A study released Wednesday by the British Medical Journal claims that vegetarians could have a higher risk of a stroke than meat eaters.The study followed more than 48,000 participants in the UK for nearly 18 years. The study placed participants in three groups: Meat eaters, fish eaters and vegetarians. The study claims that vegetarians were 20 percent more likely to have a stroke than meat eaters, which equaled to be three additional haemorrhagic stroke victims per 1,000 participants. Before you change your eating habits, you should know that meat eaters were more likely to develop a heart disease than vegetarians. The difference between meat eaters and vegetarians was 10 additional cases of heart disease per 1,000 participants. According to the British Medical Journal, previous studies on the correlation between a vegetarian diet and strokes only reported stroke mortality. In those studies, there was no significant difference between vegetarians and meat eaters in stroke mortality. The study did adjust for self reported high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, and body mass index, which suggests that part of the associations might be attributed to these factors, it says."However, the lower risk in vegetarians and vegans remained marginally significant after adjustment for all of these factors," the study said.To read the full study, click 1389

Across the country, 86 percent of police departments are dealing with an officer shortage. Half of those departments report the shortage has gotten worse in the last five years.“I grew up in a police family,” said Captain Nick Augustine with the Montgomery County Police Department. “I always saw the police car in the drive way, and it was always a career I wanted to go towards.”Augustine followed his father’s footsteps, put on a badge, and joined the force in 2001. He joined at a time when it was common to have legacy officers, meaning officers who were second or third generation police. However, with the declining number of people joining police departments, that has changed. “We may have one or two applicants who come from the law enforcement family that are actually applying to be a police officer,” said Augustine. As a captain in the Montgomery County Police Department, heading up the personnel division,Augustine has seen the shortage firsthand. The shortage in both legacy officers and the shortage in the number of people join the force altogether.The shortage at MCPD began in 2014. In August of that year, MCPD had 1,400 applicants for that academy class. The next class had only 600 applicants, which was a 58 percent reduction.“That was alarming,” said Augustine. “We were still able to fill our class at that point, but over the last couple of session, that has dropped where we haven’t been able to fill classes.”Any of the departments around the country, like Seattle and Miami, are dealing with shortages at a similar rate as MCPD. Adding to that, many departments are also seeing a rise in the number of officers resigning within the first five years on the job.“Looking at reasons why our numbers are dropping, the economy right now is very strong with low unemployment numbers,” explained Augustine. “Veterans--which we tend to have apply to be law enforcement officers--are now being offered private contracting jobs, which is paying higher than a government job.”Surveys from multiple police research organizations show recent controversial events and public perception of police officers have also played a role in the shortage.To combat this, departments have increased recruitment efforts. A New York woman drowned Friday while taking part in a stand-up paddleboard yoga class on Long Island, police said.Lisa Margaritis, 48, an experienced paddleboarder, was trying to help another woman who was struggling in the strong current under a bridge in Hashamomuck Pond when Margaritis' paddleboard got caught on a bridge piling and she fell in, Southold Police chief Martin Flatley said in a news release.Because she was tethered to the board, Margaritis wasn't able to free herself, Flatley said.A jogger passing by jumped in and was able to free Margaritis from the piling and bring her to land, he said.Southold police, the fire department's rescue squad and a hospital paramedic arrived and began CPR.
