SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California State University Board of Trustees announced the appointment Wednesday of Ellen Neufeldt as president of the San Marcos campus.Neufeldt will become the university's fourth president when she takes over in July. She is currently the vice president of student engagement and enrollment services at Old Dominion University in Virginia.CSU officials had searched for and interviewed candidates for the Cal State San Marcos presidency since November."Dr. Neufeldt has been a visionary leader who has demonstrated a commitment to student success throughout her career," said CSU Trustee and search committee chair Jean Picker Firstenberg. "She brings a wealth of experience, and will serve as an inspirational leader on the campus and in the community."Current CSUSM President Karen Haynes announced last September that she plans to retire in June. Haynes, will leave office as the longest-tenured president in the university's history, helped increase the school's population from 7,000 in 2004 to the current 17,000 and added 15 new buildings and more than 100 academic programs.Neufeldt has held her current role at Old Dominion since 2011, overseeing government relations and marketing and public relations in addition to student engagement and enrollment services. Prior to joining Old Dominion, she also served as the vice president of student affairs at Salisbury University and assistant vice chancellor for student development at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.Neufeldt said she was looking forward to her new post."There has been remarkable growth both on the campus and in the local community and the opportunity for additional growth still remains," Neufeldt said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Superior Court officials warned the public Thursday about a scam targeting the Hispanic community in which a scammer reportedly threatens to arrest people unless they pay for items they never ordered.According to court officials, a woman recently showed up at court looking for a fictional courtroom number. She had been told there would be a hearing on her refusal to pay for items the scammer said she purchased.The woman was told to either pay ,500 or be taken to court. When she came to the courthouse, the woman discovered there was no such case and the threat was a scam.When court staff dialed the phone number provided to the potential victim, the person who answered said she would only speak in Spanish.Superior Court officials are now warning vulnerable non-English speakers about the scam."It appears these scammers are targeting members of the community they believe won't go to authorities or show up at a courthouse," said Executive Officer Michael Roddy. "It appears they believe they can just take the money and no one will report them."These scams happen every year; sometimes they tell people there are charges for failing to show up for jury services or charges for clearing up arrest warrants; this time it's charges for not paying for ordered items," Roddy said. "Once again, we want the public to know the court or law enforcement will not call you with this type of issue and court will never, ever demand cash as the way to make charges go away."The public is told to simply hang up or contact law enforcement if the scammer gets aggressive. 1604

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Community College District announced Thursday it will continue online instruction through the remainder of the academic year, including the January 2021 intersession and Spring 2021 semester.SDCCD Chancellor Constance M. Carroll emailed district employees Wednesday informing them of the decision. With exceptions for a few programs that are difficult to offer virtually, all district classes have been online and all operations conducted remotely since March 23 to help curb the spread of COVID-19. Hybrid exceptions include various science and clinical laboratory sections, career classes with technical components and classes for first responders, which are offered on campus with all health protocols required. Carroll said more hybrid classes and on campus support services will be offered in the spring if the situation allows, but that the district's highest priority is the health and safety of its students and employees."It seems incredible that we are now in our sixth month of dealing with the coronavirus COVID-19," Carroll said. "I do not believe anyone could have predicted the longevity of this crisis."In her email, Carroll thanked district employees for their "dedication above and beyond the call of duty," to assist students, many of whom continue to face financial hardship due to loss of income. Seven in 10 district students work to support themselves and/or their families.To date, the district has distributed .3 million in federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act funds to more than 8,000 students at San Diego City, Mesa and Miramar colleges, as well as San Diego Continuing Education. Another 7,000 in funding is being provided by United Way of San Diego County to assist district students and 0,000 has been contributed by the San Diego Foundation to fund student laptops.In spite of these efforts, many district students have faced the difficult choice of continuing their educations or supporting their families, especially during a period when many public schools are online. Enrollment is down 8% across the district this fall.Of particular concern, Carroll said, is evidence that some of the region's most vulnerable students -- including those from lower-income communities and traditionally underrepresented groups -- have been impacted the greatest by the COVID-19 pandemic."We must ensure that the current public health crisis and economic crisis do not prevent our students from making progress towards their educational goals," she said. "The community and the workforce are counting on our ability to continue delivering a high-quality education and effective student outcomes."However, the district has also seen a 25% increase in enrollment in the San Diego Promise, the free tuition program for eligible students. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County residents have one week remaining to claim part of 0,000 in unclaimed money, the county's treasurer-tax collector said Thursday.California law requires that county refunds left unclaimed for three years and property tax refunds left unclaimed for four years be turned over to the county's general fund. County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister advised residents to inquire if they are owed one of the 1,503 refunds still remaining."We call our peak tax collection times in December and April our `two seasons of giving,' but now, we're in our season of giving back," McAllister said. "The deadline to claim this money is Sept. 7, so I encourage everyone to check the lists."Residents have only claimed about ,000 in refunds since the county announced in July it had a total of 1,000 to return, according to McAllister. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County had the fourth-most homeless residents in the U.S. this year, according to a report released Monday by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. San Diego County's data was taken from the 2018 Point in Time Study, completed Jan. 26. The region had an official count of 8,576 homeless residents during the three-hour window in which the count took place, behind Seattle/King County in Washington, Los Angeles County and New York City, which topped the list with 78,676 homeless residents. According to the report, roughly 5,000 members of San Diego's homeless population are unsheltered, living on the street, in a vehicle or in a hand-built structure such as a tent. Another 3,500 homeless residents were sheltered at the time of the study, living in emergency shelters, safe havens and transitional housing. The county's count could be higher than 9,000 homeless residents, however, because the San Diego Regional Task Force on the Homeless did not count residents in recreational vehicles and some residents in shelters. County officials and homeless advocates believe the actual homeless population could total as high as 9,220, but the true count has remained opaque since the task force, which oversees the Point in Time County, announced the error May 31. Overall, California leads all other states with 129,972 homeless individuals, followed by New York at 91,897. At the time the counts were completed in January, California laid claim to 24 percent of the country's total homeless population. Combined with New York, Florida, Texas and Washington, roughly half of the country's homeless population was clustered in five states. Homelessness in California has declined in recent years despite the robust total. The state's homeless population fell by 1,560, or 1.2 percent, from 2017 to 2018 and 9,014, or 6.5 percent, from 2007 to 2018. New York and Massachusetts have seen the biggest increases from 2007 to 2018, adding 29,296 and 4,941 homeless residents to their counts, respectively. 2052
