You could say Sindy Bregman and Allison Young are modern day golden girls. Just like Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia from the hit show The Golden Girls, Bregman and Young live together, all while experiencing life in their golden years. As of three months ago, Bregman and Young was perfect strangers. Bregman had recently lost a partner, and Young’s apartment building was being torn down.“So then I thought, well, I’ll go back to what I was doing in college when I was a young, starving actress, and thought well, I’ll get a roommate!” Young says. For Bregman, it was her first time ever pursuing a roommate. But it made perfect sense. Not only did a roommate help financially and emotionally, it also helped with safety, says Bregman. Having a roommate also provided companionship. According to AARP, one-third of Americans over the age of 45 say they're lonely. That’s why non-profits like Senior Homeshares--where the two friends found each other--are growing. "What you do is you sign up either as a home seeker or homeowner, [and] you fill out a profile,” explains Stephanie Heacox, creator of SeniorHomeshares.org. Heacox says the process is similar to filling out a dating profile. Users list their preferences, including what they’re looking for in a housemate. Bregman’s profile stated she was "neat, clean and responsible" and looking for the same to share her apartment. “The first person I pulled up was Sindy, and her introduction was just perfect for me,” recalls Young.The new friends and roommates are also fans of The Golden Girls, with Young calling herself a Blanche. “I think I’m more like a Dorothy,” replies Bregman. However, the pair says there’s another sitcom that may be even more appropriate to describe them. "Even though we might be a little bit like The Odd Couple,” Bregman says, laughing. “Like yanno, Oscar and Felix. We make it work." 1890

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A cyclist says he narrowly escaped injury after finding a camouflaged 'booby trap' on a popular trail along Lake Hodges.Steven Lennox made the discovery minutes into his bike ride Friday afternoon on a trail in the San Dieguito River Park. He was taking photos that afternoon, so he was going slower than normal and stopped when he saw the shadow on the ground."It was a shadow line all the way across. I looked up from there and I saw the ivy," said Lennox.But the ivy wasn't the only thing stretched across the trail. "As I got closer, I saw the rusty wire," said Lennox.In several photos he took, the ivy is seen intertwined with barbed wire and tied to a tree."Three to four loops ... had to weave it though. Somebody spent some time putting it together," said Lennox.The barbed wire appeared to be pulled from an old fence and camouflaged with a nearby vine."When you're being deceptive and hiding something, that's being cruel," said Lennox.The wire was strewn across at a height that would hit a cyclist in the chest or neck area."I don't think someone would have enough speed to cut their head off, but somebody could snap a neck," said Lennox.The discovery was made along a trail popular with cyclists, hikers and horseback riders. Rangers didn't find any similar hazards on the trail and tell us there haven't been any similar incidents in the past. Lennox says he has seen large rocks left on the trail, possibly to slow down cyclists. 1474

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a man was found dead in a car in San Diego's Southcrest neighborhood Wednesday morning. According to police, the man's body was found in the driver's seat of the vehicle on the 4000 block of Boston Avenue just before noon. Police say the victim had a wound on his head. At this time, police say they're searching for three teenage boys seen leaving the scene around the time the victim was found dead.Both 40th and 41st Street from Newton Avenue to Boston Avenue and the 4000 block of Boston Avenue, including the North Alley and Recreation Center foot path were closed throughout the day Wednesday as police investigated. The circumstances surrounding the death are unclear at this time. The man’s identity also hasn’t been released.  A Florida man has been charged with 144 counts related to cruelty to animals.The State Attorney's Office has charged 51-year-old Robert David Starkweather after investigators found what 77 cows, 48 calves, and 2 donkeys found on his Hendry County farm.Photos taken by the local Sheriff's Office showed animals as bags of bones."That's got to be the most horrific fate, worst way to go," local animal rescuer Carey Kendzior said. "These are massive animals and it would take months to let it get to that point of cruelty and neglect. There's no excuse."Rescuers came too late for some. There were 13 animals found dead upon arrival."I don't care who you are. No reason for you to be in charge of animals," Kendzior said.The Hendry County Sheriff's Office investigated the case with assistance from both the Lee County Sheriff's Office and the Collier County Sheriff's Office. The animals were sized and were taken from the property and moved to another location.One calf died and five had to be euthanized due to their poor health conditions after being looked at by a veterinarian.Dr. Laura Braun is a vet in Fort Myers. Braun was disturbed when she saw the photos. "That's not how cattle are supposed to look, not even close," she said.Starkweather will be arraigned on May 17. 1302
