POWAY, Calif., (KGTV)-- Fire crews battled a house fire in Poway Sunday afternoon after neighbors heard hissing sounds and an explosion. Poway and San Diego Fire departments responded to the 13,000 block of Silver Saddle Lane after getting a 9-1-1 call at around 1:15 pm. When crews arrived, they found the side of the home on fire. "The fire was just on the garage and the exterior of the garage. It appears it did not make it into the house," Poway Fire Battalion Chief Ray Fried said. Batt. Chief Fried said the methane levels were too high, above 0 ppm, which meant his fire crews needed to stand down until SDG&E cleared the gas leak. "We're not going inside at this time, because the gas readings are fairly high inside the house," Batt. Chief Fried said. No one was inside the home at the time of the explosion. (KGTV) — Suspected Poway Synagogue shooter John Earnest did not have a valid hunting license when he purchased his gun at a San Diego dealer, meaning he was too young to buy the firearm used in the attack, a state senator said Monday. State Sen. Anthony Portantino told 10News that the Department of Justice and Fish and Wildlife confirmed to him that Earnest did not have a valid hunting license when he bought the gun from San Diego Guns on Mission Gorge Rd.On Tuesday, Fish and Wildlife confirmed Earnest's hunting license was not going to become valid until July 1, 2019 — more than two months after the attack. A valid hunting license was one exception to a law Portantino authored that set the age limit to 21 to buy a firearm. The exceptions were for military, law enforcement, and those with a state-issued valid hunting license. The bill's proponents said people under 21 are disproportionately linked to crime. Asked how Earnest did buy the gun, Portantino said it was the big question."He did not have a valid hunting license," Portantino said. "I don't think it was a fault of the law ... I don't know where the mistake was made."Former Gov. Jerry Brown signed the legislation in response to the 2018 mass shooting at Stoneman Douglass High School in Parkland, Fla. (KGTV) - Burglars left behind a trail of destruction at two locations, which included an apparent attempt to delay a Poway family's return home.Just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, doorbell video shows Diana's family pulling out of their driveway in Poway, bound for a jujitsu class in Kearny Mesa. After that class, they discovered one of the tires on their van flattened. The culprit: the metal valve on that tire had been sliced. They got their van towed to a mechanic and received an Uber ride to their home off Pomerardo Road, arriving just before 7:15 p.m."The first thing we noticed was our doorbell was on the ground," said Diana.Her Ring doorbell had been yanked out. Inside the home was darkness."Our power was cut. It was pitch black. My kids were terrified," said Diana.Her kids, ages 8 and 10, remained outside while her husband, Jay, went inside with a phone light."I thought someone took a sledgehammer to the house, or a hammer, or a bat," said Jay.The trail of destruction up his staircase was caused by none of those things. Instead, the damage was made by their 400 lb. safe, shoved out of their bedroom by the intruders."What they likely did was roll it on its side and shove it down the steps," said Diana.Inside the safe were two iPads, two watch winders and a gold-and-diamond Rolex watch that Jay had spent years saving for.Turns out the burglars had gone to the side of the house, opened up the electrical box and cut the power, before drilling open a keyhole in the patio door. But another action is perhaps the most disturbing part of the crime. In the video, moments after they leave, you can hear an engine start. A van appears to follow their van.
