LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Six Catholic dioceses across California, including Los Angeles and Orange, announced the creation today of a ``compensationalternative to pursuing lawsuits against the church.Diocese officials said the fund will be open to all clergy sex abuse victims, including people living in the country illegally and those who are barred from filing lawsuits because the abuse occurred long ago and is beyond the statute of limitations.``We have been providing pastoral care and financial support for victim-survivors here in the Archdiocese for many years,'' Los Angeles Diocese Archbishop Jose Gomez wrote in a letter to members of the diocese. ``We will continue to do so. But we also understand that some victim-survivors are reluctant to come to the church for assistance. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Four strikingly similar attacks on women in California and Illinois were all planned and executed by a skilled serial killer who studied the lives and homes of victims who lived near him before savagely stabbing them, a prosecutor said Tuesday.Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Garrett Dameron in his closing argument tried to establish that the killings of three women and the attempted killing of a fourth who fought him off were all the unmistakable work of 43-year-old Michael Gargiulo.All the attacks were bold but stealthy, Dameron said, coming at night inside or just outside the women's homes by a man with knowledge of the residences and the surrounding neighborhood, knowledge of the life patterns of the victims, and knowledge of how to kill quickly and cover his tracks."Those similarities point to one man, one killer: Michael Gargiulo," Dameron said.The killings involved dozens of deep stab wounds delivered by a strong man, Dameron said. In none of the cases was there evidence of a fight that preceded the stabbing, nor were the victims robbed or sexually assaulted, though prosecutors have alleged that Gargiulo got a sexual thrill from the brutality of the killings. In none of the attacks was a murder weapon found. And all the victims were left in the spot where they were killed."These were monstrous, torturous attacks, all four," Dameron said. LONG BEACH (CNS) - For thousands of years, millions of tiny white abalone snails lived along the California coast.Now facing extinction, the white abalone will be getting a major boost toward survival this month, thanks to a breeding program spearheaded by marine organizations across the state, including the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.In mid-November, researchers from the aquarium, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, the Bay Foundation, Paua Marine Research Group and state Department of Fish and Wildlife will be releasing white abalone into the wild at a series of undisclosed locations across Southern California.RELATED: Dog swept out to sea rescued, owner asks for more signage"This is a historic moment, as a species once on the brink of extinction may finally have a chance to rebound," said Sandy Trautwein, vice president of animal husbandry at Aquarium of the Pacific. The white abalone were actually placed underwater at their release locations last month, but they remain inside holding boxes."Natural recovery is not occurring fast enough or at all for this species to rebound on its own," said Melissa Neuman of the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Services' Abalone Recovery Program.
