SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man was sentenced Friday to more than six years in prison for operating a million Ponzi scheme that caused investors to lose more than million.In addition to the 75-month sentence, Jonny Ngo, former president and CEO of NL Technology, LLC, was ordered to pay nearly million in restitution for bilking investors out of money he alleged would be used to fund wholesale purchase orders of smartphone screens and other electronic goods.Prosecutors said the funds were actually spent on personal expenses, such as "a home, luxury cars and gambling."Ngo, 34, told investors that NL Technology was supplying smartphone screens to several buyers, including two that each ordered about million worth of NL Technology products, and prepared false financial and bank statements to back up his claims, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Ngo pleaded guilty to a mail fraud charge last year."Ngo swindled and conned innocent investors out of their hard-earned money to support his lavish lifestyle," FBI Special Agent in Charge Suzanne Turner said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A veteran San Diego fire captain pleaded guilty Wednesday to a felony domestic violence charge for injuring his girlfriend during an argument.Steven Michaels, 54, faces up to a year in jail when he is sentenced Feb. 7.As part of his plea agreement, Michaels -- a 30-year firefighter with San Diego Fire-Rescue -- will be on probation for three years, said Deputy District Attorney Stephen Marquardt.Judge Timothy Walsh also ordered the defendant to have no contact with the victim, Marquardt said.RELATED: Trial begins for man accused of stabbing two San Diego firefightersAt his arraignment in August, a prosecutor said Stevens shoved his girlfriend against a wall on July 21 and refused to let her use a cell phone to call for help after she was injured.Michaels has been arrested twice in the past for alleged domestic violence -- once in 2006 and again in December 2015.His run-ins with law enforcement were brought up during the trial of a man who stabbed two San Diego firefighters at an East Village trolley stop in June 2015.Defense attorney Gretchen von Helms didn't immediately comment on how Stevens' felony guilty plea will affect his job status. 1189

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - In a first for San Diego County elections, the polls for the Nov. 3 Presidential General Election will open for four days, starting today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.In light of COVID-19, voters were encouraged to vote from home using their mail ballot. This close to the election, voters are advised to not mail in ballots, as they may not reach the registrar in time.For those who want to vote in person, they can vote early at their assigned polling place from Saturday, Oct. 31 through Monday, Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.On Thursday, the registrar reported nearly half of the county's 1.95 million registered voters had already cast their ballots, more than double the number received by that point in 2016.More than 937,000 ballots had been received as of Thursday. At this point in the 2016 presidential election, the registrar had received 409,702 ballots.Even so, due to the pandemic and a predicted high voter turnout, the registrar's office is continuing to urge voters to avoid long lines and crowded polling places by voting before Election Day itself.Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one.There are fewer polling places than in past elections, and the location of some polls have changed so voters are encouraged to check the back of their sample ballot and voter information pamphlet before heading out to vote this weekend.Voters casting ballots in person are instructed to bring a face mask and plan to maintain social distance. ``We encourage voters to act early and make voting decisions from the comfort and safety of their home,'' Vu said. ``Mark your ballot, sign, seal and return your mail ballot to a trusted source. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Metropolitan Transit System trolley in San Ysidro, police said Friday.The crash happened shortly before 11:40 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Beyer Boulevard and Smythe Avenue, San Diego police Sgt. Michael Stirk said. The intersection is just northeast of the Beyer Boulevard Trolley Station.The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, Stirk said. No details about the victim were immediately available.Officers from the San Diego Police Department's traffic division were investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash. 608
