BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has called for improving the urban living conditions for migrant workers who left their rural hometowns and are significantly contributing to the country's urbanization.Wen made the his remarks at the start of the three-day holiday for the Chinese traditional Dragon Boat Festival on Monday during his visit to a local community and a construction site on Beijing's line 6 subway.Wen noted that government officials, as well as all members of society, should treat young migrant workers as their own children, adding that the migrant workers' contribution to the growth of the country's wealth and the building of urban skyscrapers should be respected, Wen said when meeting migrant workers at the subway construction site.Additionally, Wen said that the government should work to resolve problems for migrant workers, such as marriage, housing and taking care of their children, and help them adapt to living in the cities where they are working.Wen also proposed that local government and subway construction companies should increase recreational activities, such as sports games and Karaoke, for migrant workers to enjoy during their free time in the city.At the same time, he encouraged young migrant workers to learn more practical skills and read more books so their leisure time would not be boring.Further, the premier vowed to improve construction in rural areas by building more hospitals, schools and other public facilities so that migrant workers would have fewer worries in their hometowns.Wen also visited a local children's welfare home where he met some 558 orphans. BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales, the main gauge of consumer spending in the world's fastest-growing economy, rose 18.7 percent year on year to 1.25 trillion yuan (183 billion U.S. dollars) in May, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced Friday.The growth rate was 3.5 percentage points higher than the same period last year and 0.2 percentage points higher than April's, said NBS spokesman Sheng Laiyun.Urban consumption hit 1.08 trillion yuan in May, up 19.1 percent year on year, while rural residents spent 163.7 billion yuan, up 15.8 percent.  A woman walks by a sale advertising poster in Beijing, capital of China, May 11, 2010.In the first five months, total retail sales climbed 18.2 percent to 6.03 trillion yuan. BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) - China's economy is unlikely to see a "double dip" in the second half of this year, and the economic growth for the remaining six months is expected to surpass 9 percent, according to a Bank of Communications report released Saturday.China's economic growth will slow down in the next half year, while consumer prices would fall from its peak, said the nation's fifth largest commercial bank in a report on the outlook of China's economy for the second half of 2010"For China, it is never a recession unless the economic growth drops below 7 percent," said Lian Ping, chief economist with the Shanghai-based bank.The growth is sustainable and healthy for the economy as the growth rate stays around 9 percent, he said.China's exports, a major force driving the economic growth, would continue to rebound in the second half, and the growth for the entire year would stay above 20 percent, according to the report.For the latter half of 2010 consumption is to grow by 18.5 percent from a year ago while investment growth will drop steadily to about 21 percent due to government support to the private sector and strategic emerging industries, it said.Increasing labor costs, resources and food prices is expected to push up China's consumer prices, but the growth would be restrained in the second half due to the slowing money supply and eased imported inflationary pressures, it said.China's gross domestic product (GDP) expanded 11.1 percent in the first six months of this year from one year earlier, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed.China's consumer price index stood at 2.6 percent in the first half of 2010, according to the NBS, while retail sales and fixed asset investments grew 18.2 percent and 25 percent year on year, respectively.China would maintain a stable monetary policy for the rest of the year since the global economic condition is still complicated, and an interest rate hike is unlikely to be seen, said the report.The bank estimated that new loans for the entire year would stand between 7 to 8 trillion yuan (1.03 trillion to 1.18 trillion U.S. dollars).The bank also forecasted in the report that the Chinese government would remain tough with the property sector, but there is little possibility for additional curbs on the market. Property investment would largely fall, but there will not be a significant decline in property prices.Lian suggested that the Chinese government pay attention to the possible cumulative effect of policies on the economy and keep market liquidity at a reasonable level.
