VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - President Trump's endorsement Thursday to raise the minimum purchase age for assault rifles from 18 to 21 is sparking local debate.Christa Farmer, 19, has been cleaning and taking care of guns since she was 11.  Farmer bought an AR-15 when she was 18, which she uses for shooting competitions.  It's a gun Farmer is comfortable with, and she says the purchase age should stay at 18."At 18, I knew how to properly disassemble, assemble, clean, and the proper safety rules," said Farmer.Anti-gun-violence advocates like Ron Marcus want such rifles banned nationwide, but say raising the purchase age is a good step.    "The maturity range between 18 and 21, there's a lot of room for growth.  To allow that maturation process before they buy a gun is a good idea," said Marcus, Director of Public Outreach for San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention.Farmer counters with a different maturity argument.  She says she was 'mature enough' to enlist in the Army Reserve several years ago. "If we're old enough to enlist and carry these weapons, I believe we are mature and responsible enough to own them in our personal lives as well," said Farmer.Others say the two situations are different when it comes to owning AR-15s."In the military, you are subject to extreme discipline and oversight ... When they are off duty, a different story ... and they should be subject to civilian rules," said Marcus.Farmer doesn't agree with the reasoning because of the quality of the gun training in the military.As of last year, new sales of the AR-15 have been banned in the state.  Owners can still keep their old ones, but must register them with the state by June. 1727

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump traveled to Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Tuesday -- a city still reeling from social unrest following the shooting of Jacob Blake. Democratic Nominee Joe Biden has not visited yet although he said he was looking into it on Monday. Trump's visit to Kenosha comes days after the president stopped in Louisiana following the landfall of Hurricane Laura. But do presidential visits during a crisis help or hurt the community? "If I was doing his security, I would advise against it," Grant Whitus, a retired SWAT team leader in Colorado said. Whitus has protected presidents in the past and is a Trump supporter. Whitus says when a president comes to town, hundreds of officers need to be reassigned. "Their resources are already stretched to the max trying to deal with this," Whitus added. Many Wisconsin leaders feel the same way. Gov. Tony Evers (D) of Wisconsin wrote to the president unsuccessfully asking him to cancel his trip. Visits to areas in crisis have been a signature of Trump's since taking office. During his 2016 campaign, Trump visited Louisiana and their flood devastation a full four days before siting President Barack Obama made the trip. When asked if Trump was visiting Kenosha for political reasons, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said no. "The president is showing up to see hurting Americans," McEnany said. VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Students at Rancho Minerva Middle School in Vista are sending love to a city still grieving after a mass shooting. Jessica Ward, a 6th and 8th-grade teacher at Minerva, was inspired to act after seeing a Facebook post:"Hello. We are teachers in El Paso. We would like to know if anyone is interested in sending us postcards to help our students know there is plenty of good in our world. As teachers, we may only be able to say so much. We think concrete messages of support would help us calm some fears. Any thoughts?"Ward and her more than 160 students got to work, creating letters filled with love, support, funny jokes, and positivity. "I just hope this small little gesture will bring happiness and positivity to their lives," said Ward. Ward also showed the students news clips of the tragedy, answering questions about what happened less than a month ago. "It's just something I like to be open about, so they understand that it's important to talk about. It's not something that should be silenced, it's something that everyone should be aware of, and part of the fight is talking about it," said Ward.
