(KGTV) - Neighbors are fearful and outraged at the idea a sexual predator could move in next door after running into a detective investigating the neighborhood.Tucked away in Alpine Heights is a quiet sprawling neighborhood with multiple cul-de-sacs."Most people don't even know we're here," three decade resident Gerry Brewster said.David Csik and his wife Katie moved in two years ago and describe the area as a kid's dream, filled with block parties, and get-togethers around the BBQ or the pool. They have two kids, a toddler son, and 6-month old baby girl."We moved to Alpine for the community and to send our children to the schools out here; it's all we've ever wanted," Katie said.December 14th, they say a neighbor approached someone walking around a vacant property next door and found out she was an investigator for the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Task Force (SAFE). "They're writing what they call a factual site assessment which they submit to the courts and they're looking to place a sexually violent predator right down the street," David said they were shocked. Katie was ready to get going, "my initial thought was we have to move."The neighborhood jumped into action, writing stacks of concerned letters to their representatives and investigators with the SAFE Task Force.Supervisor Dianne Jacob responded to their emails, saying in part, "At this time, the County has not been made aware of any recommendation to place a SVP at this location. When a SVP is being proposed for conditional release from a state hospital, a public notification is provided by law enforcement and a court hearing takes place before a SVP is placed in the community. I have consistently stood with the community in opposition and will continue to oppose the release of any SVP into our neighborhoods."She said in the email she also contacted the Attorney General and is waiting to hear back.The neighbors did not wait. They created a map showing dozens of children who either live in the vicinity or visit their grandparents daily. After sending the letters, and after SAFE conducted their investigation, the District Attorney did not take this address to court as a possibility for a reformed sexual predator.It was a relief to parents. "I would never have slept at night knowing someone like that was around here," Katie said.While this particular case was thrown out, neighbors want a secure future."What we want to see is this property off the map out of their database," David said.The San Diego District Attorney's website says, "The Department of State Hospitals reviews all possible housing locations within the county and recommends a specific placement to the court." The department states, "Staff examines existing searches for properties that were previously identified. Such information is used only as a starting point. Staff uses many resources to find potential properties for rent including review of newspaper and Craigslist advertisements; visiting local real estate offices and even, driving through neighborhoods in search of "For Rent" signs."10News reached out to the department to see if this house has been removed from the database or how that could happen, and they said they would get back to us Friday. 3259

Airbnb announced new rules for New Year's Eve to prevent parties and large gatherings at its properties amid a surge in coronavirus cases.The vacation rental company released its plan on Thursday to limit rentals in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Australia, France, and Spain.The new measures state that Airbnb would require guests who don't have a positive review history to book a minimum of two nights for any stay, including Dec. 31. Any guests with reservations on Dec. 31 must swear that they will not throw a party under threat of legal charges.The company said that guests who have a history of positive reviews on Airbnb would not be subject to this restriction.The company said it would allow already-booked one-night reservations to continue as planned since their "data has historically shown that one-night New Year’s Eve bookings made prior to now very rarely lead to unauthorized parties." 936

He analyzes just how we communicate. These days, a lot of our conversing is over the internet. As the election inches closer, Mollica and his students are watching and discussing what's happening on social media platforms.“It’s not that much different but the stakes are higher, not from the perspective of voting but as in what these socia lnetworks are trying to do or not do it the wake of what happened in 2016,” Mollica said.Take Facebook for instance. The social site has been under scrutiny and they know it. Mark Zuckerberg posted from his own account about what changes the site is making, including informational posts about voting and how and where to vote. Facebook will block new political ads in the final week before the election, and they say they'll be working with officials to remove misinformation about voting.There are also rules against COVID-19 threats surrounding voting.Twitter is also taking a stand. Mollica says you might see something trending but if there's a problematic post, the original content will likely be pulled.“We’re not gonna allow this content to continue is something is shared by Joe Biden or Donald Trump or any political party,” Mollica said. “They’re going to make sure it’s taken down because they want to mitigate the negative news or the false news that comes out from certain accounts.”Twitter says it has election teams focusing on integrity, and the company is launching initiatives to help users find original sources of information. You'll also be able to report misleading information.“This isn’t censorship,” Mollica said. “This is something where social networks are saying, ‘Look, we understand we’re a news cycle.’ At least from Twitter’s perspective, they share news. They want to be a place where people get news. McLaughlin says, however, it doesn't mean that you can't find it on other search platforms.“Use a different search engine,” McLaughlin said. “There is Bing, DuckDuckGo, a few others that are meant to be less persuasive, less filtered that will give you exactly what you search for versus what they want you to see or what they think you want.”“So, Google trying to mitigate it somehow is a great start but you think about it’s basically putting a small cork in a huge hole and it’s still leaking and you can’t really stop it,” Mollica said.Most experts would agree it’s unfortunate that it has come to this.“We’ve gotten to a place now where misinformation does spread like wildfire on social media. People will sensationalize to get likes to get people to follow them and really doing the research to vet whether something is true or not is very important,” Mollica said.He says that's true whether you're buying a car, or voting.
