SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Neighborhoods near the Miramar Landfill are reporting a resurgence of awful odors they believe are coming from the landfill. "You come out the door in the morning and it just hits you," said Matty Wuest of University City. About a mile away, fellow resident Janis Deady concurs. "Like last night at in the morning," she says, "the smell woke me up out of a dead sleep." So, exactly what does it smell like? The distant neighbors are at no loss for words. "If you take the natural gas smell," said Matty, "Mix that with dog poop and vomit. That's what it smell like." Janis said she'd lived near the landfill for more than 20 years without an issue, but that changed about three years ago. "All of the sudden in the 2016 we started smelling putrid, disgusting, horrid smells."The distant neighbors say complaints in 2016 lead to hearings with the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District; resulting in fines for the City of San Diego and mitigation measures that appeared to solve the problem. But in recent weeks they say the smell is back."You shouldn't have to live like that," said Janis, "Not when we pay these taxes." A public information officer for San Diego said by phone the short story is the rain. That as soon as the Miramar Landfill has a chance to dry out from all the recent rains, the odors will dry up as well. But residents say that's not sufficient. "I hope the city would mitigate this and not blame it on the rain or other excuses." Said Matty. "Bottom line," said Janis, "It's got to stop. This is from 2016 to now. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police were called to a La Jolla mansion known to host Airbnb parties for the second time in months following reports of wild and violent parties. Alysa Dale says the multi-million dollar mansion was the scene of a violent party packed with teenagers over the weekend. Amid the chaos, Dale says her 18-year-old daughter was brutally attacked. “Physically she’s fine, but mentally she’s broken. I have a broken child right now,” Dale said. RELATED: Gunfire reported during party at La Jolla mansionDale says she stopped by the home Sunday morning to get answers. “Broken light fixtures, urine on the floor, drug residue on tables. It was a scene.” She says the party was promoted on Snapchat. Hundreds of people paid each to get in. Dale says her daughter was jumped and knocked unconscious by five girls who were stealing party-goers cell phones. Dale says at least two people brandished handguns. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — New data released by the San Diego County Office of Education show three-fourths of all K-12 students in the County are now studying online and experts believe that number will increase by the start of the new year.Poway parent, Caroline Epps, told her three children recently that they would be going back to virtual learning."I could tell they were disappointed," Epps said. "It's been nice having them there even though it's been such a short time. It's going to be a little difficult having them at home the whole day again."Poway Unified is one of the few school districts that are still offering modified in-person instruction, only to elementary students. But earlier this week, the district announced they would be recommending all students to revert to distance learning after winter break."My oldest will have the most difficult time with that because her assignments are more complex," Epps said.The decision comes after another surge in COVID-19 cases. Bob Mueller with the County Office of Education says 75% of K-12 students are now learning remotely, up from 68% last month."We are seeing the impact of gatherings for Thanksgiving," Mueller said. "It's likely that we will see the surge deepen for a time as we feel the impact of gatherings for the December holidays."School staff getting sick or having to quarantine are resulting in a serious staffing shortage."We are seeing unprecedented demand for substitutes," Mueller said. We need more people to work in those roles than we've ever needed before."Epps says while it is not ideal, she understands the situation. So she and her children will have to adapt and overcome."I don't think anyone wants the school year to be the way it has been," Epps said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mostra Coffee, the San Diego-based coffee company that recently won the award for Best Roaster in the U.S., has opened its second brick-and-mortar store.The move is a risk, as many small businesses had to close or scale back during the coronavirus pandemic."Being an entrepreneur, it's just something that you pretty much fight for, and you are you're kind of programmed to just take a leap off the cliff even though you don't know what's happening," said Jelynn Malone, one of Mostra's co-owners.The new location is in 4S Ranch, an area of town that asked Mostra to move in. A petition in 2019 calling for the new location got more than 1,500 signatures."It was something that the community rallied for, and we felt that the community deserved it," said Malone. "So we just piecemeal this thing and slowly worked our way through to the point where we can actually open."But Malone admits it was scary taking that kind of risk during the Pandemic."Being a small business with over 20 employees, including my own family, it was very troubling and scary," she said.The company went through layoffs in the spring, and work on the new location slowed to a crawl. To keep the business going, Mostra built a website and app to allow for curbside pick-up and online ordering.Now that the new 4S Ranch location is open, Malone and her co-owners say the struggle has made their success more enjoyable."I'm so happy we made this decision, and I'm so happy with how the shop turned out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police believe the deaths in Otay Mesa Sunday of an elderly man and woman may be a murder-suicide.Police have identified the suspect and victim in the incident as James 82-year-old Rafferty and 83-year-old Kazuko Rafferty. Police believe James shot Kazuko several times and then used the same gun to take his own life. Dispatchers received a call about 10:30 a.m. requesting a welfare check on a married couple who lived at the Ocean Bluffs Mobile Home Park on Del Sol Blvd.Officers responded to the home and received no answer when they knocked on the door and made several phone calls.
