trees were placed in the grove on Park Blvd. and Morley Field Dr., across from the San Diego Zoo.The trees planted including six different varieties and are all perfect for San Diego's semi-arid climate."Friends is honored to have such strong support from our donors and corporate partners that enables us to continue making meaningful enhancements to the Park," John Bolthouse, Friends of Balboa Park executive director, said.
