SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While California issued a "stay at home" order to slow the spread of the coronavirus, several "essential" services are still open.Thursday night, Gov. Gavin Newsom issued the order requiring Californians to remain home amid the COVID-19 pandemic.But residents aren't totally locked into their homes during the order.RELATED: What's the difference? Locals should also check specific locations they intend to use or visit to see if hours have been impacted by COVID-19.This also means that residents can still get outside, go on a walk, walk their dog, and take the kids outside, but social distancing should be practiced. I picked this college particularly because I felt like it was a good, holistic place for me to be and I was going to be getting a truly good education.""Just knowing that there are people who aren't putting in effort and I spent 13 years of my education just working so hard and these people aren't working at all and it's just it's very disheartening," Missica added. She volunteered more than 1,000 hours helping special needs children and has a merit scholarship.On the other side of the spectrum, some students weren't surprised at all. "This is basically like a smaller version of my high school and I saw this stuff like this happening there so this is all somewhat normal for me as bad as that sounds," Sophomore Jacob Asher said. When 10News asked the university who the varsity coach involved in the scandal was, they said they couldn't tell us, and that they're being as transparent as they can be.They sent this statement out yesterday:"The University of San Diego has been cooperating with the United States Department of Justice’s investigation involving an alleged criminal conspiracy to facilitate cheating on college entrance exams and admission into colleges and universities.We have no reason to believe that any members of our admissions team, our administration or staff, or our current coaching staff were aware of or involved in the alleged wrongdoing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With California setting single-day records this week for COVID-19 cases, experts say it’s important to keep in mind that some activities carry a higher risk of transmission than others.To gauge risk, it’s helpful to think of it like an equation, said Dr. Tyler Smith, a professor and epidemiologist at National University.First, consider the environmental factors like whether the activity will be indoors or outdoors and the number of people likely to be present.Then consider the likelihood of successful safety measures: whether people will wear masks, clean surfaces, and maintain six feet of distancing.Compare those two datapoints, and you can assess the overall risk of an activity, Smith said.A good example of the importance of this equation is the dentist’s office, our experts said.On one hand, the environmental risk factors are high. Working in someone’s mouth with drills can aerosolize particles that carry the virus.But dentists are likely to strictly observe public health countermeasures like personal protective equipment and sanitization, to balance out the risk equation.“Our doctors offices and dental offices are really some of the safest places right now,” said Dr. Georgine Nanos, a family physician who specializes in epidemiology.Dr. Smith agreed: dental offices are low risk.The likelihood that participants will wear masks is a critical part of the safety equation, according to Dr. Nanos.“What [the medical community] didn’t know four months ago is that wearing a mask can reduce the risk of transmission and catching COVID-19 by sometimes up to 60 percent if both people are wearing masks,” she said.Gyms are an environment where some may try to avoid wearing a face covering during a challenging workout.“If you can be 6 feet apart from your neighbor, that would be ideal. I wouldn’t recommend a hot yoga class where people are crowded together and not a lot of ventilation,” Dr. Nanos said.If you can maintain distance and bring your own sanitizer, ideally in a room with high ceilings and good ventilation, Dr. Nanos grades gyms medium risk.In the high-risk category, experts agree bars pose a particular challenge. Not only is there a chance you could encounter a large crowd indoors, alcohol could discourage social distancing efforts.Also high risk: casinos. In addition to alcohol, casinos have an environment with a lot of touchpoints like slot machines and chips. Many also allow indoor smoking, which could complicate health matters, Dr. Nanos pointed out.But the highest risk activity, according to both experts, is protests and rallies.“That many people together, not distancing, rarely wearing masks and yelling,” Dr. Smith said, That to me is terrifying as a public health professional.”They put large protests and rallies at the top because unlike other environments, there is no one in charge with a financial stake in maintaining public health countermeasures.Dr. Smith said any of these activities have the potential to be operated safely.“It just has to do with people realizing they have to adhere to these mandates. If so, all these things can be open. We’ll still have cases but it won’t overwhelm our healthcare system,” Dr. Smith. 3212

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Toni Beery and her husband Jonathon have their hands full trying to get Old Town’s Hungry’s Kitchen and Tap back up to speed.“There’s just not a lot of foot traffic, still, during the week especially,” Toni says. “We’re just trying to take it day by dayThey're trying to bring employees back and working to survive amid social distancing requirements. One new task on their plate is employee temperature checks and monitoring.New technology, however, is doing that for them. It’s called the GoSafe, a stand-alone tablet two San Diego companies developed. Using Qualcomm's chips, San Diego-based OneScreen built a device that takes temperatures and uses facial recognition to allow or deny access to different workplaces and schools.Additionally, the GoSafe can assist health investigators in contact tracing. If someone shows an elevated temperature, it will have a record of who else scanned in around the same time.“It is not only a race against the vaccine, it is a race to go back to normalcy,” said Sanjeet Pandit, Qualcomm’s director of smart cities.San Diego’s Fluid Sound is now working to install the devices at businesses around our region.It recently did so as a test at Hungry’s, and demonstrated how it can reject access for people without masks. The device’s MSRP is ,995.“If you think about the labor cost associated with implementing a health screening process for any business, big or small, it's a significant labor cost,” said Dennis Pappenfus, CEO of Fluid Sound. “This is more of a one-time cost and you've got a pretty good process off to the races."Nationwide, 2,000 of the devices have already sold.In addition to Hungry’s, a spokesman for Fluid Sound says the devices are installed, or could soon be, at places such as Qualcomm headquarters, The Port of San Diego, and the University of San Diego.In a statement from USD, a spokesperson says GoSafe is one device they've considered in their reopening plans."As the University of San Diego prepares for the re-opening of our campus in August, the Return to Work Task Force is looking at a variety of devices and safety procedures to keep our students and employees safe as they return to the office and the classrooms. While GoSafe is one device we have been presented with, it is not the only temperature device we are currently assessing and demoing, no purchases have been made yet. We continue to search for the best technology available to keep our campus community safe and healthy," Lissette Martinez, senior director of media relations, said.A spokeswoman for the Port of San Diego says the agency ordered three of the devices, which will be delivered Tuesday. 2672

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego mother says working from home during the coronavirus pandemic cost her her job. She claims she was fired because her kids were making noises in the background of her teleconference calls."We're letting you go," Drisana Rios said. That was what her Human Resources representative told her in a call earlier this month. She said she thought the call was supposed to help resolve her workplace problems. Instead, by the end of the call, she says she was fired.Rios says it all began in mid-March when her bosses at an out-of-state insurance firm told her to work from home and telecommute via conference calls. This was in response to the state's COVID-19 lockdown orders.Rios says all parents working from home received an email from the company's regional boss that read, "thank you for the incredible effort you are putting forth through these difficult times." She says it also said that they would avoid layoffs during the pandemic.Like many parents, Rios was unable to find childcare for her four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. Despite juggling parenting and working from home, Rios claims she was able to complete all her tasks. She adds that her clients never complained about her kids being in the background of her conference calls. The only complaints, she says, came from her male, direct superior."I said, 'Do you want me to lock my kids in the room? My one-year-old in the room? Do you want me to do that?' And… he responded and said, 'Figure it out.'" Rios said.She says she tried to arrange calls to be during her children's afternoon naptimes but claims her boss continued to ignore and demean her."He would purposely overlap schedules," Rios said.Rios then reached out to her HR department and asked how she should deal with the harassment she says she was experiencing-- a move she says that backfired a week later."She was shamed for having children, so she first elevated it to Human Resources," Daphne Delvaux, Sr. trial attorney at Gruenberg Law, said. "Human Resources took the side of the abusive manager, and terminated her for complaining."Rios has since filed a lawsuit against both her direct boss and the company for Gender discrimination, Retaliation, Gender harassment, Failure to prevent gender discrimination, Negligent supervision, Intentional infliction of emotional distress, and Wrongful termination in violation of public policy.In her complaint, Rios claims her HR representative told her that the company was "...experiencing a reduced revenue due to COVID-19 and they were laying [the] plaintiff off as a result of the pandemic." But Rios believes this was retaliation."The fact that they tried to cover it up because I went to HR, it's obvious what they did," Rios said.ABC 10News reached out to the company headquarters for comment on this lawsuit.
