SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Scripps Health in San Diego is inundated with calls from people who are worried that they might have the coronavirus.“Understandably, people are now getting upper respiratory infections and right away they're thinking is this COVID-19 so they're calling the line and we're giving them the help that they need,” says Dr. David Wetherhold.The hospital network's dedicated COVID-19 nurse line is reportedly peaking at 60 calls every 15 minutes, connecting patients to nurses for screenings. If a nurse believes that a phone call warrants a video call and the video call warrants actual testing, the nurse will assign the patient a time to park outside one of the cabanas now staged outside three of the Scripps Health clinics. The patient will then call in. “A single licensed provider will come out to your car [and] do an evaluation. They'll check your blood pressure. They'll check your temperature. They'll check your pulse and your oxygenation level and then they will obtain the COVID-19 sample which is a swab into the nose,” adds Wetherhold.Wetherhold says COVID-19 test results come back in two to four days. Positive patients will only need to return for treatment if their symptoms are unmanageable. He's also working vigorously on Scripps Health’s larger telehealth program. It was supposed to roll out over the next 18 months, but with COVID-19, it's been compressed into a few weeks. Wetherhold tells 10News that patients who are considered "at risk" are in desperate need of virtual care so that they can avoid any potential exposure to COVID-19. “The immunocompromised, transplant patients, heart failure patients or cancer patients. [They’re] going to be our initial focus [with] trying to get them the care they need remotely without bringing them out into the community," Wetherhold said.Scripps Health’s nurse line is 888-261-8431 and is staffed from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.The cabanas are located outside Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines, Scripps Clinic Rancho Bernardo and Scripps Coastal Medical Center Vista and are only available to patients directed there through the nurse line. 2189

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s boating community is stepping up to help a family who lost their floating home in a fire. The boat, Both/And World, caught fire while docked at the Shelter Island Marina Saturday just before 3 p.m. "I was just merely walking off of the boat and saw the smoke, thought it was a barbecue then the kids started screaming on the dock and saw the black smoke and knew it was time to react,” said witness Charlie Colson. The man who lived on the boat with his family grabbed a small hose and tried to put out the flames, Colson said. People on shore grabbed a larger hose and had most of the flames knocked down by the time firefighters arrived. Colson said the family, which includes the man’s wife and 6-year-old son with special needs, had just moved on to the boat last week. The only salvageable items were the boy’s stuffed Donald Duck and his iPad. According to Colson, the flames were sparked by a lithium battery on a charger. Investigators have yet to release the official cause of the fire. “It’s gonna change their plans for a little but it’ll all work out,” said Colson. “The lucky part: no one was hurt; no other boats damaged; family’s okay, other than being rattled.” Colson believes the boat is a total loss. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Arts Park @ Chollas Creek has been helping young people for almost 20 years now."The reason this place was started was there was a lot of vandalism in the community. I was part of the problem then, I consider myself part of the solution," said Jose Venegas, a co-founder, and Program Coordinator at Writerz Blok. During his teenage years, Venegas turned to graffiti. "It was that or gang bang really, to be honest, I grew up in a neighborhood where there was a lot of gang activity, a lot of drugs."A twist of fate led his friends to tag a vacant property in Southeast San Diego owned by the Jacobs Center. Rather than make the teens someone else's problem, the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation embraced them, donating the space and funding materials. "We encounter a lot of youth who show artistic expression but have never had a mentor or seen professional artists doing murals, graffiti," said Bennett Peji, Vice President of Impact and Partnership for the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. Their mission is to foster a thriving community envisioned and realized by its residents.“The identify of a place should really reflect the the community that lives there but that’s not often the case," said Peji. Jacobs Center donated the property and funded materials to make the Arts Park a reality. Writerz Blok artists have able to help hundreds of teens and they now do workshops in high schools as well as the East Mesa Juvenile Detention Center."It's a very soothing feeling, it's like therapy," said Venegas. "I feel like this place has done more than offer a space to paint."The Arts Park is open Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. It will also be open one Saturday a month in the summer. 1755

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several recent storms to hit the San Diego County region could spell disaster for erosion prone areas of the coast and inland valleys.Rainfall running over coastal bluffs with a history of erosion could increase the likelihood of future erosions along our shores. Adam Young, a scientist with Scripps Institution of Oceanography San Diego, says an active season already could led to more crumbling of local cliff sides following heavy showers."Pretty much whenever you have a new rainfall event, you'll pretty much see a new landslide ... The more rain we get, the more landslides," Young says. "Every time you have a failure, stress distribution can change."RELATED: Video: Bluff collapse halts train travel through Del MarAlong the coast, the potential is worsened by waves crashing against the coast. As waves erode the bottom of cliffs, rainfall running over the top can create more stress and instability, Young added."As long as waves are hitting the cliff, they're going to keep falling down," Young said. "At the beach, waves and rain work together to speed up the process."This month, Scripps researchers were surveying a Del Mar cliffside when a 55-foot-wide slab crumbled before their eyes — and on video."it's almost certain that landslide was caused by that rainfall," Young said refering to recent rains. "The state we're in now is because we had a bunch of rain. Rainfall slowly moves through rocks, increasing the weight of the cliff and sapping its strength — until gravity takes over."That water is very slowly flowing through there," Abbott said of San Diego's coastal bluffs. "After the rain stops, several weeks later we'll be back to before the rain started. We're definitely not over."That's not to say inland bluffs aren't at risk. While rainfall helps speed up the process at the coast alongside waves, the risk remains further into the county as well.Inland, the minerals actually swell as it absorbs water, Abbott said, becoming heavy until, once again, gravity grabs hold.RELATED: Devastating 'ARk' storm envisioned for California by U.S. Geological Survey"When we go inland, we're talking about clay minerals. Think about a regular old book. If you took a paper book and dumped it in water, it would swell," Abbot said. "[Inland minerals] actually take the water inside their structure and swell ... they lose strength."Abbott pointed to San Diego's 1982-83 El Ni?o, which caused major destruction to inland communities as well as coastal communities."[There's a] high probability that these cliff collapses will continue at least through the rainy season," Abbott says. "We're getting to the place that it wouldn't be a surprise if we had inland landslides that affect homes." 2944
