SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego and the San Diego Housing Commission announced details about a planned purchase of two hotels to convert into permanent housing for the homeless.After a six-month search, city officials announced the purchase of the Residence Inns in Mission Valley and Kearny Mesa. The price tag: 6.5 million.Scott Marshall of the San Diego Housing Commission says the project draws upon city, county and state funds to turn hotel rooms into 332 affordable apartments for the homeless, many of them currently staying at the convention center as part of the program, Operation Shelter To Home."This is not temporary shelter. They are permanent homes that will provide them a path out of the shelter and off the streets," said Marshall.Marshall says of the 29 sites considered, the two Residence Inns stood out."They were operating as hotels and in good condition. They didn't require a lot of work for people to move in," said Marshall.Federal housing vouchers will help residents with part of the rent. They'll also receive a host of wraparound services."Things like health care, Life skills training and employment assistance to help them get back on their feet and to a more stabile life," said Marshall.The hotels turned apartments reside in commercial areas, with many other motels and hotels as neighbors. SDSU marketing professor Miro Copic says any issues at the sites could turn into pubic relations problems."Tourists and travel agents could see it as a negative, and it may turn away people from the area. The city has to manage this effectively. If it does so, it may not have much of an impact on nearby hotels," said Copic.If the city council approves the purchase in October, the apartments could be ready by December. 1768

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The convention center expansion initiative will not make the November ballot even though San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer gave it his best shot.Faulconer's ballot measure proposal to fund the convention center expansion, get homeless people off the streets and fix roads needed five votes to pass.  It only got 4.The vote came after Faulconer asked council to convene a special meeting with just 24 hours' notice.  The mayor requested it after learning there weren't enough valid signatures collected to place the measure on the November ballot. 602

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mountain lion euthanized by California Department of Fish and Wildlife wardens is the same animal responsible for attacking a boy at Los Pe?asquitos Canyon Preserve, CDFW announced Friday. The 4-year-old boy was among 11 people hiking the North San Diego County trail Memorial Day when the 80-pound female mountain lion attacked him. Wardens who went to the scene found the animal’s tracks and encountered it moments later. The mountain lion appeared to have little fear of humans: an abnormal behavior, CDFW said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Community Resource Center, a non-profit dedicated to helping families in need, was able to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and deliver holiday happiness to North County families.Every year, the CRC does their annual "Holiday Baskets" program, where families in need get a shopping spree-style day at the Del Mar Fairgrounds to get food, toys, clothing, and more for the holidays.But in 2020, the pandemic made the annual shopping spree impossible because of state and county health guidelines.So the CRC changed things up a bit, turning the event into a drive-thru.Now, instead of walking through a shopping area and picking out items, families will drive through the fairgrounds and have things handed to them in their cars."We'll have a pre-made box of food for each family, we'll have pre-made boxes of blankets for each family, and a pre-made box with family gifts," says CRC CEO John Van Cleef. "So the ability to choose gifts has changed this year, but we'll be providing puzzles, board games, and other family-based gifts."Because of the changes, the CRC could only assist 1,100 families, which is down from their usual 1,600.It may have been even fewer if not for the help of a 15-year old girl."There's always a way that we can help each other out," says Lucie Babcock, who has been volunteering with the CRC since she was 9.For the past five years, Lucie has held bake sales or lemonade stands to raise money for the CRC. She then uses the money to buy toys and gifts for the families.Because of the Pandemic, she couldn't do her usual fundraising.Instead, Lucie wrote letters to family and friends asking for donations. She raised 0."Even if it seems like maybe you don't have the connections to make a difference, there's always a way," she says.Van Cleef says people like Lucie inspire him to keep helping others.The Holiday Baskets event is Saturday, Dec. 4, but families must pre-register to participate. 1952

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mother of a Southern California girl diagnosed with rat-bite fever is sharing her story at a San Diego hospital Friday to educate other parents about the danger. Rat-bite fever is a potentially deadly infection spread through contact with domestic rats. 8-year-old Cali from Menifee contracted the disease when the rat’s saliva came into contact with an open wound, according to Rady Children’s Hospital officials. Cali has eczema on her fingers which may have contributed to the situation, a doctor said.Rat-bite fever is a bacterial disease which can cause a rash, fever, and body aches.The illness started Friday night, said Cali's mother Sabrina. By Sunday, Cali had a fever of 104.6 degrees. She lost the ability to use her hands and arms and had a whole-body rash."Really, really scary. Really hard to watch," said Sabrina.Cali's family bought two rats, Shell and Onyx, from a feed store about two years ago with no warning about the potential of rat-bite fever.Doctors recommended the family get rid of their rats."We didn't want to do it," said Sabrina. “It’s not a fun thing to tell your kid you’ve got to get rid of your best friend."Cali's mother had a recommendation for other parents."Just know that this can happen," she said.
