SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Awaken Church continues to hold indoors services, despite orders from San Diego County to close all indoor religious services due to COVID-19 restrictions.According to the San Diego County website, three of the Awaken Church locations have received cease and desist orders. The location at 7620 Balboa Ave. received a cease and desist order July 17, 2020; the Carlsbad location received one Nov. 16, 2020; and the Chula Vista location received one Nov. 19, 2020.RELATED: Churches pushing back against purple tier restrictionsIn addition, San Diego County put out a notice that anyone who went to the location at 7620 Balboa Ave. between Nov. 15 and Nov. 22 needs to quarantine for two weeks because of a community outbreak. The county said a community outbreak had occurred there, which is when there are three or more reported cases from different homes in the span of two weeks.An attendee at the San Marcus location said he feels comfortable attending in person and indoors.“I think it’s really about having individual choice and trusting people to have the intelligence to do the right thing, and this church has a wonderful uplifting message that I think is so positive and hopeful for people in a time where we find ourselves somewhat down,” said Brian.Brian said that the San Marcos facility is spacious so people are able to spread out, adding that the right to worship freely is in the constitution.RELATED: County asks Kearny Mesa church attendees to quarantine after COVID-19 outbreak“Try to preserve as much of our freedoms and liberties as we can. Also, the website asks attendees to refrain from posting pictures and videos of the services on social media.A video of church leaders posted on the website describes their decision to remain open for in person and indoor services.“We’ve made this decision not out of defiance but out of obedience to God,” two people said in a video on the website, adding that they plan to continue in person services.A county spokesperson said if a cease and desist order is ignored, the next step would be a closure order. After that, law enforcement is asked to get involved by giving citations with a thousand dollar fine for each violation; then the case goes to either the San Diego District Attorney or City Attorney. 2635

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Boulevard Fitness in University Heights is open for business, with a line of people wrapped around the building waiting to go inside to workout on Tuesday, even though they’re not supposed to be open.Last week, San Diego County Supervisors said the county would be cracking down on businesses that violate public health orders put into place due to the coronavirus pandemic.A gym owner in Ramona was recently charged with several misdemeanors for staying open for indoor workouts. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office said Peter San Nicolas, owner of Ramona Fitness Center, faces five charges that each carry ,000 fines.However, at Boulevard Fitness, staff members told ABC 10News they’ve had visits from police telling them they should not be open, but nothing more.The gym on El Cajon Boulevard is limiting the number of people inside and increasing cleaning and other measures to try to limit the risk of potential virus exposure to gym members.A San Diego Police Department spokesperson said officers are responding to complaints about businesses that are open when they’re not supposed to be, but police are -- at this point -- only educating businesses that may be in violation of the health order and not physically forcing any shutdowns.San Nicolas is holding a rally in Ramona Tuesday night in hopes of getting the word out that small businesses, including gyms like his, are still trying desperately to survive -- even if, in some cases, it means facing charges to stay open. 1526

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As we cast our ballots in this year's election, it's a good time to reflect on how our freedom to vote came at a cost. A member of the Greatest Generation looks back at how he and his fellow service members risked their lives to preserve that freedom and how his love for America began about 90 years ago.It started in North Carolina in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Forrest "Huff" Huffstetler, 96, says, "I remember how people suffered back then and I remember people lining up to get a bowl of soup."Despite the hardship, he remembers his life growing up on a farm fondly."We had our own pigs, fresh vegetables and we had cans. My mother and my grandmother would can all the food for us for the winter. We had it pretty good."It's that optimism that motivated Huff to make a decision that would change his life."I was delivering newspapers at 4 o'clock in the morning and that's when the post office had out a picture of Uncle Sam pointing a finger at you."The poster he saw encouraged people to enlist. He says his instant reaction was, "Man this is a good deal, I'd like to get in the Army."He was 15 and a half years old. He managed to enlist by convincing the notary public, who was also his aunt, that he was 18. He says it was well worth it. "I loved the Army. We had three meals a day, I had all my clothes given to me and I wanted nothing. It was wonderful."For more a month, Huff signed on to become a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. After two tours of duty came D-Day and that defining moment, the jump over Normandy. He remembers seeing the tens of thousands of service members around him."There were paratroopers everywhere and ships out in the channel, there in the channel as far as you could see."The first town Huff helped liberate was Sainte-Mere-Eglise, which explains the hero's welcome back he received last year on the 75th anniversary of D-Day. He looks back at the unity in their fight for freedom back then and says it makes him sad to see people divided today."It breaks my heart. All these men died fighting for this country," he says, "Freedom doesn't come for free, there's nothing for free."That's why Huff votes."I remember the first time I ever voted was when I came out of the service. I was 21 years old, and it was an honor for me to go vote," he says.He wants everyone to exercise that freedom and says he also thinks things will get better. "Things are going to change. We're going to get our country back together working together." After his service, Huff worked in the restaurant industry including owning a restaurant for 20 years. He eventually made a home in San Marcos. In December, Huff will turn 97 years old. 2717

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As a Hillcrest man showered in his apartment, an intruder was helping himself to a "priceless" pendant.The surveillance video that Ramon Castillo has seen countless times remains hard to watch."Scary and very disturbing," said Castillo.In late June on a Monday morning just before 9, Castillo was showering in his apartment on 3rd Avenue. What he didn't know know: he wasn't alone. When Castillo got out of the shower after 20 minutes, the screen door which had been locked was completely open. Surveillance video revealed why. In it, a man pauses at the door and somehow gets past the screen door, before quietly raiding the apartment. Among the items stolen were speakers and a safe from a bedroom closet. Inside the safe: cash, personal documents and jewelry, including a silver pendant containing the ashes of her mother. She passed away in 2015 from an accidental drug overdose."I can't replace that. It's the last thing of my mom and now I don't have anything," said Castillo.The thief who snatched it was in and out in about five minutes. He was seen driving off in a sedan. Castillo say the burglar had to have heard the shower running and went in anyways."He didn't think twice about it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Charles Schwab is the latest large investment firm to offer fractional stocks as a way to get more people to invest.The move puts more high-dollar, blue chip stocks within reach for younger customers."It's a big win to consumers in general," says Steven Fox, the owner of Next Gen Financial Planning. "That's particularly helpful for younger investors because they typically tend to have smaller accounts."A recent report says that 66% of millennials say they're afraid of the stock market. Fox thinks it's because that generation watched their parents go through multiple downturns and were turned off by its volatility.But, Fox says fractional stocks, and other new ideas from large companies are enticing more people to invest. He says many firms are starting to offer perks like zero-commission trades, fractional stocks, and on-line based accounts to help people save money and invest more."It may only be 1%, but for a lot of people over a long period of time, as you account grows more and more, that 1% can mean a difference of tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars that you would have available to pull out later in life."Fox says it also helps people keep a more diverse portfolio.
