Lisa Kendall and Doug Spainhower have spent years, along with their neighbors, working to make their neighborhood more safe from wildfires.“The less burnable material that you have, then the more likely your house is to survive a wildfire," said Kendall.They’ve been clearing the area around their entire neighborhood in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, which has one road in and out and is surrounded by forests, with dead trees, downed trees and debris.“You have this home, you paid money for it, it only costs a little bit more to do this defensible space work to give these firefighters a chance to be able to defend your home,” she said.“I’ve been right in the middle of forest fires, so it scares the hell out of me,” Doug Spainhower said. He grew up in Northern California, another hot spot for wildfires.“It’s important that everybody is on board because if only half of the residents buy into it, then the other half doesn't, well if their house catches on fire and you’re next door, your house is going to burn down too. There’s no two ways about it,” Spainhower said.“Recognize it can happen to you,” Kendall said. “Even all this preparation and all this work we’ve done over the years, it’s not a guarantee.”2020 has been one of the worst wildfire seasons on record in the western U.S., from winery-scorching blazes in Northern California to 100,000 acres burned in 24 hours by the East Troublesome Fire in Colorado, to fires biting at backyards in Southern California. All leveling homes and putting entire neighborhoods at risk.“As the west has developed and we have seen communities grow that are on the edge of the forest or surrounded by natural wooded areas, we have complicated the problem of wildfire and the threat wildfire poses to people's homes, our communities,” said Steve Lipsher, Community Resource Officer for Summit Fire & EMS. “Mitigation is our way to try to claw back a little bit and protect those areas.”Mitigation efforts include reminding land owners of defensible space, to clear cuts of trees down in conjunction with the forest service.“We’re all working towards this idea of a fire resistant, fire adapted community. One that can withstand a fire. We’re not there yet,” Lipsher said. “But I think we have made some truly innovative strides.”An example lies just north of Downtown Frisco, where Summit Fire & EMS is located. Lipsher said they completed a controversial clear cut around a neighborhood as a precaution, but that cut played a part in saving those homes from the Buffalo Mountain Fire in 2018.“It was a human-caused fire,” Lipsher said. The fire burned up to just a football throw from nearby homes. “When this fire started here, [the clear cut] was the saving grace for this neighborhood,” he said.Scorched trees are still standing today.“We’re seeing some unprecedented fire behavior and some really extreme fire behavior that, as a forester and a firefighter, we just haven't really seen in our lifetime managing these forests,” said Ashley Garrison, a Forester with the Colorado State Forest Service. “The effect these wildfires can have on the environment can really have these cascading event when they are these intense, large fires.”Garrison and Lipsher are just two of the men and women who spend their days working on wildfire mitigation, something Summit County has been focused on for more than a decade.“It’s been 15 years now since Summit County developed one of the first community wildfire protection plans,” Lipsher explained. “It was one of the first developed in the state and in the country.”As for making a community fireproof, that may be unachievable. “Quite frankly I think that will probably be a never ending quest,” he said. “Our existential threat here is wildfire. It's no different if you lived in Kansas with the threat of tornadoes, or if you lived in Miami and it’s the threat of hurricanes.” 3981

LEMON GROVE (KGTV) -- People are being asked to avoid a busy intersection in Lemon Grove following a natural gas line break Monday afternoon.The affected area is along the 6900 block of Federal Avenue, officials said.Fire officials issued the warning at around 2:45 p.m. They are warning people to avoid the area for about two hours while crew work to repair the break.It's unclear what caused the break.Stay with 10News for updates on this developing story.   488

LA MESA (KGTV)— Meteorologists are predicting a wet Christmas week in San Diego. 10News revisited residents at the San Diego RV Resort in La Mesa that dealt with a Thanksgiving flood to see if they are prepared for the next set of thunderstorms. Taylor Jaime showed 10News around the RV resort. "She [My mother] was cooking a turkey at my sister's house for Thanksgiving," Jaime remembered. She said she never got to enjoy that turkey after her home got washed away. Jaime and her family live at the San Diego RV Resort full-time. On Thanksgiving day, heavy rains inundated the ravine that runs parallel to the resort. "So the water started coming over this [the wall]," Jaime motioned. The retaining wall collapsed and the water came up waist-high, destroying two of her cars, their 40-foot trailer and everything inside. Unfortunately, their the new RV was insured at the time of the storm. "The water was so nasty. There was crab, there was fish in the trailer," Jaime remembered. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the RV resort is right in the middle of a heavy flood zone. The resort staff told 10News they just finished rebuilding the wall Saturday. In the last month, Jaime said she saw Caltrans and California Conservation Corps workers clean up some of the debris, but she fears another collapse. "The water won't be able to go through. It'll get stuck down there, like last time," pointing at the west end of the resort lot.With heavy rains forecasted during Christmas week, some of Jaime's neighbors have already lined sandbags along their lots. Lucky for Jaime and her family, they have a spare trailer, albeit an older and smaller one. They parked it away from the ravine and closer to the entrance gate. Six people and several small animals are now crammed inside the trailer. They didn't skimp on holiday decorations, though."We are still in the spirit," Jaime said. "It's not going to bring us down. We are still a family. We still have each other. And that's what matters the most."10News reached out to San Diego RV Resort's parent company for comment to see if they are making other preparations ahead of the storm. (KGTV) — It took a true team effort to help disentangle a humpback whale spotted off La Jolla's coast this week.SeaWorld says the 35-foot whale was reported late Thursday by local birdwatcher Gary Nunn as its swam near shore. Rescue team members traveled about one mile out from Scripps Pier on Friday to find the animal tangled in about 900 feet of rope and weighed down by six fishing traps called pots.SeaWorld rescuers spent four hours cutting the whale free. A local fishing vessel — called McGhee Marie — helped haul the gear away. Leaders of the world’s most powerful nations wrapped up the Group of 20 summit on Sunday, vowing to spare no effort to protect lives and ensure affordable access to COVID-19 vaccines for all people.The two-day summit of heads of state was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed at least 1.38 million people globally, with the world’s highest death tolls recorded in seven of the G-20 countries. The virus has wiped out hundreds of millions of jobs globally and plunged millions into extreme poverty.The virus “revealed vulnerabilities in our preparedness and response and underscored our common challenges,” the G-20 said in a final statement that focused heavily on battling the coronavirus, enhancing environmental protections and supporting the global economy.The group vowed “to spare no effort to protect lives.”The G-20, which includes the U.S., India, China, the U.K., France, Germany, Japan and others, also stressed the importance of global access to COVID-19 vaccines, drugs and tests.“We will spare no effort to ensure their affordable and equitable access for all people, consistent with members’ commitments to incentivize innovation,” the statement said.The G-20 expressed support for efforts like COVAX, an international initiative to distribute COVID-19 vaccines to countries worldwide.
