It adds to happiness of the anniversary of the People's Republic, and it brings the Expo 2010 Shanghai event to a new height. At the outset, I wish to extend, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, warm welcome and sincere thanks to all distinguished guests attending the China National Pavilion Day events.Expo 2010 Shanghai is the first such global event hosted by a developing country in the history of the world expo. In the past five months, participants from 246 countries and international organizations have gathered by the Huangpu River to attend the Expo. The Expo site has hosted over 100 foreign leaders and nearly 60 million Chinese and foreign visitors. Together with the over two million dedicated volunteers from home and abroad, they have made "Better City, Better Life" a living reality. In the less than six square kilometer Expo Park, pavilions of diverse styles bearing distinct features of different countries stand alongside each other, hosting creative exhibitions and various cultural performances, not to mention the unique Urban Best Practices Area and the inspiring forum dialogues. Together, they form a vivid picture of the diverse world and the harmonious co-existence of different cultures and civilizations. We have every reason to believe that, with concerted efforts of all sides, Expo 2010 Shanghai will surely be a successful, splendid and unforgettable event. For over 5,000 years, generation after generation of the Chinese people of different ethnic groups have lived on this vast land. They have formed a fine character of diligence, courage and self-reliance. They are open-minded and inclusive. They dare to innovate and explore new ways of development. The contribution they have made to the progress of human civilization is significant and indelible.Over the past 60 years or more since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Communist Party of China has led the Chinese people of all ethnic groups in an earth-shaking and pioneering endeavor and succeeded in bringing about three historic shifts: the shift from a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society to a new society of national independence, where people are the masters of their own country; the shift from a new democratic revolution to a socialist revolution and development; and the shift from a highly centralized planned economy to a robust socialist market economy and from a closed or semi-closed state to one of all-round opening up. These are indeed epoch-making changes of the Chinese nation. In the past 30 years since the beginning of reform and opening-up, China's economy has maintained rapid growth rarely seen in the world. BEIJING, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks rose for a third straight trading day Monday with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closing up 0.96 percent, or 30.01 points, at 3,159.51.The Shenzhen Component Index gained 0.54 percent, or 73.94 points, to finish at 13,807.3.Combined turnover declined to 453.1 billion yuan (68 billion U.S. dollars) from 459.17 billion yuan the previous trading day.Gainers outnumbered losers 743 to 132 in Shanghai and 950 to 140 in Shenzhen.Agricultural shares led the gains with a 5.39 percent rise amid increased inflation expectations and surging farm product prices.Some economists believe China's consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, jumped 4 percent year on year in October.Yasheng Industrial Group, Yongan Forestry Group and Fengle Seed Company all rose by the daily limit of 10 percent, ending at 6.47 yuan, 12.84 yuan and 20.77 yuan, respectively.Local stocks in Shanghai continued their surge after Walt Disney Co. inked a deal Friday for its long-awaited theme park in the city.Shanghai Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone Development Co., Ltd rose 4.8 percent to 22.7 yuan while Shanghai Pudong Road and Bridge Construction Co. BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- The 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) opened its fifth plenary session in Beijing Friday to discuss the nation's next five-year development plan.The four-day meeting will review proposals for the country's 12th five-year program (2011-2015) on national economic and social development.The period would be critical for building a moderately prosperous society, the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee announced last month.It would be a time of difficult issues for deepening the reform and opening-up process while accelerating the transformation of the nation's economic development pattern, said the announcement.China has pledged to build a "xiaokang" -- moderately prosperous -- society in the first two decades of the 21st century."The next five-year program will be vital for dealing with difficulties to realize the objective by 2020," said Prof. Hu Angang, a prominent expert on China's national situation in Beijing."The new program will basically be in accordance with the principles of Scientific Outlook on Development," Hu said.Despite of high GDP growth for years, China still faces huge challenges in development, ranging from unbalanced economic growth pattern, widening gap between urban and rural areas and between different regions, to environmental problems as well as international trade protectionism."China's export-driven economic growth is unsustainable," said Justin Yifu Lin, World Bank Chief Economist and Senior Vice President."Transformation of the country's economic growth pattern should still be a major issue for the next five years, 15 years and even a longer period of time."The CPC Central Committee Political Bureau said in a last month's statement that transformation of the economic growth pattern should be based on improving people's livelihoods.President Hu Jintao has pledged to adopt "Inclusive Growth," a concept created and advocated by Asian Development Bank in 2007, for resolving social problems as a result of economic development.According to Hu, inclusive growth means to spread the benefits of economic globalization and development among all countries, regions and people and to realize balanced economic and social progress through sustainable development.World Bank President Robert Zoellick said developing countries will play a more important role in balancing and stabilizing the world economy, and China's effort will be of great significance for restructuring the world economy after global downturn.A draft version of the proposals for the 12th five-year program has been offered to some delegates of the CPC's 17th National Congress and organizations outside the Party.The document was further revised based on their suggestions.Sources with the CPC said the proposals, accumulated from throughout the Party and other organizations, would become a guideline document for China's continued reform and opening-up process as well as socialist modernization.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) - Flooding has killed at least 13 people and left 34 missing in south China's Guangdong Province on Tuesday, local authorities said.Heavy rains caused by typhoon Fanabi battered many parts of Guangdong Tuesday.Further, a dam at the Xinyi Yinyan Tin Mine, owned by Zijin Mining Group Co. in Qianbai Township of Xinyi City, collapsed after being hit by a landslide, leaving five dead, six missing and seven injured, Xinxi city government officials said.Landslides and floods also killed three, buried 12 and left three others missing in Rupingtang Township, it said.The disasters toppled 346 houses and also has caused economic losses of 460 million yuan (68.5 million U.S. dollars) in Xinyi.In Yangchun City, flooding is reported to have killed three, left eight missing and forced the evacuation of 18,930 villagers. .Shuangjiao Township in Yangchun received 548.5 mm of rainfall in seven hours through 8 a.m. Tuesday, the largest rainfall in 58 years, according to authorities.Flood also killed two people and left five missing in Gaozhou City.
