"This is unprecedented. No one has had to deal with this magnitude that caused so much destruction and regrettably so much death."Meanwhile, displaced residents are in limbo. Many are in Chico, Butte County's most populous city, about 15 miles from ground zero of the disaster, the town of Paradise.Some evacuees are staying with friends and family. Others are in a tent city in a Walmart parking lot. On Sunday, those seeking a place to grieve trickled into the First Christian Church of Chico for a candlelight vigil.A sign in the church set an intention for the hourslong open memorial: "We will rise from the ashes."The Camp Fire is already the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history. And with 993 people still unaccounted for, officials fear the death toll could keep rising.Crews are combing the remnants of houses where all evidence of life has been wiped out by flames. When Francesca Marie McNally was born, she was the perfect baby. “Perfectly healthy. Beautiful. Very interactive,” describes her dad, Sean McNally. He and his wife Veronica were in love with their little girl. Just before she turned three months old, she started coughing.  “We saw four doctors,” said Veronica. “None of the doctors we were seeing, and there were so many, really knew what it was,” said Sean.After not getting answers from their pediatrician's office and local emergency rooms, they took their baby to Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. Doctors there immediately recognized how serious the situation was. She was rushed into intensive care. She did not make it. “It is with me every day. I think about her every day. I feel that loss every day,” said Veronica. Doctors found out too late that Francesca had whooping cough and they also found out how she caught it. “I had whooping cough. I don’t know where I got it from. I look back and wish that I would have known more about the way I could have protected myself and my family,” said Veronica. Babies cannot be vaccinated against whooping cough, but doctors recommend those who care for them are. Veronica says she asked why she wasn’t told this during her pregnancy. According to medical records, on the day of her delivery, a nurse offered her the Tdap shot, which is the whooping cough vaccine. 1449

With most Kindergarten through grade 12 schools starting in less than a month, many parents are trying to figure out what is best for their family when given the option between in-person or virtual learning?What about preschool for 3 to 5-year-olds who were looking forward to in-person learning this fall?For parents who believe it’s safer to keep their child home, there are ways to get them learning beyond the A, B, C’s.“With our younger children we know they really thrive in predictability and routine and that is all gone right now,” said parenting expert Carly Dorogi.Preschool participation has fallen by half during the pandemic, according to the National Institute for Early Education Research. But that doesn’t mean kids can’t learn at home.Dorogi says children ages 3 to 5 can learn math using everyday items.“If I have five Cheerios on the table this is what five looks like and it’s a small amount compared to when I have ten Cheerios on the table,” Dorogi said.Playing with dolls or action figures can help language skills, forcing children to talk and put sentences together. Playtime is motor skills time.“Our little guys can actually improve their handwriting by playing with play dough or doing anything that’s a small motor that strengthens their hand muscles,” Dorogi said.If you want to introduce virtual learning, Dorogi suggests Osmo’s starter kit. "Sitting at a desk for even an hour is too much and I don’t want parents to feel like that’s the expectation. So, think about alternative seating.
