Attorney General Bill Barr will not recuse himself from overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, the Justice Department announced Monday."Following General Barr's confirmation, senior career ethics officials advised that General Barr should not recuse himself from the Special Counsel's investigation. Consistent with that advice, General Barr has decided not to recuse," according to Justice Department spokesperson Kerri Kupec.Prior to his confirmation, Democrats had raised concerns about a 19-page memo Barr authored in June 2018 detailing why he believed President Donald Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey should not constitute obstruction of justice. Barr vowed to consult with ethics officials but did not make any pledge to recuse himself from the Russia probe. 855

An attorney for the estranged husband of a Connecticut mother who has been missing for more than a month doubled down on his theory that she may have disappeared in a "Gone Girl"-style escape from her life. The family and friends of Jennifer Dulos, 50, dismissed the suggestion that she staged her disappearance in a manner similar to the plot of the popular novel-turned-film.Monday marked one month since the mother of five was last seen in her 2017 Chevrolet Suburban in New Canaan. Friends reported her missing on May 24 after she failed to show up for appointments.Authorities found her car about three miles from the house where she had lived with her five children since splitting from her husband in 2017.Her estranged husband, Fotis Dulos, and his girlfriend pleaded not guilty to charges of evidence tampering and hindering prosecution in her disappearance and were released on bond earlier this month.Authorities said surveillance cameras captured someone resembling Fotis Dulos dumping garbage bags in trash cans that contained items stained with the missing mother's blood.State's Attorney Richard J. Colangelo told a judge that investigators found Fotis Dulos' DNA mixed with her blood in a faucet inside her home. But Fotis Dulos' lawyer offered another explanation for her disappearance, saying that they believe she left to cause hardship for her estranged husband."We have been provided a very dark 500-plus page novel Jennifer wrote,'' lawyer Norm Pattis said in a 1494

As the race for president in 2020 continues to heat up, data privacy experts say people should be taking a closer look at laws surrounding your data. "One of the toughest things is that for most of us, being online is no longer an optional thing; it's a mandatory thing," says Jennifer King, director of consumer privacy at The Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School. King tracks consumer privacy issues across the board. "In terms of the data that’s collected about you, it’s a pretty tough scenario," she says. "There is a lot of data collection that happens without our knowledge. Some people argue you consent to it, but because the consent is usually buried in a long terms and conditions and privacy policy, and so you consent, but most of us don’t read documents or be expected to practically.” King says companies like Facebook and Google have so much power over people's information because of a lack of laws and oversight. "We don’t have any laws frankly that restrict data collection or data use mostly across the board,” she explains. "There are particular areas where data collection is protected, so for instance in the health context, but that’s with a medical provider, so the world of Fit Bits and health tracking. [What] people do online, that’s not covered by privacy law.”She says people should care about data privacy, even if they have nothing to hide.“I hear that a lot, ‘I have nothing to hide. I'm not doing anything wrong,’ so it kind of assumes that privacy is about hiding things," she says. "I would argue it's about a lot more just controlling who you are and your ability to do things in the world.”When it comes to election season, King says she'd like to see more people with a better understand of the tech world in Washington. "Certainly, there is not enough. So, there is a real need for technological expertise in Congress,” she says. “That doesn’t necessarily mean elected officials. I would not expect most elected officials to come out of software companies. I would actually argue we’d be better off if we didn’t have our elected officials coming out of Silicon Valley, for example.”King hopes there will be more “reasonable protections” for consumers in the next few years. "There is only so much you can do as an individual, and that’s why it’s important to say that to pressure elected representatives to say that you want real data laws," she says. 2421

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced Thursday that 39 vaping-related deaths have now been reported. Those deaths were confirmed in 24 states and the District of Columbia: Alabama (1), California (3), Connecticut (1), Delaware (1), D.C. (1), Florida (1), Georgia (3), Illinois (3), Indiana (3), Kansas (2), Massachusetts (2), Michigan (1), Minnesota (3), Mississippi (1), Missouri (1), Montana (1), Nebraska (1), New Jersey (1), New York (1), Oregon (2), Pennsylvania (1), Tennessee (2), Texas (1), Utah (1), and Virginia (1).The median age of the deceased is 53 years and ranged from 17 to 75 years old, according to the CDC. As of Tuesday, the CDC says 2,051 confirmed and probable lung injury cases associated with the use of e-cigarette, or vaping, products were reported across all states except Alaska. The lung injury associated with the outbreak is being called EVALI. The CDC says all patients in the outbreak have reported a history with e-cigarette products. Officials say the latest findings suggest products containing THC, particularly those obtained off the street or from other informal sources, are linked to most of the cases and play a major role in the outbreak. “THC is present in most of the samples tested by FDA to date, and most patients report a history of using THC-containing products,” writes the CDC.At this time, the FDA and CDC have not identified the cause or causes of the lung injuries in these cases. “No one compound or ingredient has emerged as the cause of these illnesses to date; and it may be that there is more than one cause of this outbreak.”The CDC continues to recommend that consumers not use e-cigarette, or vaping, products that contain THC. People are also discouraged from buying any type of vaping products, particularly those containing THC, off the street. You should also not modify or add any substances to e-cigarettes that are not intended by the manufacturer. 1971
