A rare white tiger has mauled to death its keeper in a zoo in southern Japan, zoo official Takuro Nakazako told CNN.Police are investigating the incident after 40-year old Akira Furusho was found unconscious and covered in blood in the tiger enclosure at the Hirakawa Zoo, Kagoshima on Monday. The tiger named "Riku," one of four at the zoo, was tranquilized after the attack but was not put down because Furusho's family did not want it killed.White tigers are a genetic variant of the more common orange-and-black Bengal tiger but they have black stripes and white fur.The zoo was open as normal on Tuesday but the white tiger observation zone was restricted "as police continued to investigate the case," AFP reported.Riku, who was born at the zoo, is about 1.8 meters in length and weigh 374 pounds, AFP said. 820

A university official said that Jerry Falwell Jr. has resigned as president of Liberty University Monday, according to media reports. But Falwell told a TV station in Virginia that he has not agreed to resign, and reports of his resignation are "completely false."Falwell was already on a leave of absence from the evangelical Lynchburg, Va school his father founded following a series of personal issues.Over the weekend, Falwell issued a lengthy statement disclosing the “emotional toll” an affair his wife had with a man was having on him. He says the man, identified by media reports as a former pool attendant and later a business partner of Falwell and his wife, threatened to reveal the relationship “to deliberately embarrass my wife, family, and Liberty University unless we agreed to pay him substantial monies.”In his statement, Falwell said he and his wife met the man she had an affair with during a vacation over eight years ago. The man was working at the hotel where the Falwells stayed, the statement said.“Shortly thereafter, Becki had an inappropriate personal relationship with this person, something in which I was not involved – it was nonetheless very upsetting to learn about,” Falwell said in the statement. He declined further comment when reached Monday.Falwell, an early and ardent supporter of President Donald Trump, has been on an indefinite leave since early August as president and chancellor of Liberty founded by his late father, the Rev. Jerry Falwell Sr. Falwell Jr. has been leading the university since 2007.He stepped down this summer after an uproar sparked by a photo he posted on social media that showed him with his pants unzipped, stomach exposed and arm high around the waist of a woman who was not his wife. Falwell has said the photo was taken at a costume party during a family vacation. 1845

A Nashville doggie day care has filed a lawsuit for million against people who they said have destroyed their reputation. They said online posts in a popular neighborhood Facebook page just weren't true. The Dog Spot in East Nashville filed the lawsuit for libel, fraud and other charges against Jamie Bayer and Bari Rachel Miley Hardin for comments they made on the East Nashville Facebook page starting last month.According to the lawsuit, Bayer posted in part: "...how many dogs have died at The Dog Spot?"  Adding, "I found out two dogs died there. Since then I've heard up to four, and recently even seven."The lawsuit says, among other things, Hardin posted "Lots of dogs have been killed there" and "people can't talk when they've been paid off."The lawsuit from The Dog spot says "These are false statements.""It's not acceptable, its not freedom of speech. you cannot yell fire in a movie theater," said Chad Baker, one of the owners of The Dog Spot. "Just because it's Facebook, doesn't mean you can go on, and say things that are not true, and what's being said about us is not true."There has been at least one dog death at the day care. Rachael Waldrop's Chihuahua "Hall" died after an incident with a larger dog last year. Waldrop sued the daycare last month.Hardin's attorney told Scripps station WTVF in Nashville in a statement, "This lawsuit is just another transparent attempt to silence The Dog Spot's many deeply unhappy customers..." and "The Dog Spot is about to learn a very expensive lesson about free speech, and we look forward to seeing them in court for a short period of time and exposing this ridiculous lawsuit for the sham that it is."This is not the first libel lawsuit The Dog Spot has filed. Last year, they sued after someone posted what they said was a false review on Yelp. 1877

A rare, deadly form of skin cancer is on the rise in the US, and dermatologists are warning people to take extra care of their skin as we head into the summer months.Merkel Cell Carcinoma is found mostly among older patients, but the American Cancer Society says that there are around 1500 cases reported each year."It's devastating because it's usually not picked up until later stages," says Dr. Melanie Palm. She works at Art of Skin in Solana Beach and has treated one case of MCC. "It's more lethal than melanoma. It often has lymph node involvement. It very quickly metastasizes."Research from the ACS says the disease is often associated with a virus. But it seems to affect older people because they have more, prolonged exposure to the sun.Doctors are calling attention to MCC and other forms of skin cancer all throughout May during Skin Cancer Awareness Month. They say it's much easier to prevent Merkel Cell and other cancers than it is to treat them."We live in San Diego. I don't want people to hide from the sun," says Dr. Palm. "But I think being responsible about it is reasonable."That includes wearing sunscreen, protective clothing and regular visits to a dermatologist."It's something I tell all my friends," says Jen Massara, a skin cancer survivor. "Best case scenario is you're fine, you check that box, you're good to go. Worst case scenario, they find something, and you get it taken care of."Self-inspections are also helpful. Dr. Palm tells her patients to keep the "ABCDE's" in mind when looking at moles."A is asymmetery, if it has an odd shape," she says. "B is Border, is the border irregular on the spot. C is color. Is it dark, pink or have several colors. D is diameter. We don't like anything bigger than a pencil head. And E is evolution, has it grown or changed over time."As for sunscreen, Dr. Palm says you want to make sure zinc oxide or titanium dioxide have the highest percentage of all the active ingredients. She says those minerals offer the best protection against the sun's rays. For more information about Merkel Cell Carcinoma, or to see a picture of what it looks like, visit the Mayo Clinic's Website here. 2172
