Instead, they sleep on couches, with siblings, or even the floor.When 13-year-old Lilia Montiel learned about the problem, she wanted to help fix it. Montiel's dad is a speech and language pathologist who works at several schools, including Empower Charter School. While working there one day, he learned his student had suffered rat bites due to sleeping on the floor.“That really struck a chord in my heart and made me really sad," remembers Lilia. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Democratic presidential candidates took direct aim President Trump and the nation's gun laws at the Unidos US political conference in San Diego Monday. “We don't need thoughts and prayers out of Washington. What we need is strength and some resolve that we haven't seen yet,” said former Vice President Joe Biden.In an interview, candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders renewed calls for an assault weapons ban but acknowledged uwpards of 10 million are already in civilian hands. “That is more than the United States military has,” Sanders said. "We have to immediately ban the sale and distribution; I think we ought to take a hard look about licensing these weapons for the people who own them."Sanders added a buyback program would also be an option.Sen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Home sales in San Diego are starting to see a dramatic decrease, according to a new report by CoreLogic.Year-to-year, home sales fell nearly 18 percent from September of 2017 to September of 2018. From August to September of this year, home sales fell nearly 22 percent. Since 1988, the average change in sales between August and September is only 9.8 percent.“The nearly 18 percent year-over-year drop in Southern California home sales this September was the largest for any month in almost eight years,” said Andrew LePage, a CoreLogic analyst.Also in September, sales of newly-built homes in Southern California were 46.6 percent below the September average since 1988.The drop in home sales is due to higher prices and rising mortgage rates, according to CoreLogic. Those factors are pricing out some would-be buyers and prompting others to wait and see what happens with the housing market.The median home price in San Diego County in September of 2018 was 5,000, up nearly eight percent from the same time last year, however, the median price fell by 1.4 percent from August to September of 2018.“Price growth is moderating amid slower sales and more listings in many markets,” LePage said. “This is welcome news for potential homebuyers, but many still face a daunting hurdle – the monthly mortgage payment, which has been pushed up sharply by rising mortgage rates.” 1405

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite skyrocketing prices, San Diego’s housing inventory is up in 2018, according to a new report by Trulia. The trend in America’s Finest City sits opposite the national trend, which is seeing a declining inventory. The national drop in inventory in the fourth quarter of 2018 was mainly driven by a drop in for-sale homes, however, in San Diego, the total for-sale inventory rose by more than 27 percent. San Diego’s trade-up inventory saw the largest increase at more than 46 percent. The report points out that, despite inventory gains in San Diego, prices continue to rise, outpacing wage growth. The trend places homeownership out of reach for many first-time homebuyers.
