"There is a great amount of opportunity right now to snag a good deal on an apartment in Manhattan."The latest report from realtor Douglass Elliman found that the median price of a Manhattan apartment last month was ,100, down from ,500 last October.The savings are even steeper for smaller apartments."We've seen a 19% decrease in the prices of studios," Beauchamp said.Landlords are hoping to lure renters back to Manhattan after thousands moved out during the peak of the pandemic."The vacancy rate, last month I think was just under 6% and this month, we're over 6%," Beauchamp said.That adds up to 16,000 empty apartments in Manhattan, and the greatest share of those vacant apartments are downtown."I saw some incredible deals down in Tribeca over the summer that are still persisting right now," Beauchamp said.More than 5,000 new leases were signed in Manhattan last month, up 12% after a September slump.Many renters are finding more room across the East River."I think there is stronger demand in Brooklyn than the rest of the city," real estate agent Akil Rossi said.The Elliman report found Brooklyn leases surged in October to the second-highest October total in 12 years. Rossi has seen rents come down slightly in neighborhoods like Williamsburg and Clinton Hill."You get a lot more space," she said. New mandates for stores, cities and regions require many of us to wear masks in public, but researchers say it's important to treat them like a biohazard.Professor and Department Chair of Community, Environment and Policy at the University of Arizona Public Health College Kelly Reynolds said, while in public, the virus can get on the front of the mask and live on it for several days."By design, the mask could really be contaminated, so we recommend that people think of their masks as a biohazard," Reynolds said.The virus can live on surgical and N95 masks for up to seven days. Normally, they would be thrown out after one use, but a shortage in Personal Protective Equipment prevents that."You can’t just throw them in the washer machine -- that would destroy their fibers," Reynolds said. "For those (N95 and surgical), the best recommendation is to let the natural course of the virus dying off to run its course, so the recommendation is to take those masks and put them in a paper bag and wait seven days before you use them again."More commonly though, she said people in the community are wearing homemade, cloth masks, which can hold the virus for two days.She said one advantage in Arizona to clean those is the summer heat, which means leaving it in a car for at least 20 minutes."When it is 110 outside, in no time our cars will get really hot, so the coronavirus can survive in our cars for 20 minutes in up to 130 degrees and five minutes at 150 degrees, so that can be a very effective tool for decontaminating our masks," Reynolds said.She recommends removing the masks from the elastic around the ears using your pinkies. She said this is because those are the fingers you're least likely to use touching your face.After that, make sure to put it in a central location and sanitize or wash your hands."If you think about why we are wearing the mask in the first place, it is to prevent our exposure," Reynolds said. NEW YORK — David Dinkins, the first Black mayor of New York City, died Monday at the age of 93.Dinkins was elected in 1989 and served as mayor from 1990 to 1993, making him the first and only Black man to serve as the city's mayor.He was born in 1927 in Trenton, New Jersey. He was drafted, served as a Marine and later graduated from Howard University and Brooklyn Law School. He served in the state assembly before later becoming president of the board of elections, a city clerk and Manhattan borough president.Dinkins defeated longtime incumbent Mayor Ed Koch in the Democratic primary in 1989 and later beat Rudy Giuliani on his path to City Hall.In his inaugural address, he vowed to be "mayor of all the people of New York" and declared, "we are all foot soldiers on the march to freedom."Dinkins was known for his reserved public demeanor and civility.He was an American voice in favor of anti-apartheid sanctions, and his policies as mayor reflected his support for South Africa.He also created the office of Special Commissioner of Investigations for schools, built a system of after hour youth centers called Beacon Schools, and worked to create an all civilian police complaint review board.According to a city biography, Dinkins was sharply criticized for his handling of racial strife in Crown Heights, a boycott of Korean Grocers in Brooklyn and civil unrest in Washington Heights. He also dealt with sluggish economic growth.Giuliani succeeded Dinkins in 1993 after one term in office.After leaving City Hall, Dinkins remained active in city politics and taught public affairs at Columbia University.The NYPD said initial indications were that he died of natural causes.Dinkins was married to his wife Joyce for more than 65 years, and together they had two children.Joyce Dinkins died in October. NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. Justice Department is asking to take over President Donald Trump’s defense in a defamation lawsuit from a writer who accused him of rape. Federal lawyers also asked a court Tuesday to allow a move that could put the American people on the hook for any money E. Jean Carroll might be awarded. The Justice Department lawyers argue that Trump was “acting within the scope of his office” when he denied Carroll’s allegations last year that he raped her in a New York luxury department store in the mid-1990s.She says his comments besmirched her character and harmed her career.The filing complicates, at least for the moment, Carroll’s efforts to get a DNA sample from the president as potential evidence and to have him answer questions under oath.It comes amid concerns that Attorney General William Barr has gone out of his way to intervene in other legal cases involving Trump or his allies.
