Why is a guitar-slinging young cowboy all over the internet Tuesday? He’s singing about reducing methane, not normally a topic for country western music. It’s an ad touting new research and new burgers from Burger King.Livestock is responsible for about 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Those emissions are in the form of burps and farts as cows and other animals digest their food.Burger King partnered with scientists in the U.S. and Mexico to test different remedies humans have used for centuries to calm tummies, including chamomile, baking soda, and lemongrass.What they found is adding lemongrass can reduce that animal’s methane emissions by a third. Roughly 100 grams (about half a cup) of dried leaves is added to the cows’ daily feed.The research was done in partnership with U.C. Davis in Northern California and Autonomous University of the State of Mexico in Toluca, Mexico. The findings are being made available to everyone, and Burger King is pledging to continue to work with scientists as part of their beef sustainability strategy.Starting Tuesday, select Burger King locations in Miami, New York, Austin, Portland and Los Angeles will offer the Reduced Methane Emissions Beef Whopper sandwich, made with beef from cows eating the lemongrass diet. 1290
While many have people lost their jobs over the past few months, for some people, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a scenario that made it easier for them to find work. Lashaunda Garner is one of those people.“In my situation I was out of work for 16 years,” said Garner.After nearly two decades, Garner found a work-from-home job at the start of the pandemic.“As soon as I got the job, I was like ‘oh my gosh, I can do something past my disability,’” she added.Garner suffers from severe PTSD and anxiety, which makes it difficult to work in a traditional work environment.“In my case, there are certain sounds, certain smells and things that trigger your depression and when I am at home, I can limit those things,” said Garner.While work-from-home options were previously limited. During forced business closures and stay at home orders, the U.S. saw a surge in work-from-home jobs, especially call center positions.“The pandemic struck, and all of the call centers had to send their agents home. This was worldwide. This was something that never happened before,” said Alan Hubbard. “Some of the agents that were sent home in India, the Philippines and China didn’t have the physical infrastructure in order to do those jobs.”Hubbard is with the National Telecommuting Institute (NTI), which helps people with disabilities work from home. In Garner’s case, it had already helped her setup a home office and everything needed to work from home when the surge happened.“You hear people say, ‘you aren’t your job’ right, but for a lot of people, that is how they identify themselves,” said Hubbard. “That they are working, that they are productive. That is the opportunity that we try to provide.”Garner is just one example out of many people with disabilities who have been able to find work-from-home jobs and thrive in that environment over the past few months.Since the beginning of the pandemic, NTI has had a significant increase in companies come to them for help finding workers. They have four times as many available jobs to fill and have actually been able to place nearly 200 people in work-from-home jobs in the last six weeks. When, typically, it places about 50 people a month.“That is what the pandemic has done. It has opened up this opportunity for these folks,” said Hubbard.Hubbard is currently working with a dozen companies looking to hire another 240 people.Lashaunda is thriving in her current role and hoping her story inspires not just other people with disabilities, but the millions looking for work right now.“Do the best you can and fight for what you want,” said Garner. “It may take you, hopefully not 16 years, but you will end up getting it.” 2681
With coronavirus cases ramping up in a number of US states, more and more US governors have issued mandates to wear masks while in public settings.The continued spike in COVID-19 cases has caused several states to close bars and pause plans to reopen some businesses such as movie theaters.While a number of states had previously mandated masks in many public spaces, several more have been added to the list in recent days. Requiring face coverings are largely being seen as a way to avoid reinstituting stay-at-home orders, which most states implemented during the spring.Researchers from the University of Washington say that a projected 33,000 American lives would be saved between June 23 and October 1 if 95% of the population wore masks in public settings.A study in the Lancet found that the use of masks and respirators by those infected with the virus reduced the risk of spreading the infection by 85%. The authors analyzed data that showed that N95 respirators in healthcare settings were up to 96% effective. With California hospitals dealing with an extreme number of patients, nurses are terrified of what’s next.It comes as California hits 2 million infections just 44 days after reaching 1 million. Hospitals in California have been pushed to the brink, and it’s expected to get worse as people travel and gather for Christmas and New Year’s.The state is urgently searching for 3,000 temporary medical workers to meet the demand, focusing on nurses trained in critical care. Hospitals are also confronting the shortage by trying to free up staff any way they can, including postponing certain medical procedures.The state has also temporarily loosened some restrictions. Typically, California requires one nurse for every two ICU patients. Regulators have temporarily relaxed that requirement to one nurse for every three ICU patients.The state has sent more than 600 temporary healthcare workers to hard-hit counties from the National Guard, the California Health Corps, and other partnerships, but officials are still looking for more.State officials have even started reaching out to other countries like Australia and Taiwan to get much-needed medical workers.Elected leaders and health officials across the U.S. are asking people to stay home for the holidays while also trying to show the public that the COVID-19 vaccines trickling out to health care workers and nursing home residents are safe.The Associated Press contributed to this report. 1453
