Gavin Newsom's measures aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus unfairly target the industry and are demanding they be allowed to reopen.Scott Street, a lawyer for the California Fitness Alliance, said Tuesday that the suit was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Rowling says she is returning an award from a human rights group linked to the Kennedy family after the president of the organization criticized her comments about transgender issues. Rowling's decision comes after Kerry Kennedy, the president of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights and the late senator's daughter, published a statement expressing her "profound disappointment" with the author's comments. "Trans rights are human rights. J.K. Rowling’s attacks upon the transgender community are inconsistent with the fundamental beliefs and values of RFK Human Rights and represent a repudiation of my father’s vision," Kennedy wrote. "Women’s rights are not degraded by the recognition of trans rights. LIVONIA, Mich. — A racially offensive history lesson involving slavery has a Detroit mother outraged and calling out her daughter’s school. The parent Livonia, Michigan says she’s speaking out so no other child has to go through a similar situation. Now, the school is issuing a statement of its own.The lesson came during a seventh-grade social studies lesson at Frost Middle School in Livonia that left student Jade Holt disgusted. “It was weird and uncomfortable,” Jade said. She said her course on the history of slavery included a question that read: “A slave stands before you. This slave has disrespected his master by telling him you are not my master. How will you punish this slave?”“I read the question and typed my answer. It was, 'there will be no punishment because I do not believe in slavery,'” Jade said. “I never want my daughter to feel that way again, the way she felt this morning,” Jade's mother Jaala Holt said.She believes the teacher also isn’t the only one to blame. “Everything has to be approved before it’s given to the children. So, for whomever approved this inappropriate question for seventh graders, I find it asinine for me,” Jaala said.A school spokesperson released the statement below, which read, in part:“Concerns from a parent were brought to our attention this morning, and we have reviewed a social studies assignment given to three classes of our seventh-grade students. We recognize the assignment in question was not constructed appropriately, as we believe in the importance of approaching topics of slavery in any era of world history with the utmost care and consideration.”The principal hasn’t said if anyone has been disciplined. Lori Becerra has a lot of work to do, picking up the pieces of Category 4 Hurricane Michael.Becerra helps run Southern Assisted Care, a place seniors with Alzheimer’s call home.“With their cognition, they don’t always recognize what’s going on,” explains Becerra. “So, we tried to kind of keep it from them.Since Alzheimer’s patients don’t always process information the same way, Becerra says she didn’t want to create unnecessary stress.But how do you keep a Category 4 storm howling on the other side of a boarded-up window a secret?Becerra says they kept their residents entertained.  “In the middle of everything, being scary and you know you’re hearing trees come down and hearing wind howl, you’re turning on music on the radio and doing a dance party,” she says. “You’re putting out puzzles to do a puzzle.”Becerra says it was just about keeping her residents distracted.“And they haven’t been back outside since the storm so they don’t even realize what’s happened,” she says.The facility is now without running water, and Becerra expects to be running on generators for days, if not longer. She says she’ll take the burden of the stress, so the residents, as she puts it, can stay blissfully unaware.“It’s protected them from having to go through what we’re feeling emotionally when we see it,” Becerra says. 1331
