WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican National Committee is sharply restricting attendance on three of the four nights of its convention in Jacksonville, Florida, next month as coronavirus cases are spiking in the state.RNC chair Ronna McDaniel says only the roughly 2,500 regular delegates to the convention will be permitted to attend the opening three nights.Delegates, their guests and alternate delegates will be permitted to attend the final night, Aug. 27, when President Donald Trump is set to deliver his acceptance speech.The Washington Post obtained a letter sent to delegates about scaling back the convention. He said it will be called the “1776 Commission,” named after the year the United States was founded.“It will encourage our educators to teach our children about the miracle of American history and make plans to honor the 250th anniversary of our founding,” said Trump during a speech at the National Archive Museum on Constitution Day.Trump also announced that the National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded a grant to support the development of pro-American curriculum that he says celebrates the truth about the nation’s history.“The only path to national unity is through our shared identity as Americans,” said Trump. “That is why it is so urgent that we restore patriotic education to our schools.”During his speech, Trump took aim, again, at The 1619 Project, an initiative developed by The New York Times Magazine in 2019. The project “aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.”Trump claims The 1619 Project distorts American History and he blames Democrats.“The left has warped, distorted and defiled the American story with deceptions, falsehoods and lies. WASHINGTON, D.C. – As restrictions are eased around the country, several states are seeing higher rates of coronavirus infections.Data tracked by The Washington Post shows that since the beginning of June, 14 states and Puerto Rico have recorded their highest seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.Those states include Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Kentucky, New Mexico, North Carolina, Mississippi, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah, according to The Post.CNN reports that the number of states seeing upward trends in coronavirus cases is even higher, at 22.With many of these states, like Florida and Mississippi, now under only minor-to-moderate restrictions, health experts worry the spread of the virus could snowball in these areas and possibly overwhelm hospitals.The first wave of the pandemic moved through major metropolitan areas, like New York City and Los Angeles, but those cities are now moving towards reopening. WAVELAND, Miss. — Storm-weary Gulf Coast residents are preparing for a new weather onslaught as Tropical Storm Sally churns northward. Forecasters from the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Sally is expected to become a hurricane on Monday and reach shore by early Tuesday, bringing dangerous weather conditions including risk of flooding to a region stretching from the western Florida Panhandle to southeast Louisiana. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards urged people to prepare for the storm immediately. He also said there are still many from southwestern Louisiana who evacuated from Hurricane Laura into New Orleans — exactly the area that could be hit by Sally.As the Gulf Coast braced for Sally, Bermuda was hunkered down and riding out the effects of Hurricane Paulette. That storm — with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph as of 4 a.m. ET — was hovering above the Atlantic island nation as of Monday morning. The storm is expected to impact Bermuda throughout the day on Monday before moving west on Tuesday.Also on Monday, Tropical Storm Teddy formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. According to National Hurricane Center forecasts, it's not expected to make landfall until next week if it doesn't dissipate by then.Teddy marks the 19th named storm of 2020.
