Events like food and wine tours have come to a halt across the country, prompting organizers to think outside the box. Some events have gone virtual while others are offering them "to go.""Tours just stopped, a hard stop around March 14. My first though was, which is crazy, is that it wasn't even me but what are my restaurants going to do because without them, there is no food tour," says Cristina McCarter, the owner of City Tasting Tours in Memphis, Tennessee.When the COVID-19 pandemic prompted shelter-in-place restrictions this spring, she made her business virtual, offering food delivery from local restaurants that were on her tasting tour. But when restaurants opened back up, she had to think of a new way to keep her business alive."I had to think of something else. So, I thought about, okay, maybe I could do a box and we can deliver some of the food items to people around town," says McCarter.That's when her friend, Lisa Brown, came in to help co-own and invest in their new business idea, City Tasting Box."We really just started to talk instantly about who are the vendors that we want to work with, who represents Memphis and we really just started to pull it off together. What is the experience we want it to be for the consumer?" says Lisa Brown.Brown and McCarter both wanted to create a product that not only showed off the best of Memphis but benefited local restaurants and food artisans. They've now launched two boxes.The first is the "Official Memphis Travel Box" and the second is the "Support Local Box." As for what's in the box? McCarter says, "There's Makeda's cookies in there and we always say you cannot visit Memphis and not have Makeda's cookies. That means you didn't do Memphis right if you didn't get your barbecue and your hot wings."Giving locals and the entire country a taste of town in a convenient "to go" box is a concept shared by others around the country who've had to shut down or adjust their business during the pandemic.At Seattle's Pike Place Market, organizers offer the Pike Box, which includes farmer's market produce delivered to your door without having to visit the market in person. Keeping safe, physical distances but still supporting local businesses, McCarter and Brown said the pandemic and their new business has taught them that they're stronger together, especially when showing off their Memphis pride."We want to push Memphis out to the whole nation and all of the good parts of what makes us who we are," says Brown.Already, the boxes are gaining traction.“It’s been going great. [We've had] really good response so far, mostly from out-of-towners,” McCarter said. “We've gotten a lot of messages from people saying, 'Oh this is such a great idea, we miss Memphis and didn't get a chance to come this year' or, 'We love Memphis and our daughter lives there.'"The two hope to expand their business later this year with specialty Christmas-themed boxes and food boxes featuring foods from other major cities, as well. 3001

Ethan Couch, known for his "affluenza" defense in his deadly drunk driving case, was released from a Texas jail Monday after serving nearly two years behind bars for violating his probation.Couch, 20, first made headlines as a teenager when he was sentenced to probation for a drunken driving crash that killed four people and seriously injured two others.Prosecutors in that 2013 case sought 20 years in jail, but Couch received no prison time after a psychologist testified that Couch was a victim of "affluenza," a product of wealthy, privileged parents who never set limits for him.The decision by the juvenile court judge to put him on probation for 10 years outraged victims' families and anti-drunk driving advocates.In 2015, Couch violated the terms of his probation and fled to Mexico with his mother, Tonya Couch. They were found and sent back to the US, where a Texas judge ordered nearly two years of jail time for Couch.Mothers Against Drunk Driving described the two years Couch has spent in jail as "a grave injustice to the victims and their families.""The 720 days Ethan Couch served for his crimes shows that drunk driving homicides still aren't treated as the violent crimes that they are," the organization said in a statement. It vowed to keep monitoring the case because it "brought to light that there is so much more work to be done to hold drunk drivers accountable."As part of Couch's current probation, he will be required to wear an ankle monitor, an alcohol detecting patch, submit to drug testing, abide by a 9 p.m. curfew and have a video interlock ignition device installed in his vehicle, according to Mike Simonds of the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office.Couch's mother is currently facing charges of money laundering and hindering apprehension of a felon for helping her son flee to Mexico. Emily Dorffer is a walking story, so it’s fitting she plans to make a career out of telling them.“I’m just one of those determined little stinkers that just never gives up,” Dorffer said.An important chapter in her life will end soon — the next time she walks the Johns Hopkins University campus it will be as a graduate.The English major's love for writing started at a young age, and she never let Cerebral Palsy keep the words from flowing. “In my case, that means I have some slight fine motor skills difficult,” Dorffer said. “Which basically for me means messy handwriting, and I get a little bit tired if I have to write a whole lot at once.”So, how did she get to the point of becoming a published author and college graduate?“Typing is no problem at all.”But don't call her an inspiration.“It’s my life it’s my normal, I understand that it’s not most people’s version of normal but it’s mine.”Dorffer put together together an anthology of stories from disabled writers from around the world.“There’s a wide range of topics. There’s some simple stuff like a character just goes and shops for groceries and you see how her anxiety disorder affects her,” Dorfer said.The stories for (Dis) Ability: A Short Story Anthology started piling in.“This story deals with more assistive technology and the adjustment to that as well the character's self-image and how that develops through the story,” Dorffer said.Shifting the focus away from the disability to the strong storytelling of talented authors.“It’s an intimidating issue to talk about something that their just not familiar with and they're afraid of offending people obviously.Her mother Virginia couldn't be prouder of her favorite haiku writer. “Even as a parent I never knew she could accomplish what she has accomplished. If you just let anybody do what their passionate about it’s amazing what they can do. ESPN is expected to cut at least another 100 employees after Thanksgiving, marking the company's third round of layoffs in the last three years, Sports Illustrated reported on Thursday. According to SI, the layoffs are expected to include several anchors from ESPN's longest-running program "SportsCenter." The layoffs are also expected to include other employees such as producers, executives and other staffers, SI reported. The layoffs to end 2017 come just seven months after ESPN laid off nearly 100 reporters from its roster. Among those laid off were basketball reporter Andy Katz, baseball reporter Jayson Stark and SportsCenter anchor Jay Crawford, to name a few. In 2015, ESPN laid off 300 employees, most of whom were behind the scenes staff. In recent years, ESPN has had to combat rising fees to carry live sports, coupled with a decline in cable television subscriptions. It said the people behind the network tried to conceal their identity and location via virtual private networks and other methods.U.S. intelligence officials have identified China as one of several countries, along with Russia and Iran, who they say could look to interfere in the 2020 election.
