CLAIREMONT, Calif. (KGTV) -- A warning for the next time you drop a piece of mail in a postal collection box: a local thief may be getting creative to grab your mail.Around 7 pm Monday, along Mt. Everest Blvd, Dennis Fipps walked a few blocks from his home and dropped off a driver's license renewal in the blue box.The next morning, Fipps says a neighbor showed up at this door with his empty envelope. In all, he believes that neighbor found torn mail strewn in the gutter for 8 to 10 neighbors. "I thought 'Omigosh! The check,'" said Fipps. The check was made out to the DMV for . In the past several years, 10news has reported on stolen checks being washed: a chemical solution dissolving away the ink, allowing a thief to fill in the blanks. Fipps called his bank and stopped the check, then headed to the post office. "Their response was that the box had been fished," said Fipps. In that fishy tactic, the fishing line is often a simple string, connected to a rodent glue trap, allowing the thief to grab onto envelopes and pull them out of the collection box. "It's dastardly. I'll say that much," said Fipps. Postal officials say 'fishing' is not common, but it does happen in the area. A spokesperson tells 10news almost all the local boxes have anti-fishing security measures, and they will now be looking at this collection box to see what went wrong. "There's an expectation of security and that has kind of been shattered," said Fipps. 1558
Companies are using some pretty sneaky tactics to make you think you're getting more than you actually are when it comes to buying things like cosmetics.But are they breaking rules?U.S. consumers spent billion in 2017 on cosmetic products. Makeup enthusiast Alex Langer says she’s never really paid close attention to the amount of product inside the fancy cosmetic bottles."Unless you're a mathematician, you don't know what that really is," says Langer.The NOW’s investigative team looked at some popular brands and found some tricky packaging that seems misleading. (Disclaimer: we are not mathematicians)"I think that there is an ethical issue with trying to convey that there is more in that package than there really is," says marketing expert Darrin Duber-Smith.The NOW looked at two different oils from Olay products. One actually had more product than the other. The company is using what marketers refer to as "downsizing," which started a decade ago."You can make your package thicker, and that way it holds less stuff,” explains Duber-Smith. “You can put a false bottom or a thicker bottom at the bottom…you can fill it, not all the way to the top."Another product from e.l.f. looked as if it was full of product, but when you start unscrewing things and pulling if apart, you learn quickly that looks are very deceiving."Competitors have to kind of have larger packages in order to convey the perception that there's more and more product in there," explains Duber-Smith.Companies, however, cannot lie about the amount on the product’s label. The companies are required to be precise about what’s included on labels and the product amount is included."We have labeling requirements,” explains Duber-Smith. “We have regulatory agencies that do oversee these things."Packaging can change your perception dramatically. Each bottle of foundation we looked at differed in design, but the amount in the bottles were the same."I would agree completely that it's very misleading to consumers,” Duber-Smith says. “And my feeling is that if your intent is to deceive you have an ethical issue."So before you purchase your next beauty product, pay attention and make sure you are checking the labels; don't be deceived by pretty packaging. 2264

Cleveland police have released surveillance footage of a gangland-style drive-by shooting from February in which small children were nearly gunned down in the crossfire.The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. at a convenience store located in Cleveland, on Feb. 19.According to the footage, there was a gunfight in the parking lot. Two parked SUVs in front of the store were targeted in the drive-by. Camera footage of the shooting shows three cars pull into the parking lot and the occupants inside open fire on the two vehicles. A man and two children who just exited the store were mere feet from where the bullets ricocheted off the building's walls. 681

(KGTV) -- A man was tackled in the middle of a Southern California Target store for reportedly taking pictures up women's skirts.According to Cypress Police, officers were notified that the man, later identified as Jorge Ibarra, 29, was taking pictures targeting women wearing skirts.The suspect then fled from the scene after being tackled to the ground by one of the women’s father. Investigators learned that Ibarra committed the same crime at a Target in a different city.RELATED: Staff member at facility for migrant children accused of touching minor, police saySeveral days later, officers found and arrested Ibarra for invasion of privacy. COVID-19 is currently the leading cause of death in the United States, according to research from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).According to JAMA's research, daily deaths due to COVID-19 in the U.S. increased from 826 to 2,430 between Nov. 1 and Dec. 13. The 2,430 deaths linked to the virus now outpace heart disease (an average of 1,700 deaths a day) and cancer (1,600 deaths per day) — typically the two leading causes of death in the country.Between March and October, COVID-19 ranked as the third-leading cause of death in the U.S., trailing only heart disease and cancer. However, the spread of the virus has been largely unchecked in recent months, as colder winter months have moved gatherings indoors, where the virus is more likely to spread.COVID-19 was also the nation's leading cause of death in the springtime, when JAMA reports that about 2,900 people were dying each day from the virus."The failure of the public and its leaders to take adequate steps to prevent viral transmission has made the nation more vulnerable, allowing COVID-19 to become the leading cause of death in the United States, particularly among those aged 35 years or older," the Journal stated in its report. "Much of this escalation was preventable, as is true for many deaths to come."JAMA's study was published a day after the Journal reported that COVID-19 has appeared to be much more deadly to young people than initially thought. Between March and July, more than 76,000 people aged between 25 to 44 died in the U.S. — about 12,000 more than in a typical year. JAMA attributed the excess mortality among young people to the virus and added that COVID-19 deaths in the age group outpaced unintentional opioid deaths in some regions."In fact, July appears to have been the deadliest month among this age group in modern American history. Over the past 20 years, an average of 11,000 young American adults died each July.
