SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The community of Barrio Logan welcomed residents to shop in the streets after months of coronavirus’ impact. Saturday, Aug. 4, the “Walk the Block” event debuted. Local businesses got permits to move service outdoors to the sidewalk, and the event celebrated the community’s resurgence of business with food, specialty items and music.Business owners like Stephanie, who runs Dreamers and Hustlers Company, a clothing shop with items branded toward the namesake, said the past few months have been hard, but she’s confident Barrio Logan shops will bounce back.“Even during these times we figure out ways we can pick ourselves up and get going again,” she said.Edgar Flores said his shop, Maxa Market, sells products made by local small businesses and entrepreneurs. He’s been able to continue with online sales but said he’s excited to be restocking his storefront and welcoming back in-person customers.“It’s all about being a community, all the people getting together doing this, doing the walkabout,” he said.The Walk the Block event will occur every Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. on Logan Ave. between Chicano Park and 26th St. Masks and social distancing are required. 1200

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The co-founder and CEO of the Super Dentists said that during the current COVID-19 pandemic, patients have been hesitant to get dental work done."The American Dental Association did a survey, and about 75 to 80 percent of the patients across the country feel comfortable about going back to the dentist. About 15 percent want a vaccine before they go back,” said Dr. Kami Hoss.And while he understands the precautions people are making, Hoss said a recent study indicates dentist offices have shown to be safe."There have been zero cases of COVID related to any dentist offices,” Hoss said.And to further help ease the minds of dental patients, Hoss has just written a book titled, "If Your Mouth Could Talk.""I wanted to know what keeps parents up at night and what their worries are. I did some research, and I had 300 pages of stats on what keeps parents up at night. When I read them, I realized that so many of them could be related back to their mouths, and their kids mouths. So, I decided to write a book about it,” Hoss told ABC 10News.He's a dentist and an author, but that is not all. Hoss has a love of music, so he decided to write and compose songs for the Super Dentists. He said his musical inspiration is the rock band KISS."I think KISS made just like beautiful melodies you know with all the great performances they had at their concerts,” said Hoss.It may sound a bit strange a dentist composing music, but he said it has a purpose in the world of the Super Dentists."We do all of these things with characters, music, and the movies so the kids associate something positive to their oral health,” Hoss said. 1655

Researchers estimate Americans will spend more than 0 billion in retail this year, which means they need to staff seasonal workers ahead of the shopping rush. Macy’s announced they are looking for 80,000 seasonal workers. The Gap Company will hire 65,000 people. Target plans to add 120,000 seasonal team members this year, up 20% from last year. In San Diego County alone, Target plans to add 1,200 people to their staff this season. “I’m going full time at SDSU, and I knew that I was definitely looking for some work,” Elizabeth Gonzalez said. 10News Gonzalez at the Mission Valley Target’s hiring fair Saturday morning. She is hoping to spend her winter break as a Target sales associate.“I just needed some extra cash just to pay the bills,” Gonzalez said. She said she needed the cash to continue paying for college, as she studies to become a Physician’s assistant. “I thought Target would be a great opportunity because I love shopping here,” Gonzalez said. Companies like Target are offering seasonal hiring incentives to those who already love their stores. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The ACLU is threatening to sue ICE over a policy that forbids detention center volunteers from speaking with the press.Souls Offering Loving and Compassionate Ears, also known as SOLACE, is not allowed to help at the Otay Mesa Detention Center until they sign a form promising not to speak with the media.In August, ICE discovered SOLACE wasn’t in compliance with their protocol before asking the group to resubmit the paperwork for their volunteers.ICE says the code of ethics is in place for the safety of the detainees. “These are often folks who don't have any family or friends in the United States so even if they could write or call they don't have anyone to connect with,” said Angela Fujii, a social justice coordinator with the First Unitarian Universalist.SOLACE volunteers are ready to help, but they want to make sure they can share with others about the place where things are kept pretty tight.SOLACE was also briefly barred from visiting during the Obama Administration but the compromise was met.Other groups are providing detainees with services, but SOLACE was the only one allowed to regularly visit. 1148

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man who was armed with a gun when he beat, choked and raped two women in 2016 on consecutive nights was sentenced Tuesday.Jeremiah Ira Williams, 26, was sentenced to 100 years to life, plus 86 year, in state prison after being convicted on May 1 of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, burglary and making a criminal threat.Deputy District Attorney Trisha Amador told jurors that Williams followed the first victim from a parking structure to her apartment on August 13 of 2016.Jane Doe 1 was afraid when Williams asked her "Where's your husband?" as she approached her front door, the prosecutor said.Williams then knocked her down, robbed her at gunpoint and choked her, Amador said. Once inside, Williams beat the victim before raping her and forcing her to take a shower before he left.The following day, Williams beat and raped a woman working as a prostitute after meeting up with her at a motel in Grantville.Williams got on the bed and asked Jane Doe 2, "Do you want to know what it feels like to die?" He then choked the victim until "she saw stars," then raped and sodomized her, according to Amador, who said the woman was so terrified that she broke a window and jumped through it to get away.Williams’ attorney, Deputy Public Defender Thomas Bahr, told the jury that police had a feeling the two rapes were connected and jumped to conclusions.Bahr alleged that Jane Doe 2 lied throughout the investigation, arguing that her story had inconsistencies.The defense attorney alleged that Jane Doe 2 asked a detective “Can I Sue him (Williams) for beating my (expletive.)” 1616
