The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is asking people who take a COVID-19 vaccine to download a smartphone app so it can continue to track side effects.The app, called V-Safe, uses text messages and web surveys from the CDC to check in with patients who have gotten a COVID-19 vaccine.The app will also remind patients when it's time to go back for a second shot.Patients can expect to experience mild symptoms like fever, headache and muscle aches after taking the vaccine. "But it's really important for all of us in the U.S. to make sure that we are helping to create a robust vaccine safety monitoring system for all COVID vaccines."Lee says that because clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccines have been so large — with 30,000 to 60,000 people in each trial, compared to just several thousand for a typical trial — there's already a lot known about the vaccines.The trials have shown no major safety risks thus far, but Lee says rare adverse events can happen — like the two healthcare workers in Alaska earlier this week who suffered anaphylactic allergic reactions with the Pfizer vaccine. The side effects reported by those two patients were similar to the ones suffered by two people in the U.K. earlier this month.Lee says that's why the CDC is counting on as many people as possible to use V-Safe."My hope is that if the numbers are high," Lee said. "It just means it gives us more information more quickly, and so for anything rare that might occur, we would be able to pick it up much more quickly."V-Safe send text messages to patients, asking them how they are feeling for up to six weeks after their shots. The calendar is about to flip from April to May, and normally storm chasers are flooding Tornado Alley to get a glimpse at the power of Mother Nature. But so far in 2018, there has not been much to chase. According to the National Weather Service, the state of Oklahoma, which is in the heart of Tornado Alley, has gone the entire year so far without a single confirmed tornado touchdown. Not since before 1950 has Oklahoma gone the first four months without a single tornado touchdown. By the end of April, the state would have averaged 17 tornado touchdowns. Last year, 13 tornadoes had touched down by the end of April. In 2016, there were 27 touchdowns in the month of April alone. In 2012, there were 54 confirmed touchdowns in April. The state of Kansas has also gone the entire year without a tornado. According to National Weather Service data, the state averages 12 tornadoes in the month of April alone. "On the whole, across the United States, we have seen around half the number of eyewitnessed tornado reports that we would normally expect by this time of year," Dr. Patrick Marsh, a meteorologist at the Storm Prediction Center, told CNN. Meteorologists are blaming, or crediting, a jet stream pattern that has sent big snow storms into the Upper Midwest for the decreased number of tornadoes. The pattern has prevented warm moist air from setting up in the Plains, which has cut off any fuel for potential tornadoes. According to the Storm Prediction Center, the upcoming weekend appears to void of any major severe weather outbreaks. The Cumberland, Wisconsin High School Class of 2018 got a special shout out from the local police department on an epic senior prank.The police department said on Facebook it was "one of the best senior pranks that Cumberland High School has seen."Students positioned an old junker strewn with loose bricks in front of what appeared to be a gaping black hole in the building's side, just outside the principal's office.It wasn't actually a hole, though. Using tape and a black tarp, the students created the illusion of damage, making it look like the car crashed into the side of the building. The back of the car said, "CHS Class of 2018."The best part? This prank included absolutely no damage at all to school property, which is why police singled it out."Hats off to the Cumberland High School Class of 2018 on your senior prank...Congratulations to all the seniors who are graduating," police said.This isn't the first time the tiny town of Cumberland has been in the viral spotlight. The current pandemic has led many people to spend more time outside this summer, with many setting up backyard pools or heading to lakes and beaches. But all of that water recreation has led to a spike in drownings."We were seeing it across a national level and when we looked at our local data, we saw that we were following as part of that trend," said Dawne Gardner, an Injury Prevention Specialist with Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Normally, they see anywhere from one to three child drowning deaths a year. This summer, they've seen nine."We know that with parents, they're looking for alternative vacations and things are limited right now with COVID-19 and still being able to social distance. We know that with those limited options, parents are utilizing backyard pools more," said Gardner. Gardner says it may seem safe to have your child swimming in your backyard but she says safety goes way beyond location. Supervision is key."You can't be distracted. So, when kids are in and around water, parents have to be on top of the supervision. Every second counts. And if you take your eyes off of them in the water even for a second, that could be that quiet second that a child slips under water," said Gardner.Other areas of the country also saw a dramatic change in the number of child drownings, but not all were bad. Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida reported that from March through June, doctors saw a 150 percent increase in child drownings and near-drownings compared to the same time period last year. While at Valley Children's Hospital in Fresno County, California, officials reported a sharp decline in child drownings. The shelter-in-place restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic don't just prompt families to take part in more water-related activities, they did so at a time when most swimming lesson facilities had to shut down.It was a concern for Aqua-Tots that kids were missing out on a crucial time for swim lessons. "It was incredibly hard to close the doors to our businesses at such a crucial time of year where families and children are outside in the heat and they're flocking to bodies of water. They're swimming a lot more often so it was very tough," said franchise owner Lindsay Thayer of Aqua-Tots. Aqua-Tots has 100 locations in 14 different countries, including here in the U.S. They teach swimming lessons to children, teens and adults. Thayer says to help prevent accidental drownings, children need to learn water safety."Children need to know that they need to ask permission, when to approach a body of water, when to get into a pool or lake with mom or dad, a guardian or adult before doing so. Also, swim lessons are especially important. Participating in a formal swimming lesson program can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% in children between the ages of one and four," said Thayer.Jen Deis, the General Manager of Goldfish Swim School near Cincinnati agrees. Goldfish Swim School provided some online tutorial videos for parents to help them teach their children some basic swimming skills. But she says swim lessons, even during the winter, are vital."Swimming is like any other sport or skill. Kids need constant reinforcement of those swim skills to remember those water safety skills year round. While, right now it is a top priority, with kids around bodies of water a lot of times, keeping them consistent in their swim lessons is really important," said Deis.Cincinnati Children's Hospital reports the nine drowning victims ranged in ages from young children to teenagers. Ensuring fences or other barriers are around pools is also important.They're urging parents to be vigilent when it comes to keeping your children safe around water, hoping to prevent any more accidental drowning deaths this summer. 3807
