SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Democratic Party Chairman Eric Bauman announced Thursday that he plans to resign, following a cascade of sexual harassment allegations that emerged against him in recent days.Bauman's decision came hours after Governor-elect Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, called for the embattled chairman to step aside. Bauman said he would immediately give his resignation to party officials.Newsom cited a Los Angeles Times article describing allegations of crude comments and inappropriate physical touching by Bauman, including asking two young women if they were sexually involved."I have made the realization that in order for those to whom I may have caused pain and who need to heal, for my own health, and in the best interest of the party that I love and to which I have dedicated myself for more than 25 years, it is in everyone's best interest for me to resign my position as chair of the California Democratic Party," Bauman said in a statement.RELATED: Top California Democrat on leave amid sex misconduct inquiryHe did not directly address the allegations against him.Bauman's resignation announcement came after he said Wednesday he is seeking treatment for alcohol abuse and other health issues while he takes leave from the party chairmanship he narrowly won in early 2017. He is the party's first openly gay chairman. The party shake up comes as California Democrats celebrate sweeping victories in the November election that furthered the party's grip on power in Congress and the state Legislature. He has faced mounting pressure to quit since the party's vice chairman, Daraka Larimore-Hall, made allegations of sexual harassment and assaults by Bauman against unnamed victims.RELATED: Top California Democrat faced allegations before electionBefore Larimore-Hall's accusations, someone made a sexual harassment complaint to the party against Bauman days ahead of the midterm election, said David Campos, chairman of the San Francisco Democratic Party. He told The Associated Press that two young women reported drinking and comments about sex by Bauman during a state Democratic Party bus tour. The Los Angeles Times quoted two 21-year-old women describing Bauman asking them if they were sexually involved at a stop on the tour.Newsom, the incoming Democratic governor, "is troubled by the serious allegations," his spokesman Nathan Click said in a statement.RELATED: California Democrats investigate sex claims against chairman"Sexual harassment shouldn't be tolerated — no person or party, no matter how powerful, is above accountability," the statement said.Newsom's statement said the investigation should continue so victims can be heard, "but given the numerous detailed, severe and corroborated allegations reported by the Times, he believes the best course of action for the party is for the chair to resign."California Democratic Party Secretary Jenny Bach also called Thursday for Bauman to resign, citing the "harrowing and upsetting" allegations. 3004

RICHMOND, Va. — Despite a recent extension of student loan relief, experts suggest borrowers should begin preparing now for repayments to begin."The best thing you can do right now is to set a plan forward for your repayment," said Andrew Pentis, who works with LendingTree. "It's possible that this moratorium could be extended by the Biden administration or the newly-elected Congress. But Biden takes office on Jan. 20 and the current moratorium is expected to end right now at Jan. 31. So that only leaves you know less than two weeks for a decision to be made on whether the moratorium will be extended."Pentis said that since March, millions of student loan borrowers have been given an administrative forbearance, which suspended payments and interest and stopped collections on all defaulted student loans. He said borrowers with government-held federal student loans did not incur penalties during the moratorium."If you have an eligible federal student loan and you're seeing any of those negative impacts such as your credit score being affected your credit report showing and delinquent account, it's best to contact your federal loan servicers," Pentis said. For borrowers struggling to afford payments, Pentis suggested they enroll in an income-driven repayment plan to lower monthly payments. "You could also pause your payments via a deferment for unemployment or other economic hardship reasons," he said.He said hoping the government will simply wipe away the more than trillion in student loan debt is not a wise option."There are billions of dollars worth of private student loans and student loans that are no longer in the hands of the federal government," he said. "So even if both major political parties got together and decided this is what they wanted to do, it's unlikely that we would see more than a trillion dollars actually went away."While Pentis says it is best to plan to restart payments at the end of January, reports surfaced on Thursday that Congress is close to striking a deal on more COVID-19 stimulus that could include more student loan relief. This story was originally published by Shelby Brown on WTVR in Richmond, Virginia. 2181

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A federal lawsuit was filed Tuesday after a state audit found the California DMV's "motor voter" program that started in 2018 was riddled with technical problems that led to discrepancies in voter registrations.Attorney Harmeet Dhillon, a member of the National Republican party, filed the federal lawsuit Tuesday against the state of California that accuses Secretary of State Alex Padilla of violating the National Voter Registration Act.Padilla responded in a statement saying the lawsuit "is a fundamental misrepresentation" of the act. He called the lawsuit an "underhanded attempt" at voter suppression.Dhillon filed the lawsuit on behalf of three California residents who are Republican voters. The lawsuit also names the director of California's Department of Motor Vehicles, Steve Gordon.Dhillon said that a recent audit that found a variety of problems with California DMV's "motor voter" program, which automatically registers people to vote, helped bring the issues in her lawsuit to light. 1039
