Jonathan Currier, with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in San Diego's North County, was reported overboard at 9:40 a.m. Thursday while the USS Essex was conducting routine operations in the Sulu Sea.Currier was declared dead on Aug. 17, 13th MEU Capt. Diann Rosenfield said. "Our hearts go out to the Currier family," said Col. Chandler Nelms, commanding officer, 13th MEU. "Cpl. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An elderly disabled woman was assaulted and seriously injured in downtown San Diego, police said Saturday.The victim, a 73-year-old homeless woman who uses a walker, was attacked near the corner of Fourth Avenue and B Street at 10:10 p.m. Friday, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs of the San Diego Police Department's homicide unit.She was taken to the hospital where she underwent emergency surgery, the lieutenant said. Because of the serious nature of the woman's injuries, investigators from the SDPD's homicide unit were called to the scene."Detectives are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses," Dobbs said. "A man was seen in an altercation with the victim. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con dubbed the "Bad Grandpa" bandit because of the disguise he wore while robbing four banks in San Diego is scheduled to be sentenced today at the downtown courthouse.James Saputo, 51, pleaded guilty in June to robbery, attempted robbery and other charges. He faces more than 130 years to life in prison.Saputo was arrested twice in 2016 on drug charges and was out of custody on bail when he committed the bank robberies in San Diego between Feb. 12 and March 30 last year, said Deputy District Attorney Lucy Yturralde.The defendant is also accused of robbing seven banks in Riverside and Orange counties, the prosecutor said.Authorities nicknamed Saputo the "Bad Grandpa" bandit because of the elderly disguise he wore, which included a wig, glasses and a cane.Saputo's criminal record dates back to 1986.
