PEORIA, AZ — An Arizona man and woman have been arrested after their three-year-old child died of an apparent fentanyl overdose.According to court paperwork, a three-year-old child was found dead on June 14 inside a Peoria, Arizona, home by the child’s mother.Police say Shala Durham and Ryan Konkol were interviewed by detectives after they responded to the home, and weren’t able to give a clear, consistent account of what transpired before the child was found dead.Court paperwork shows that Durham told officers she had recently purchased Xanax from a street drug dealer, and that she was also under medical treatment of Methadone.Durham allegedly told police that she had taken one-and-a-half pills and left the others in her purse on a table before falling asleep with the child on a living room couch. Konkol reportedly fell asleep around the same time on a separate couch. Durham said that when she woke up the next day, the child was deceased.Search warrants were obtained for blood samples of Durham and the child’s father, Ryan Konkol. Results for Durham and Konkol came back positive for fentanyl. A lethal amount of fentanyl was also detected in the victim’s blood.Lab results showed the pills to be Alprazolam, which is a benzodiazepine, used to treat anxiety and as a sleep aid. Both Durham and Konkol face one count of first-degree murder. This article was written by 1390

Petty Facebook drama can be uncomfortable and a little tacky but generally speaking, no one's really worried about going to jail over it.That is, until Anne King and a friend found themselves behind bars for a few hours in 2015 after bad-mouthing King's ex-husband, a sheriff's deputy in Washington County, Georgia, on Facebook. Now King is suing her ex and his colleague for violating her constitutional rights.A short Facebook tiff results in jail time 462

People across the U.S. are honoring loved ones who have passed from COVID-19 as part of a National Week of Mourning.Kristin Urquiza’s father, Mark, passed away from COVID-19 on June 30 in Arizona. She said in his obituary that "his death is due to the carelessness of the politicians who continue to jeopardize the health of brown bodies."Urquiza says her dad was one of her best friends and very generous guy. She’s speaking our with hopes of saving other people of color from the disease.“Seeing those disparities play out in my hometown, in my home neighborhood, and then having my dad go through this awful fight for his life and not be able to make it, I knew that I needed to speak my truth,” said Urquiza.Fiana Tulip's mother, Isabelle, was a respiratory therapist for 30 years. She was a year from retirement. Tulip says her mom continued to go into work even though she didn't have enough personal protective equipment and knew she was putting her life at risk. She passed away from COVID-19 on July 4 in Texas.Tulip says her mom was a “giant in her kindness,” as well as loving, giving, strong and resilient.“My mom was so brave, and I want her to be remembered as somebody who was thoughtful and who was generous and who was a hero, somebody who gave her life to save others,” said Tulip. She says in her mom's obituary "her undeserving death is due to the carelessness of politicians who undervalue health care workers."Mark and Isabelle are just two of the more than 210,000 lives lost to COVID-19 in the U.S.Tulip says if the country keeps ignoring the fact that people are dying, we’re going to have pretty traumatic effects later on.“So, it's important to feel and to share the warmth and to spread the love right now,” she said.“We are putting a stake in the ground to say we need to recognize, and recognition begins with collective mourning. It gives us permission to mourn out loud,” said Urquiza.Virtual vigils are happening at 12 p.m. ET through Sunday. You can find a link to attend at WeekOfMourning.com. 2035

Photos show what appears to be a person dressed like Hitler at a Halloween event near Las Vegas. The pictures were snapped during a trunk-or-treat Halloween event at Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City, Nevada on Friday.Folks noticed someone dressed up as Hitler, down to swastikas on the side of his sleeve. The posts quickly spread over the weekend across many Boulder City and Las Vegas Facebook pages. The 12-year-old boy’s father said his son was studying World War II and the evil dictator at school. He says his son just wanted to wear the costume. The father added his son is just a child and didn’t mean to offend anyone, and says this whole thing is blown out of proportion.KTNV in Las Vegas spoke with the area chapter of the Anti-Defamation League, who says the costume promotes hate and indifference.“Even though nothing illegal happened, it was very offensive and can't be allowed to be the norm,” said Jolie Brislin, Anti-Defamation League. 962

Parents worried about a lack of social-emotional growth in their young children during social distancing and child care closures, consider playing with the family dog or taking the whole family on the dog's walk.A study published this week in Pediatric Research points to improvements in toddlers’ behavior interacting with others when they have some amount of time spent with the family dog.Information from more than 1,600 parents were included in the study, which asked how old their children were, if they had a dog, how often the child went on the family dog walks or actively played with the dog, as well as other questions. In addition, parents filled out a Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire about their child’s development and behavior.Overall, researchers found that preschool aged children from dog-owning homes had reduced likelihood of conduct problems and increased likelihood of prosocial behavior compared to children without a dog. Positive results were seen with family dog walking at least once a week and active play between the family and dog at least three times or more a week. The study’s authors report part of their motivation for the study was the decreasing physical activity levels of young children. They reference studies on increased activity among adult dog owners, and wanted to look at whether there were increased levels in children with dogs in the home.Participants live in Australia, and gave their survey results between 2015 to 2018 as part of a larger early childhood education and care research project. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire is a commonly used, 25-item document that measures the social and emotional well-being of children. If a family dog is not possible at this time, maybe consider offering to walk a neighbor’s pet; physical activity, interacting with an animal and the benefit of doing something nice for a neighbor. 1900
