Negotiations have slowly progressed in recent days as members of Congress and the White House try to iron out details in the next round of economic stimulus amid the coronavirus. One of the key issues where the sides have not found much agreement is on expanding food stamp benefits, which is a priority for Democrats. When the Senate GOP released their latest stimulus proposal last week, it did not include expanded food assistance. While generally Republicans have not been in favor of expanding food stamp benefits, one prominent Republican said on Tuesday he is supportive of increasing food assistance.Pat Roberts, R-Kan., told the Associated Press that he has raised the issue with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. The Kansas Republican is the chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee.“They are taking a look at it and I think we can get a positive result,” Roberts told The Associated Press. “If we can get a breakthrough on that, it could lead to some other stuff.”In May, Democrats approved a .5 billion stimulus plan of their own, which both the White House and Senate Republicans said they would not consider for a myriad of reasons. The House Democrats’ bill would have increased SNAP benefits by 15% through September 30, 2021, and would have provided an extra billion in food assistance through the pandemic.Feeding America, which is a consortium of the nation’s food banks, criticized the Senate Republicans’ proposal that was released last week, which did not include increased funding for food assistance. According to Feeding America projections, an estimated 17 million additional Americans are expected to become food insecure in 2020, placing further strain on the nation’s food banks and pantries.“The people we serve – many who are visiting our food banks for the first time – are waiting in hours-long lines for food,” said Kate Leone, Chief Government Relations Officer for Feeding America. “Not increasing investment in food, transportation, and storage, as well as the capacity to help our network feed millions more families during this economic downturn is a missed opportunity.”While there is a general consensus in Washington on sending out another wave of ,200 stimulus checks, other issues remain unsolved, including unemployment supplements and liability protection for companies. 2337
NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A New Port Richey, Florida man has been arrested after he allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl at his house while playing Grand Theft Auto, deputies say. The alleged rape was witnessed by another gamer who overheard the incident while playing the game with the suspect over PlayStation 4. Daniel Enrique Fabian, 18, was arrested on Wednesday, November 21 and charged with lewd and lascivious battery in connection to the incident which occurred on June 28, 2018. The 15-year-old girl was at Fabian's home at the time of the incident. Fabian is known to the victim. Fabian was playing Grand Theft Auto with another gamer when he told the other gamer he had a girl over at his house and he was going to "smash" her.Fabian stopped playing the game for 15 minutes and during that time, the other gamer says Fabian's microphone was still on and he could hear the victim moaning and saying "no." The victim told Fabian to stop four times, but he continued to have sexual intercourse with her, according to the arrest affidavit. After 15 minutes, Fabian resumed playing the video game with the other gamer. A Sexual Assault Victim Exam was done on the 15-year-old girl and the results supported the allegation of sexual abuse. Fabian was arrested and booked into the Land O' Lakes Detention Center. 1350

Nine-year-old Nariya White loves to concoct slime and make lip gloss. She's an aspiring scientist and an expert at turning simple ingredients into original products. So when she was bullied this past school year, she turned that experience into something positive.“Two girls were bullying me, and I just decided I should make a book about bullying," said White. In March, she wrote a book called "A Slimetastic Day." It was recently published and is available on Amazon. The book is about "encouragement." When two boys call girls dumb, the girls initially become discouraged, but then the girls challenge the boys to slime making competition. The girls use their creativity and knowledge to prevail. White hopes her book inspires other children.“The book was about bullying, so if someone in your school or on the street is bullying you, you shouldn’t really care about it because you have your family, cousins, and friends that care about you," White said.White's mother Kina knew the book would be a bestseller with family and friends but said she didn't expect all the praise they've received from strangers. She hoped publishing the book would help spread the word.“I thought it was important just to make other people aware that you can turn a negative into a positive, and I know that there are many kids that are dealing with the same situation and many parents," said Kina White. The young author leaves her readers with this message, on the book's last page."From that day on, the girls knew that anything boys could do so could girls."WKBW's Gilat Melamed first reported this story. 1598
NEW YORK — The Uncle Ben’s rice brand is changing its name to Ben's Original. Parent company Mars Inc. is the latest company to drop a logo criticized as a racial stereotype. Mars said the Ben's Original packaging will hit stores in 2021. Since the 1940s, the rice boxes have featured a white-haired Black man, sometimes with a bowtie. According to Uncle Ben's website, the name "Uncle Ben" refers to a "legendary Texan farmer, Uncle Ben who was known for his exceptionally high-quality rice." Frank Brown, a maitre d' at a Chicago restaurant, posed for "Uncle Ben's" portrait, which has since served as the brand's logo.Critics have said the image evoke servitude. Global President for Mars Food Fiona Dawson says the company is still deciding on an image to accompany the new name. Pressure on brands to retire racial imagery have intensified amid the Black Lives Matter protests over police killings of unarmed African Americans. Aunt Jemima syrup and pancake mix was the first company to announce a planned name change amid widespread civil unrest. Other brands like Cream of Wheat and Eskimo Pie have said they will retire racial logos. 1149
NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials have sparked a wave of confusion after posting guidelines that coronavirus testing is not necessary for people who have been in close contact with infected people. The new guidance was posted earlier this week on the website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency formerly advised testing for close contacts. But on Monday that was changed to say that testing is no longer recommended for symptom-less people who were within 6 feet of an infected person for more than 15 minutes. CDC officials have referred all questions to the agency’s parent organization, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in Washington. 691
