WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House on Sunday pushed the federal government closer to the brink of a partial shutdown later this week, digging in on its demand for billion to build a border wall as congressional Democrats stood firm against it."We will do whatever is necessary to build the border wall to stop this ongoing crisis of immigration," said White House senior adviser Stephen Miller.Asked if that meant having a government shutdown, he said: "If it comes to it, absolutely."Trump said last week he would be "proud" to have a shutdown to get Congress to approve a billion down payment to fulfill his campaign promise to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. He suggested that could take the form of a stopgap bill that extends funding until January, or a longer-term bill that includes money for border security."There are a lot of things you need to do with border security," he said. "One is a physical barrier but also the technology, the manpower, the enforcement, all of those things, and our current laws are in some ways an incentive for people to come to this country illegally, and they go through great risk and possibly great harm."Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, urged senators to revisit a bill she helped push earlier this year that would provide .5 billion for border security, including physical barriers as well as technology and border patrol agents.Schumer declined to say whether Democrats would be willing to consider proposals other than the two options that he and Pelosi offered.Republicans "should join us in one of these two proposals, which would get more than enough votes passed and avoid a shutdown," Schumer said. "Then, if the president wants to debate the wall next year, he can. I don't think he'll get it. You can file for an extension here.Those filing for an extension must do so by July 15. The IRS says the extension provides additional time to file a tax return, but it’s not an extension to pay any taxes due.The IRS urges people who owe taxes, even if they have a filing extension, to carefully review their situation and pay what they can by July 15 to avoid penalties and interest.“The IRS understands that those affected by the coronavirus may not be able to pay their balances in full by July 15, but we have many payment options to help taxpayers,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “These easy-to-use payment options are available on IRS.gov, and most can be done automatically without reaching out to an IRS representative.”While the deadline for federal taxes remains on April 15, states may have different deadlines for their taxes. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration has sued former national security adviser John Bolton to block the publication of a book that the White House says contains classified information.The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, follows warnings from President Donald Trump that Bolton could face a “criminal problem” if he doesn’t halt plans to publish the book.The administration has also said the former adviser did not complete a pre-publication review to ensure that the manuscript did not contain classified material.The suit asks a judge to direct Bolton to notify his publisher that he was not authorized to release “The Room Where It Happened,” to further delay the release date of the book, and to instruct the publisher to take any and all steps to retrieve and dispose of any copies of the book that may be in the possession of any third party.The complaint also asks a judge to order that “all monies, gains, profits, royalties and other advantages” that Bolton and his agents receive from the book be placed in a “constructive trust for the benefit of the United States.Bolton’s attorney, Chuck Cooper, has said Bolton worked for months with classification specialists to avoid releasing classified material.Cooper has accused the White House of using national security information as a pretext to censor Bolton.As of Tuesday, Amazon listed the book as being released next week, on June 23. 1449

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A deadline set Tuesday under federal law essentially locks in President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, even though President Donald Trump is still falsely claiming he won reelection.Outlined in the Electoral Count Act of 1887, the safe harbor deadline falls six days before the Electoral College meets to formally cast votes for the president based on the popular vote in each state. This cycle, that vote will take place on Dec. 14.Other than Wisconsin, every state appears to have met the safe harbor deadline, which means Congress has to accept the electoral votes that will be cast next week and sent to the Capitol for counting on Jan. 6.By the end of the day Tuesday, every state is expected to make its election results official, with 306 electoral votes being awarded to Biden and 232 going to Trump. A total of 270 votes are needed to claim the White House.Those votes will elect Biden as the country’s next president.It’s called a safe harbor provision because it’s a kind of insurance policy by which a state can insulate its electoral votes against challenges in Congress by finishing up certification of the results and any state court legal challenges by the deadline. 1205
