TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona authorities say a driver escaped injury when his car's windshield was pierced by the trunk of a saguaro cactus during a wreck Wednesday on the outskirts of Tucson.Pima County sheriff's Deputy Daniel Jelineo said the black sports car struck the cactus while crossing a median before ending up on the other side of a road and that the cactus ended up slamming into the car's windshield.The broken-off cactus ended up partially inside the car, with the rest jutting over car's hood.Jelineo said deputies detained the driver for further investigation after observing signs and symptoms of impairment.The driver's identity wasn't released. 671

VALLEY CENTER, Calif. (KGTV) - A major San Diego County horse rescue is under fire for how it handles its horses and donations. The founder of Valley Center’s HiCaliber Horse Rescue is accused, in part, of raising thousands of dollars to rescue horses from slaughter, only to euthanize them by gunshot.The controversial nonprofit was just investigated by county officials and now state officials are looking into it.Michelle Cochran founded and runs the rescue, which has more than 150 horses on its property. She is the self-described “bad girl of rescue”, an edgy, foul-mouthed woman with purple streaks in her hair and facial piercings.Her rescue has more than 50,000 followers on Facebook. It’s where she posts videos of her trips to horse auctions, where she begs for money to buy livestock that she says would otherwise be shipped to slaughterhouses in Mexico. She also posts photos of malnourished and injured horses she says she hopes to rescue.Once donations come in, she and her volunteers and the purchased horses return to the Valley Center property. Some of the horses get rehabilitated. Some get shot.“You’re accused of buying horses that can’t be saved, raising money to save them and then shooting them,” we tell Cochran.She responds, “It costs money to save them. It costs money to diagnose them. It costs money to haul them. It costs money to get their [bodies] removed.”She tells us she knows that some of the horses will be euthanized when she purchases them. She calls them “compassion pulls”, horses she says are too sick to rehabilitate, but deserve a more dignified death than slaughter.Her veterinarian is Dr. William Talbot.He explains, “It’s not a pleasant thing but it is done properly and it’s a humane method of euthanasia.”Cochran adds that gunshot euthanasia is safer and faster than lethal injection, which can cause horses to thrash with fear, jeopardizing horse handlers' safety.10News independently verified that gunshot euthanasia for horses is legal in California. That’s according to a recent investigation that was conducted by a contracted third party, since Cochran used to work for the county as an animal control officer.The nonprofit admits it purchased 17 “compassion pulls” last year. It reports it euthanized another 54 that could not be rehabilitated, but that’s out of a total of more than 400 horses it reportedly rescued. It reports it adopted out more than 150 horses.HiCaliber has not filed its 2016 taxes, citing getting an extension after an administrator had a family emergency. We found the rescue's 2015 IRS records, which showed it totaled more than 0,000 in revenue with only about ,000 going to management expenses. The rescue claims it spends up to ,000 a month on operations costs.Cochran acknowledges that she should reduce the number of horses on the rescue’s property and says she’s working on that with the county.The California Veterinary Medical Board is investigating the nonprofit. (KGTV) - One person is dead after a car crash left a vehicle nearly split in the North County at 1:50 a.m. Saturday morning.The crash occurred on Old Castle Road at Gordon Hill Rd. Police found the vehicle nearly split by a tree. The teenage driver was taken to a nearby hospital but died.Police did not name the driver but said he was 20-years-old from Oceanside.A teen passenger in the vehicle also suffered minor injuries but is expected to recover.Investigators said they believe speed played a factor in the crash and the vehicle may have been racing. 616

VENICE, Fla. -- A Florida pet groomer is under investigation by the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office after a recent video of alleged animal abuse surfaced on social media.The video taken by former Happy Puppy Pet Spa employee Briana Brady, shows another employee putting both hands around a dog's neck and laying it down on the table, leaving Brady to label the action as animal abuse. Brady first witnessed the alleged abuse when another dog left the salon with a broken jaw.“The dog was picked up by the throat, choked, shaken and then his head slammed on the table,” Brady said describing the video.The viral Facebook video has over 250,000 views. Brady worked at the Spa for four weeks prior to posting the video on social media.“It was very hard for me to witness any of that happening," Brady said through tears.The woman in the video who owns the spa, Phyliis Lucca has a different perspective. She claims that her actions weren't abuse, but instead necessary steps for the dog's overall health."If you see the video, I know it looks bad, but that’s not what I’m doing," Lucca explained. “What the dog did was pass out and she faints and what I did was hold her head and shake her. That’s all.”Two weeks prior to the video going public, a puppy named Pumpkin left the spa with a broken jaw and bruises all over his stomach.Lucca claims that Brady was the one responsible."The only one that was in the room alone, with the dog, was Briana.”However, both Brady and Pumpkin's owner, says they believe Lucca was the only one who could've have harmed the dog. The Spa owner hopes to move forward and survive the blow to her business.“If I get through this, I won't have another groomer in the store because nobody can be trusted now.”Brady and Pumpkin's owner say they will be pressing charges against Lucca. 1853
