SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two San Diego County breweries were among the fastest growing craft breweries in the country in 2017, according to the Brewers Association.Novo Brazil Brewing Co. in Chula Vista and Bay City Brewing Co. in San Diego both made the list. The list includes breweries across 25 states. Novo was ranked as the 8th and Bay City 28th fastest-growing small breweries.California lays claim to the speediest growth with several breweries listed, according to the association.Median growth for the top 50 fastest-growing breweries between 2016 and 2017 was 216 percent, according to the Brewers Association. The median growth rate for those breweries was 679 barrels each.“With 5 percent growth overall for small and independent brewers in 2017 and microbreweries and brewpubs delivering the majority of that, we wanted to spotlight some of the breweries driving that growth,” said Bart Watson, chief economist of the Brewers Association.RELATED: San Diego-based Ballast Point to become Disneyland's first on-site brewery? The list includes small, independent breweries from all over the country that produce beer at their own facilities. IF YOU GO:Novo Brazil Brewing Co. 1198

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When a series of suspicious fires pop up and arson is suspected, law enforcement officials across California have a handy tool that could help track down or rule out potential suspects.“In California there’s a criminal arson registry put on by the California Department of Justice,” said San Diego Police Sgt. Rick Pechin with the Metro Arson Strike Team. “What that registry does is keep track of all arson registrants in the state of California.”The registry is similar to the Megan’s Law database, but it is not available for the public to access. “It’s a law enforcement computer database only,” said Pechin.RELATED: Video shows arsonist suspected of setting Ocean Beach, Point Loma firesOnce someone is convicted of the crime of arson, they must add their name and address to the registry 14 days after they get out of jail or prison. Offenders can even land themselves on the list even if they slip up just once, like burning a pile of an ex's clothing.“Sometimes it was a onetime mistake they may have made in the heat of the moment and it got them on the list for the rest of their lives,” said Pechin.Pechin and his team of detectives with San Diego’s Metro Arson Strike Team recently used the arson registry after a number of fires erupted across Ocean Beach and Point Loma in September. In the specific case, surveillance video revealed who investigators believed was starting the fires.RELATED: Arson teams investigating five suspicious fires in OB and Point LomaWith the description of the possible suspect, a fairly tall, white man with a thin build, MAST investigators went through the arson registry searching for people known to re-offend in the area. His description helped rule out a number of potential suspects.“It’s just as important as a tool used to exclude someone as it is to include them as a possible suspect,” said Mechin. There are random compliance checks for offenders on the list.“The compliance checks are basically just to make sure they still live in the same location that they gave the local police department when they moved in that area,” said Mechin. If the offender has moved, they must notify local law enforcement of their address change.RELATED: Suspect arrested in Carlsbad dealership arson, charged with insurance fraudPechin said officers have had some problems keeping up with chronic offenders.“If we find out that they are out of compliance we will try to track them down and they can be arrested,” he said.Although the registry helped rule out a number of known arsonists In the Point Loma and Ocean Beach suspicious fires case, a suspect was never arrested.Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or the San Diego Metro Arson team at 619-236-6815. 2766

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos made an unpublicized visit to a Poway Unified School District campus on Thursday. DeVos spent about two hours at the Design 39 campus in 4S Ranch, speaking to administrators, teachers, and students. "The questions she was asking kids was, 'Really, tell me about your learning, and what do you really enjoy about learning here? How has this helped you as a learner?'" said Megan Power, a teacher at the school and former Education Department fellow who helped arrange for the visit. DeVos is a polarizing figure in the Trump administration, partially for her stance on school choice. Opponents accuse her of wanting to pull money out of public schools to pay for private education.Poway Unified Superintendent Marian Kim-Phelps posted pictures on Facebook after the visit. Some parents blasted the district for even hosting her. One woman said if she had known she would have protested outside. Another called DeVos dangerous to public education.Other parents disagreed, saying politics aside, her visit was an honor."Just the fact that she came here to visit, someone of that high a profile speaks volumes to the school," said Matt Kolker, who was picking up his son from Design 39 campus Friday. Power, who had told DeVos about Design 39 during her fellowship, said it was a great opportunity."If we want the secretary to have a better understanding of what's going on in schools, we have to be able to invite her and the team into schools," she said. Superintendent Kim-Phelps called DeVos's visit a chance to advocate for the district and public education overall.Design 39 emphasizes design thinking, which it describes as "a creative, problem solving process which helps people design meaningful solutions."In a statement, education Press Secretary Liz Hill called Design 39 "a stellar example of rethinking education to meet the needs of students." She said DeVos was thrilled to learn more about their innovative approach. 1997
