The freewheeling entrepreneur who built Tower Records into a global business and pioneered a new way to sell music has died at 92.Russ Solomon, who started selling records at his father's pharmacy in the 1950s, passed away on Sunday at his home near Sacramento, California.The founder of Tower Records died while watching the Academy Awards, his son Michael Solomon told the Sacramento Bee."He was giving his opinion of what someone was wearing that he thought was ugly, then asked [his wife] Patti to refill his whiskey," Michael Solomon told the newspaper.Solomon had passed away by the time his wife returned.The first Tower Records opened in Sacramento in 1960, and by 1968 the company had expanded to San Francisco. Its iconic yellow and red signs would later be seen as far away as London and Tokyo.Fans flocked to the stores, attracted by a relaxed atmosphere where it was easy to bond with other music aficionados. Solomon did not have a dress code for employees, who mixed easily with customers."If you came into town, you went into Tower Records," Bruce Springsteen said in a documentary about the company called "All Things Must Pass."Solomon told Billboard Magazine in 2015 that his favorite regular was Elton John."He probably was the best customer we ever had," Solomon said of the pop star. "He was in one of our stores every week, literally, wherever he was -- in L.A., in Atlanta when he lived in Atlanta, and in New York."The chain thrived on massive demand for physical music -- first records and then CDs. Solomon built sprawling mega stores where fans could find everything from pop hits to obscure albums.But the retailer was soon undermined by dramatic changes in the music industry.The rise of music sharing sites such as Napster put it under pressure, and the company's debt ballooned. The Camp Fire is just the latest fire tragedy in California. Residents are still rebuilding in Wine Country more than a year after the destructive wildfires there.In the one year since Kelly Bracewell's Santa Rosa home turned to ash, she's figured out how to be happier. She’s also learned how to live without some of her most cherished possessions.As she rebuilds her own home, she works to help others who lost everything."As an interior designer, it’s been a great distraction,” she says.She says she wants to help put the community back together.Another community member, artist Gregory Roberts, is also using his talents to help people heal.One artist is using the ashes to help the people who lost their homes heal.“I was standing in the studio during the fires, and ash was falling all around,” Roberts describes.Roberts was certain that he, too, would lose his home. Fortunately, his house and pottery studio survived, but the ash raining down over Wine Country gave him an idea.“I wanted to be able to give people back something to let them know that your memories are not actually lost; your memories are all still intact,” he says.Roberts started collecting ash from lost homes. Ashes from 140 homes appeared in a plastic bin on his front porch, some with handwritten notes, of people wanting him to create art from their lost homes."Something from their home, because this idea that everything is lost is a hard one to overcome," Roberts says.Roberts says the ash remnants of homes are different, so the patterns and colors are never the same."I really want each one to be sort of its own unique animal,” Roberts says. “In the same way that each person's home is unique." 1691

The Department of Education said Thursday that it would wipe away student debt for 15,000 borrowers, implementing an Obama-era rule that Secretary Betsy DeVos has fought to block for more than a year.The debt cancellations will total about 0 million.The rule, known as Borrower Defense to Repayment, was designed to help students cheated by for-profit colleges get relief on their education debt.The announcement comes about two months after a federal judge ordered immediate implementation of the rule.
