More than 500 spellers will have a chance to compete for the title of Champion at this year's Scripps National Spelling Bee, which is May 29-31 in National Harbor, Maryland. This record number of spellers, 516, comes with the introduction of RSVBee, an invitational program that has created more opportunities for champion spellers to compete in the national finals. The Bee invited 238 qualified spellers through RSVBee.Sponsors of regional bees wrapped up their local events in April, with 278 local champions qualifying for the national finals.“Bee Week is a special experience that challenges the mind and warms the heart,” said Paige Kimble, executive director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. “To welcome more spellers than ever to compete exemplifies the evolution of our program and the vast interest from families across the country. With RSVBee, we are leveling the playing field for national finals qualification and providing more opportunities for students to experience all the thrills, friendships and memories that come from the event.”To qualify for RSVBee, spellers had to win their school spelling bee or be a former national finalist and attend a school enrolled in the Bee program. Parents applied on behalf of their child and paid a 0 participation fee to accept an invitation.   1331

NASA said that astronauts successfully grew radishes on board the International Space Station for the first time in NASA history. The plants are being placed in cold storage to be examined when astronauts return from the space station in 2021.NASA says that the radishes reached maturity in 27 days, and are fully edible and nutritious.“Radishes are a different kind of crop compared to leafy greens that astronauts previously grew on the space station, or dwarf wheat which was the first crop grown in the APH,” said Nicole Dufour, NASA APH program manager at Kennedy Space Center. “Growing a range of crops helps us determine which plants thrive in microgravity and offer the best variety and nutritional balance for astronauts on long-duration missions.”Growing plants on board could be an important step in order to send astronauts to Mars and beyond. NASA said its encouraged by the results given that radishes are easy for astronauts to maintain. 959

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — As the COVID-19 vaccine starts to be administered and mid-state counties are already reporting that they’ve received the first shipments, doctors want you to know about the possible side effects of the vaccine, and not to be confused about them, including sore muscles, aches, and a fever."It’s a small one to two days sense of illness," said Patsy Stinchfield, with the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. "It usually lasts about a day and it is far, far better than having COVID disease."Doctors say those side effects are actually a sign that the vaccine is working as your body builds and remembers defenses against a future attack."That is something we have to educate people about every year with the flu vaccine. I have patients that say, 'Well, I got the vaccine and I felt like garbage the next day," Well, a side effect is to make you feel kind of crummy for a day or two because it's developing this wonderful immune response," said Susan Bailey, president of the American Medical Association.Doctors say they’re also fighting misinformation about what’s in the COVID vaccine. The shots contain small amounts of dead COVID virus, so you cant get COVID from the vaccine.Doctors say whether to get the vaccine is your choice — they just want you to be armed with the correct information. This story was first reported by Jason Lamb at WTVF in Nashville, Tennessee. 1410

Motorcycle land speed record holder Valerie Thompson survived a 343-mph crash while attempting to break the overall two-wheel record in Australia on Monday, according to Fox News.According to the report, the 49-year-old Thompson was going for the record at the Lake Gairdner World Speed Trials "when something went wrong during her run and the bike fell onto its side, digging a deep trench into the salt flats and spreading wreckage over a mile."Thompson's "Bub 7" motorcycle reportedly lifted off the ground, with its parachutes eventually allowing it to come to a complete stop. Thompson told Fox News that she's "doing OK" and is headed back to Scottsdale to determine what went wrong.Thompson earned the title of world's fastest female motorcycle racer when she topped out at 304.263 mph at the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials in 2016. Known as "America's Queen of Speed," Thompson has won a number of racing awards and was featured in the 2013 documentary "Why We Ride." She is a vehicle presenter at Barrett-Jackson Auction Company and Metro Auto Auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona.  1148
