A woman in Illinois is warning others about the dangers of gel manicures claiming that the UV lamps at the nail salon gave her cancer.Karolina Jasko, 20, told WFLD that she was diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer. Jasko says that her doctor said it was most likely caused by getting her nails done at the nail salon. Specifically, Jasko claims the cancer was caused by the lamp that emits UVA rays to cure gel manicures.According to an unrelated report published by the American Academy?of Dermatology, UV exposure during gel manicures should be a concern for everyone, but especially for people who are highly sensitive to UV light. Chris G. Adigun, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in nail disorders, says that although the UVA rays don’t burn the skin like UVB rays, they do penetrate the skin to damage DNA and collagen, which can lead to premature aging and may increase skin cancer risk. Dr. Adigun says that a common misconception people believe is that LED curing lamps provide a safer option at nail salons, however, those lamps also emit UVA light.“The UV dose that you receive during a gel manicure is brief, but it’s intense,” Dr. Adigun says. “Over time, this intense exposure can add up to cause skin damage.”In order to protect your skin, doctors urge customers that get gel manicures quite frequently to wear YouVeeShield. Actress Tamera Mowry-Housley was active on social media on Thursday looking for help locating her and husband's niece Alaina Housley who was presumably at the California bar where a gunman killed 12 before taking his own life. Late Thursday morning, the couple confirmed to NBC News that Alaina Housley was among the 12 killed. "Our hearts are broken. We just learned that our niece Alaina was one of the victims of last night’s shooting at Borderline bar in Thousand Oaks," the couple said in a joint statement to NBC. "Alaina was an incredible young woman with so much life ahead of her and we are devastated that her life was cut short in this manner. We thank everyone for your prayers and ask for privacy at this time."Mowry-Housley's social media thread hours after the late-night shooting shows the frantic nature of trying to gather information of loved ones after mass shootings. The shooting took place before midnight late Wednesday night, and Mowry-Housley's Instagram post came more than nine hours later. Mowry-Housley's sister Tia Mowry was also active on social media trying to gather information. "Alaina Housely we are praying," Tia Mowry wrote in Instagram Thursday morning. "We love u! If you know anything or any information please let us know. We love you! #borderline"Earlier on Thursday morning, Alaina Housley's roommate had posted a plea on Twitter trying to find information on her roommate. Mowry-Housley responded to her niece's roommate and went to Twitter looking for any information she could gather on her niece. Mowry-Housley's husband Adam Housley then went to a California hospital in search of their niece. The Los Angeles Times reported that he was turned away by guards at the hospital. “My gut is saying she’s inside the bar, dead. I’m hoping I’m wrong,” he told the LA Times. He added that his niece's Apple Watch and iPhone locators were tracked to the bar's dance floor. The Los Angeles Times reported that Alaina Housley was 18 years old and a freshman at Pepperdine University. Pepperdine confirmed that 16 of its students were at the bar at the time of the shooting, and there was one unaccounted for as of late Wednesday morning. 2335
Almost 30 million Facebook users' phone numbers and email addresses were accessed by hackers in the biggest security breach in the company's history, Facebook said on Friday. The attackers accessed even more details on 14 million of those users, including the area where they live, their relationship status and their religion. The new details come two weeks after Facebook first announced that attackers had access to 50 million users' accounts -- meaning they could have logged in as those users. Facebook said on Friday that, "We now know that fewer people were impacted than we originally thought," and said that 30 million people had been impacted. For the 14 million worst hit by the breach, the attackers were able to access the following information, Facebook said: "username, gender, locale/language, relationship status, religion, hometown, self-reported current city, birthdate, device types used to access Facebook, education, work, the last 10 places they checked into or were tagged in, website, people or Pages they follow, and the 15 most recent searches."Facebook said it will send a message to the 30 million users affected in the coming days. The company also said it is cooperating with the FBI, the Federal Trade Commission and the Irish Data Protection Commission.Facebook is regulated by Irish authorities in Europe as its European headquarters is located there. A spokesperson for the Irish data regulator said of Friday's announcement, "The update from Facebook today is significant now that Facebook has confirmed that the personal data of millions of users was taken by the perpetrators of the attack."Despite Friday's announcement, there are still many details about the hack that have not been made public, including who was behind it.The attack prompted Facebook to take the unprecedented step of logging out the 50 million users whose accounts were exposed and logged out another 40 million users as a precautionary measure. 2056
Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals has been considered one of the best players in hockey for the last decade. But despite his incredible skill, he has had little to show for his success in the playoffs. That is until this season. Ovechkin scored the go-ahead goal in Wednesday's pivotal Game 7 matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The goal ended up being the only one Washington needed in its 4-0 shutout over the Lightning to win the best-of-seven series 4-3. The victory earns Ovechkin his first appearance in the Stanley Cup Final. It also only the second time the Capitals have reached the Final. "I can’t explain my emotions. I am just happy for my boys. I can’t wait to come back home and play for a Stanley Cup," Ovechkin said. It was a tough road for Washington to just its second conference title. Washington had to come from behind in all three series during the playoffs. The road to the Stanley Cup Final was a bit easier for Vegas. The Golden Knights clinched their spot in the Stanley Cup Final last Sunday, defeating Winnipeg for the Western Conference title. Vegas beat all odds reaching the Final, as it was the first expansion club to even reach the playoffs in the expansion era. Vegas used a hodgepodge of leftover pieces from the rest of the NHL to build a roster good enough to overpower the rest of the conference. The Golden Knights turned role players like ex-Columbus Blue Jackets forward William Karlsson and former Florida Panthers winger Jonathan Marchessault into bona fide stars this season. 1619
