SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler lied to me. He lied to Padres fans all around San Diego. It was a giant, bald-faced lie. Wasn't it great?Last September, as a dismal 66-win season was winding to a close, I had a chance to interview Fowler on my Mighty 1090 morning radio show, "Ben and Woods." I asked him about the possibility of pursing Manny Machado on the free agent market."Machado, I think, is somebody that every team would like," Fowler said before adding the dreaded "but" to the sentence. "But if we're looking at someone who's looking at 10 years and 0 million, I don't think that's something we're looking to do."Then, 145 days later, Fowler made himself into a liar, authorizing exactly what he said he wouldn't do -- a 10-year, 0 million contract for Machado. RELATED: Reports: San Diego Padres, free agent Manny Machado agree to termsWas Fowler playing the long con, lulling other potential suitors into a false sense of security?Doubtful. I believe he was being honest on the radio in September. Instead, look at the teams who weren't seriously involved in the bidding for Machado. The Yankees, the Dodgers, the Red Sox, the Giants; they all had their reasons, but none of them made a Godfather offer that would have knocked the Padres out of the running.RELATED: Machado signing brings hope to San Diego Padres fans, businesses near Petco ParkThe cold stove of the offseason also likely played a factor. A source told me the Padres were high on two third baseman in the Reds organization -- big leaguer Eugenio Suarez and top prospect Nick Senzel. But with little movement around baseball on free agents and trades -- and undoubtedly a high asking price by the Reds -- a deal never materialized. The Padres' hole at third remained, and there was Machado, still waiting for the right fit on the free agent market. Finally, don't discount general manager A.J. Preller's powers of persuasion. He was able to convince his bosses that the right guy for the Padres was available now and this was a one-time opportunity."You could wait for some of the young talent that we've built up and look at 3 or 4 years and hope the right guys are out there," Preller told reporters at Cactus League media day in Arizona, "but if pieces that fit for us both in the short-term and long-term are out there, that's how you build a club." Whatever the reason, Fowler's mind was changed and Machado is a Padre. Go ahead and whisper those sweet lies, Uncle Ron. 2492

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of the country's best spots to lay and in the sand and watch the tide roll in is right in San Diego.Stephen Leatherman, a professor at Florida International University more widely known as "Dr. Beach," has released his annual list of the best beaches in the U.S. Rounding out the top 10 at number nine is San Diego's own Coronado Beach for the second straight year.Tucked along Coronado, the beach is hailed by Leatherman as a local oasis and "toast of Southern California."RELATED: Coronado's Free Summer Shuttle service launches before Memorial Day"Coronado Beach is the toast of Southern California; it is a veritable oasis by the sea, measuring hundreds of yards wide. With its lush subtropical vegetation, unique Mediterranean climate, and fine sparkling sand, beach-goers flock to this beach for great ship-watching and the summer’s warm and mild surf," Leatherman writes. The Hotel del Coronado is also touted for its "Old World elegance" and appeal that it adds to the sandy shores. Coronado Beach was the only California beach to make the list. Topping the beach rankings is Kailua Beach Park in Oahu, Hawaii. So what makes Leatherman the expert? He uses 50 criteria to evaluate beaches, including water and sand quality as well as safety and management. Since 1991, the professor has graded beaches and is regarded as a coastal expert, from storm impacts and coastal erosion to beach health. 1430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Officials with two of Southern California's largest schools districts have announced closures effective Monday, March 16, as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. The Los Angeles Unified School District and the San Diego Unified School District said Friday that campuses are expected to reopen April 6.RELATED COVERAGE: What's been canceled, postponed in San Diego, nationally due to coronavirusThe closures will keep a combined 750,000 students off campus for three weeks heading into spring break. LAUSD and SDUSD join numerous other school systems taking similar measures as the number of COVID-19 cases continue to rise.Superintendent Austin Beutner of Los Angeles and Superintendent Cindy Marten of San Diego have issued the following joint statement: “California has now entered a critical new phase in the fight to stop the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic,” they said. “There is evidence the virus is already present in the communities we serve, and our efforts now must be aimed at preventing its spread. We believe closing the state’s two largest school districts will make an important contribution to this effort. For that reason, we plan to close, effective Monday, March 16. “Later today, we will be providing students, parents and staff with more information on our plans to continue providing learning opportunities for students during the closure. We have also directed staff at both districts to prepare to continue providing nutrition and other supports through family resource facilities.” The boards of Los Angeles Unified and San Diego Unified School Districts have unanimously approved this action. San Diego Unified plans to reopen schools on April 6th, unless conditions call for an extension. SDUSD's closures will shutter 113 elementary schools, 24 middle schools, 4 atypical schools, 10 alternative schools, 27 high schools and 25 charter schools.Friday's announcement comes after San Diego County officials issued a public health order banning mass gatherings of 250 people or more through the end of March.READ: San Diego County officials ban large gatherings 2144

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Parents and students are concerned after someone found a bullet in a Point Loma High School restroom. The incident was reported on Monday and while students say there was a lack of communication from school staff, word traveled fast on campus. The school says police are now investigating. "We never heard anything over the intercom or anything," says senior Javan Hedrick. "In my 4th period class, it came up out of nowhere. Everyone was talking about some bullet found in the boys bathroom." Around noon, parents received an email sent from the school's principal, that says in part: "At Point Loma, our first priority is to provide a safe and secure learning environment for our students. As such, I wanted to make you aware of an incident that occurred this morning. School Police investigated a report of a bullet found on the floor of the boys restroom. After an investigation, it was determined there was no threat."Some parents pulled their kids out of class and aren't sure when they'll send them back. "I walked into the office, it was a crazy amount of kids trying to go home," says Hedrick. Students say they would have felt a little better if school staff talked to them about the incident. "If something was to happen, no one would of had any idea."The principal is encouraging students to contact Crime Stoppers if they have any information about the incident at 888-580-8477 or text 27463 (CRIMES).
