After making a go at in-person classes, a jump in COVID-19 cases on campus has prompted the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill to shift to virtual only for all undergraduate courses, the university announced Monday.UNC will start distance learning on Wednesday. The university reported 129 confirmed COVID-19 cases last week, and a jump in its positivity rate from 2.8% to 13.6%. The university said it has tested 954 students with 177 in isolation and 349 in quarantine. The university said that most of the infected students have mild symptoms. The university said graduate, professional and health affairs schools will continue to be taught as they are, or as directed by the schools.UNC will allow students to cancel residence hall housing without penalty in an effort to depopulate the campus.“There are no easy answers as the nation navigates through the pandemic,” UNC President Peter Hans said. “At this point, we haven’t received any information that would lead to similar modifications at any of our other universities. Whether at Chapel Hill or another institution, students must continue to wear facial coverings and maintain social distancing, as their personal responsibility, particularly in off-campus settings, is critical to the success of this semester and to protect public health.”The university’s football team is still slated to play this fall, along with other members of the ACC. Two of the five “Power 5” conferences, the Pac-12 and Big 10, have opted to delay their seasons to the spring. The ACC, SEC and Big 12 are still slated to play this fall. The good news for the state of North Carolina is coronavirus cases are declining. According to New York Times data, the state was averaging 2,000 new cases per day, but that number has fallen to under 1,300. Deaths are still an issue in the Tar Heel state, with an average of 25 people dying per day from coronavirus-related illnesses. 1926

Across the West Coast, entire towns are being leveled by historic wildfires, and one northern California county is facing this horror for the second time in two years.Berry Creek’s hilly terrain is still smoldering, as homeowners anxiously wait to be let back into the area, although many already know they don’t have homes to come back to.“When they see the smoke or hear about a fire, their PTSD, whether you’re civilian or former military, it kicks in,” said resident Michael Zylstra, who evacuated from his home.Steve Kaufmann, the public information officer for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, compared the fires to a freight train.A freight train of fire, swallowing everything in its path.“When we have a fire like this, it makes for number one, explosive, but we are seeing erratic fire behavior we’ve never seen in our career,” Kaufmann said.Fires so erratic it’s capable of leaving a town unrecognizable.Michael Zylstra says his aunt and uncle won’t have a home to come back to. Miles of Berry Creek homes have been reduced to rubble.“It’s a scenario where the vegetation is completely bone dry,” he described. The town is a casualty of the North Complex Fire. Fueled by years of drought and extreme winds, it’s burned over 260,000 acres in northern California.“It took a huge toll on the community,” Kaufmann recalled. “It hit because it moved so fast, and we just didn’t have the resources to put in there to defend every structure involved.”With resources spread across 28 major fires, Kaufmann says it’s a challenge the state has had to adapt to.“We’re always prepared for the worst-case scenario,” he said. “This is probably definitely one of the worst cases we’ve seen in years.”Zylstra evacuated his home six days ago in the nearby town of Cherokee. As he waits for news, he helps fellow veterans cope with the trauma.“It’s been stressful,” he said. “They’re anxious, they get nervous, they don’t know what to do, they can’t sleep.”In large part because the community went through this nearly two years ago when the Camp Fire ripped through paradise killing 85 people and destroying nearly 19,000 structures.“It’s very painful memories for a lot of them,” Zylstra said. It’s painful for many to rebuild.“[In] a lot of people’s eyes, it will never be what it was; it will never ever be what it was in 20-30 years, what it used to be,” he said. And now, another town must also try and navigate life forever changed by fire.“We just need to all work together for that one common goal, to take care of each other,” Zylstra said. 2573

Air New Zealand gets regular kudos for innovating everything from in-flight services to safety videos, its funky films featuring Hobbits and other famous Kiwis. And now, for the fifth consecutive year, the carrier has come out on top in the annual Airline Excellence Awards, created by Australia-based aviation safety and product rating agency AirlineRatings.Celebrating the best in the aviation industry -- from budget operators to culinary champions -- the awards named Air New Zealand as Airline of the Year for 2018."Air New Zealand came out number one -- or equal first -- in all of our audit criteria, which is an exceptional performance," the AirlineRatings judging panel said.In-flight productThe awards take into account four major international industry and government safety audits as well as fleet age, passenger reviews, profitability, investment ratings and key product offerings."We also look to see if the airline is an innovator trying new things to improve the passenger experience," says Geoffrey Thomas, editor-in-chief of AirlineRatings.com.In the premium stakes, Singapore Airlines took top spot for First Class -- the airline's name being "synonymous with excellence of in-flight product," according to AirlineRatings.Best Business Class went to Virgin Australia for the second consecutive year -- Virgin's "The Business" suite is a luxurious offering -- unrivaled by other executive options.AirlineRatings also reviewed the economy options -- Air New Zealand won Best Premium Economy, whilst Best Economy went to Korean Air in recognition of its spacious seats."Our editorial team places significant importance on premium economy on a long-haul airline," says Thomas. "It is without doubt the best value proposition for the passenger and airline.Australian airline Qantas also had a good run, winning Best Catering, Best Lounges and Best Domestic Class.Seven-star safetyAlongside the Airline Excellence Award winners, AirlineRatings announced its Top 10 airlines for 2018.The carriers named in the round-up have a seven-star safety rating and have demonstrated their innovation, according to AirlineRatings.''Whether number one or number 10 these airlines are the best of the best -- the elite in aviation," the judging team commented. "They are the trendsetters and the benchmark by which all others are judged."AirlineRatings says its judging team includes experts who've been assessing the world of aviation for 20 years. While the top airline list favors antipodean carriers, Thomas insists the process is "objective and not open to abuse," with criteria assessed carefully and combined into a spreadsheet to arrive at the award-winners.AirlineRatings.com's top 10 airlines for 20181. After running a year-long competition that drew interest from hundreds of cities and a number of states, Amazon has chosen New York City and Northern Virginia to split duty as its second headquarters. On Tuesday, Amazon announced it has chosen New York's Long Island City and Virginia's Arlington for HQ2.The development projects promise to bring the cities a giant infusion of high-paying jobs and tax revenue, but are almost certain to draw fire from critics concerned about their impact on infrastructure and property values. The search began in September 2017 when Seattle-based Amazon announced it would start accepting proposals for what quickly became known as HQ2.During the process, Amazon narrowed 238 bids to 20 finalists. The potential cities were Atlanta; Austin; Boston; Chicago; Columbus, Ohio; Dallas; Denver; Indianapolis; Los Angeles; Miami; Montgomery County, Maryland; Nashville; Newark; New York City; Northern Virginia; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Raleigh; Toronto and Washington, D.C. 1016

Although four people were killed, and 10 others were wounded by a gunman targeting a Northern California elementary school on Tuesday, authorities said the incident could have been more tragic.According to Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston, when school administrators heard gunshots ringing out nearly 1/4 mile from the school, the school immediately went into lockdown mode without the prompting of police. This, Johnston said, prevented an even worse tragedy at the school.“The shooter took his vehicle and rammed their fence and gate and entered the (school) grounds on foot with a semi-automatic rifle,” Johnston said. “It appears he couldn’t make access to the room and he gave up and reentered the vehicle.”Johnston confirmed that no children from the school were killed, but one was wounded. Johnston said that after being thwarted at the school, he went on a rampage in the community, as there were seven different shooting locations throughout Rancho Tehama. The Corning Union School District commended the effort of its employees. "School staff is commended for their courageous and professional response to this terrible incident. The school was able to go on lockdown very quickly and effectively, which prevented any further injury or violence," the district said in a statement.Rancho Tehama Elementary School educates students Kindergarten through Grade 5. 1415
