SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An inmate at R.J. Donovan State Prison has filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.Anand Jon Alexander filed the complaint on Monday, alleging prison officials failed to keep him safe and to provide adequate medical care after he was assaulted behind bars.In the complaint, Alexander claims he was attacked by another inmate while waiting to make a phone call on May 18, 2019. He was allegedly stabbed multiple times in the face and kicked on the ground.After the attack he sustained “five facial fractures, a lower orbital floor blowout, sinus and nasal fractures, a deviated septum, a 50% abrasion to the right cornea, long term impairment of his vision and respiration, serious nerve damage, PTSD” according to the complaint.Alexander is 12 years in to a 59 year sentence after he was convicted of rape in 2008.An up and coming fashion designer, Alexander had been featured on “America’s Next Top Model” and was listed in Newsweek’s “Who’s Next in 2007.”But his career was put on hold after being accused by multiple women of sexual assault.Many of the charges were dropped, but he was convicted on one count of rape and 15 other counts following a trial in Los Angeles. The jury found him not guilty or were hung on several other counts.Alexander has maintained his innocence. In the complaint, his lawyer writes he “has acknowledged the existence of blurred lines between his personal and professional relationships…Nevertheless, he holds steadfast to his innocence.”The American Justice Alliance, a group which seeks to free prisoners who have been wrongfully convicted, submitted an amicus brief to the Federal Central District Court.In it, they wrote Alexander “was targeted by a collusion of disgruntled business associates and some former girlfriends, who have admitted they were out to “bring him down,” and “get revenge,” seeking notoriety and monetary benefits. He was then subject to a prosecution and trial riddled with extraordinary police misconduct.”The lawsuit names CDCR as well as Marcus Pollard, the Warden of R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility and Daniel Paramo, the former Warden.It alleges prison officials failed to protect Alexander from harm and after he was injured gave “deliberate indifference to Mr. Alexander’s medical condition.”They are seeking unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.So far, no criminal charges have been filed against the assailant. 10News reached out to CDCR for comment but had not heard back before the story was published. 2557

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego police officer was involved in a shooting outside a music venue in downtown San Diego just before 7 p.m. Saturday.San Diego Police Lt. Mike Holden said that a white man in his thirties was acting violently on top of a vehicle hood on the corner of W. Ash Street and India Street.The man was only wearing pants and did not have a shirt or shoes on and was standing on the hood of a car yelling at the driver, police said. A police officer tried to take the man into custody and used a Taser, which did not subdue him. Police said the man continued to act violently.The officer then fired one shot, which did not hit anybody."The officer continued to struggle with the suspect," said Lt. Mike Holden of the San Diego Police Department. "At one point during the struggle the officer feared for his life. The officer fired one round from his handgun, but missed the suspect."The suspect, Brent Zadina, 30, was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for observation. Police do not believe Zadina was armed.The officer sustained minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital, Holden said. Police are investigating the incident near the Music Box. The roads were closed nearby for the investigation but have since reopened.This is a developing story. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Across the county, doorbell camera video has caught 'grinches' behaving badly."Upsetting and makes me feel violated," said Catherine Butler, who lives on Palm Avenue in La Mesa.When Butler woke up Wednesday morning, she came upon a mess outside her home. A wreath hanging on the side of her home was on the ground. A lighted garland was cut and left in her yard. It's not right and it's very grinchy," said Butler.Surveillance video reveals the culprit: a man walking barefoot on her patio railing, yanking down her lights. "I put up things because it's fun to be in the season. To have something negative happen, it just feels really personal," said Butler. Butler is hardly the only one feeling that way. There have been a plethora of videos posted this week of package thieves throughout the county, likely targeting Christmas presents. In Chula Vista, a video posted on the Neighbors App by Ring shows a man wrangling a large holiday wreath off a front door. In the post, the homeowner says the wreath had been put up for the last 15 years.In another post from Spring Valley, a person seen walking away from a home and into a waiting car took a Mickey Mouse projector light. Sometimes, a grinch can be dangerous. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After a deadly house fire in Logan Heights, 10News spoke with a retired fire captain on fire safety checks that can protect you and your family.Bob Lyon is a retired fire captain and knows the tragedy that can come with burglar bars in the Logan Heights neighborhood, "something that they're using for protecting their lives, ends up being something that costs them their lives."A Fire Code adopted in the late 1990's requires bars have a safety latch. "You put your foot on it, and it releases the bars because there's a little spacer in it and it will pop them, and the bars are supposed to swing open," Lyon said.RELATED: One dead, five injured in Logan Heights house fireMany homes still have old bars, or those with the safety mechanism can rust, locking them in place. "Rarely do people maintain those, just because they're something out of sight, out of mind," Lyon said solemnly.Neighbor Miguel Hernandez a few doors down from the deadly Sunday morning fire told 10News in Spanish he checks his home's bars often to ensure the security of his family. He added he checks the smoke alarms as well, changing the batteries the recommended 6-months or each year.Lyon said one more thing you can do is "sleeping with your bedroom doors closed because that helps compartmentalize and keeps the fire out of your room, gives you more time to get out."It also gives firefighters more time to get to you.Lyon said firefighters learn how to break through burglar bars in the academy, but it takes precious time. 1534

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A student at Nazareth School San Diego in Mission Valley is in the hospital with meningococcal disease, county health officials said Friday. The County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) said it is reaching out to anyone who came in close contact with the child at the K-8 school. Antibiotics are not being recommended for those who are not at risk. “While meningococcal disease can be serious and deadly, it is not spread through casual contact. Therefore, the risk to those who were not in close, direct contact is minimal,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “We want to make sure students are up to date on immunizations and are asking people in the school community to look for the signs and symptoms of the disease.” Meningococcal disease is caused by a bacteria and spread through close contact including sharing drinking glasses, eating utensils, and smoking or vaping equipment. The bacteria can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illness. Symptoms include fever, headache, sensitivity to light and noise, a stiff neck, and a rash. Anyone who develops the symptoms should get medical help, health officials said. 1193
