(KGTV) — La Mesa is now accepting applications from residents to be a part of the city's Community Police Oversight Board.The city is looking for applicants for the newly-created 11-member panel that will provide recommendations to the Chief of Police, Mayor, City Council, and City Manager on La Mesa Police procedures and policies, as well as matters of public safety in the city.Applicants must be a resident of the city. Latinos are more likely to have to stay in the hospital and are also more likely to die from coronavirus, according to experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).A number of factors contribute to a higher risk, including language barriers and not receiving important information in their native language.That's why communities across the country are focusing on finding bilingual contact tracers.Community Care of North Carolina has a team of them.“We do try to find individuals that match the community, because that's what builds the trust, and people are more willing to talk to people that are like them, and their community,” said Christina Page with Community Care of North Carolina. “So, we try really hard to try to find bilingual individuals who can go out into the community.”Not only are people in the Latino community more willing to speak to a contact tracer, it's also easier to speak about their own health.“It is hard for the community to communicate through interpreters and that is a barrier for trust. It is easy for somebody, if you are talking in your language, to connect and express how you are feeling and what are the problems that you have,” said Wendy Pascual with Community Care North Carolina.Contact tracers aren't just finding people who have been exposed to coronavirus. They're often giving people information they had not received before and also connecting families with resources that help them get food and pay for utilities.There's also need for contact tracers who speak other languages, but the biggest need is for people who speak Spanish. 1609

LARGO, Fla. — A Largo teen is being hailed a hero for his quick thinking and calm demeanor, two things paramedics say were crucial in saving his dad's life.In August, then 18-year-old Zachary Musgrave reacted in seconds after his dad had a major heart attack in the basement of the family's home."I was pretty terrified. I just held myself together the best I could," Musgrave said.Musgrave quickly dialed 911 an got through to 911 telecommunicator Matthew Albright, who coached him through performing CPR for the very first time."He was cool, calm and collected and followed directions to do exactly what he needed to do," Albright said.For seven minutes, Musgrave performed CPR on his dad before paramedics arrived. It's something first responders say saved his dad's life.Niesa Jones was one of the first Sunstar Paramedics to arrive on the scene."That's absolutely what happened," she said. "His son saved his life. We helped."David Musgrave, Zachary's father, was rushed to Largo Medical Center, and just nine days after his heart attack, he was cleared to come home. Paramedics called his recovery a miracle because he came into the hospital under cardiac arrest with a 100% blockage in his left anterior descending artery — what some refer to as a "widowmaker heart attack.""I looked at his charts and it's truly a miracle that the man is walking," said Patti Squires, the Associate Chief Nursing Officer at Largo Medical Center.David Musgrave says his son has become his hero."I'm so proud of him. If it wasn't for him starting the process, I probably wouldn't be here," he said."I'm just thankful that I was there and I was able to save my dad. I'm just happy he's here with us today," Zachary Musgrave said.On Wednesday, David Musgrave and his four children met the first responders that helped keep him alive.Alana Morris, one of the first Largo Firefighter paramedics to arrive on the scene, said the ceremony was touching."To actually have a patient come back and thank us for what we did and to see him alive was just a great experience. There are no words to describe that," Morris said.Now, the Musgrave family's story is inspiring a new mission to save lives.On Nov. 3 at noon, Largo Medical Center will offer free hands-only CPR training online, which will be open to everyone. LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Virgin Hyperloop says it made history on Sunday by testing human travel in one of its hyperloop pods for the first time.The company says its two-person pod traveled 107 mph on its 500-meter DevLoop test site in Las Vegas, where more than 400 unoccupied tests have been run before.The first two people to ride in the new form of transportation were one of the company’s co-founders, Josh Giegel, and its director of passenger experience, Sara Luchian.The occupants made the maiden voyage on the newly unveiled XP-2 vehicle, which Virgin says was custom-built with safety and comfort in mind.Virgin says its vehicles glide using no-contact electromagnetic levitation through a vacuum environment that reduces air pressure down to the equivilanet of 200,000 ft. above sea level. That lowers aerodynamic drag allows for higher speeds to be achieved using minimal energy.According to the company’s website, the system can propel passenger cargo pods at speed of over 600 mph.The company says two-person pod was built to demonstrate passengers can safely travel in a hyperloop vehicle and that the final pods will be larger, seating up to 28 passengers.Sir Richard Branson, Founder of the Virgin Group, said in a press release that he hopes the hyperloop will change the way people live, work and travel in the years to come.“I can’t tell you how often I get asked ‘is hyperloop safe?,’” said Jay Walder, CEO of Virgin Hyperloop. “With today’s passenger testing, we have successfully answered this question, demonstrating that not only can Virgin Hyperloop safely put a person in a pod in a vacuum environment, but that the company has a thoughtful approach to safety which has been validated by an independent third party.”This isn’t the only stride Virgin has made with its goal of establishing hyperloop systems across the world.
