SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- From elementary school students to parents, many in the Scripps Ranch community are coming together to help during the coronavirus crisis.Like many throughout the county, Ryan Williams is now working from home. His wife does not have that luxury. “My wife has been a nurse for about 12 years now,” Williams said. He is helping to make face masks to send to health care workers. “It is personal,” Williams said. “I would want to make sure my wife is protected when she was trying to help save others’ lives. I believe most people in the world would feel the same way as our health care workers.Williams, who works for Craft Bot, makes the headbands for the masks. Others help put it together. Others have one because they're a consumer that owns a 3D printer and they can print three or four a day. There's several people out there chipping in little by little,” Williams said.Ten-year-old Asher Botts is one of those people helping. He is also using his 3D printer to make headbands. He’s made five so far, with each one taking several hours to print. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- During this pandemic, technology such as Zoom, has become very important in helping family and friends stay in contact. But what about senior citizens who may not be tech-savvy? Well, Vi, a senior living residence in La Jolla, is using a pilot program from Candoo Tech, which is aimed at getting older adults, like 98-year-old resident Randy Tidmore, over the fear of going online. "I didn't know anything about technology," says Tidmore. "I was having all kinds of trouble, and it wasn't easy."But thanks to Candoo Tech, seniors like Randy can take free online training sessions, in everything from learning how to use an iPad, online safety, Zoom, and much more."Actually, it keeps me really busy because I Zoom with Clipped Wings, which is an organization of United Airlines people, and Women Marines Association. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the first time in 40 days, San Diego County has fallen below the state's County Monitoring List threshold for coronavirus case rate.San Diego County was placed on the list on July 3 after it crossed the state metric of 100 cases per 100,000 people over 14 days. Wednesday, the county reported a case rate of 94.1.The county will have to remain off the watch list for another three days to get off California's watch list and an additional 14 days in order for local schools grades 7th through 12th can return to in-person instruction.No other businesses are slated to be allowed to reopen after that 17-day window unless the state provides more guidance for business reopenings, according to the county.San Diego County reported 236 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, a 3% positive rate out of 7,339 reported tests. Six new deaths were also reported, including five women and one man who died between July 28 and Aug. 11. All of the victims had underlying conditions, county officials said.The county also reported two new community outbreaks, one in a grocery setting and one in a manufacturing setting.While the county's case rate has fallen, it continues to be high above its community outbreak threshold of seven in seven days. Currently, the county has 26 community outbreaks in a week. A community outbreak is three or more coronavirus cases in the same setting in people of different households in the past two weeks.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said of the drop in the county's case rate: "San Diegans should be proud of the progress we have made, but we have to recognize the goal is not just to get our cases down, it is to keep them down. We’ve seen progress because of a renewed focus and vigilance, and we need that same focus going forward." 1782

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Get ready for March Madness as San Diego State University is going dancing in Wichita.SDSU's men's basketball team was selected as a number 11 seed on Sunday for the NCAA tournament.The Aztecs will face Houston, a number six seed, on Thursday in Wichita, in the first round of the tournament. This is SDSU's seventh NCAA tournament appearance in the last nine years. They have been to the Big Dance a total of 12 times, and this is their first time under head coach Brian Dutcher. The Aztecs are on a nine-game win streak, with their 82-75 victory over New Mexico on Saturday capturing the Mountain West championship and guaranteeing them a spot in the NCAA tournament.   728

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dreams of a degree take a backseat when you’re trying to find a safe place to sleep every night. As part of 10News’ Facing It Together initiative, we’re sharing a glimpse into life for homeless students and what’s being done to help them. “I’ve got to finish, that’s why I keep coming, I’ve got to finish,” said Brandon, a San Diego native who only wanted to be identified by his first name. Brandon started taking classes at City College three years ago in hopes of becoming a psychologist. “I love City, I love City, I feel so safe here and welcome here, I always have.” Six years sober, Brandon overcame a meth and heroin addiction. But he's been in and out of homelessness for several years. Complete Coverage: Facing It Together“Education will help me get out of this homeless situation, education will help my family, my kids included, get out of poverty.” Brandon spends more hours getting to and from school than inside the actual classroom. Living in Escondido, it's a two-hour bus commute each way. He and his dog are currently living in a shed with a bed made out of recycled materials. “I would love to have my own pad, that I can actually take a shower and wash dishes in a sink. Hot water, it’s been a while.” After surviving a suicide attempt in 2003, Brandon wants to help others struggling. And there are many. A 2018 study found 9 percent of university students were homeless in the last year. The figure was 12 percent for community college students. Stephanie Hernandez and her husband, both Palomar College students, became homeless after their landlord raised the rent. They spent a year and a half living in their car. “The biggest struggle was going to sleep at night and not knowing if you’d get woken up by the cops,” Hernandez said. “Having no job, having nothing, this being your home with no gas, and being stuck somewhere…it’s heart-shattering.” Hernandez was ready to quit until she confided in school employees, who told her about the campus food pantry. Palomar College helped Hernandez get a job and an emergency grant for a car expense. “I think we really addressed the food and nutrition part first; the homelessness thing is going to probably take a little longer.” Aiden Ely with Palomar College said the school has created a task force to look into safe overnight parking lots for students.
