(KGTV) - For penguins living in a barren, frozen tundra, they have surprisingly exceptional selfie skills. Two Emporer penguins were caught on camera curiously inspecting a research camera from the Australian Antarctic Division near Antartica's Mawson research station. The up-close look at the penguins was captured after Australian Antarctic expeditioner, Eddie Gault, left the camera on the ice when visiting the rookery. Not long after, the birds seized the opportunity for a selfie.RELATED: 'Monkey selfie' case: PETA, photographer reach settlement over imageAfter inspecting the camera, the two seem to agree it's not something to eat, perhaps, shaking their heads at one another. 732

(KGTV) - A ballot initiative could relieve Californians squeezed by rising rent prices. The initiative, led by the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, is pushing to repeal the state's 1995 Costa Hawkins Rental Housing Act, which prevents rent control from being applied to all housing built after 1995.The initiative has gained at least 25 percent of the signatures needed, according to the Sacramento Bee. If successful, the initiative could give communities more power over rent control ordinances. RELATED: San Diego group calling for rent controlSupporters believe a repeal of the act will help solve California's rent crunch, but critics fear such a repeal will stifle construction and development, and only make things worse. The initiative's organizers have until June 25 to gather 365,880 signatures from California voters to qualify for the November ballot, according to the Sacramento Bee.The push for rent control isn't just taking place on the state level.RELATED: New numbers show exodus from San Diego County, CaliforniaThe National City Families for Fair Rent coalition of tenants and community leaders are kicking off a signature-gathering campaign on March 24 to submit a proposal for rent control to the city. The group hopes to get their measure submitted to the November ballot as well to have a program implemented to stabilize rising rents in National City. 1440

(KGTV) - A Los Angeles-area McDonald's location made a noticeable gesture Wednesday aimed at celebrating women. The restaurant in Lynwood flipped its iconic "golden arches" upside-down to mark International Women's Day, celebrated on March 8.In a statement, McDonald's said simply "today, we celebrate" women:"We recognize the extraordinary contribution of women. From employees and franchisees, to suppliers and community partners, to our customers, we are inspired by your strength and leadership. In the U.S., we're proud to share that 6 out of 10 restaurant managers are women. They run the McDonald's business each and every day. So, in honor of women everywhere, we're flipping our iconic logo for International Women's Day." 753

(KGTV) — California is now allowing breweries, bars, wineries, and distilleries to sell drinks to-go if they partner with a meal provider to provide food as well. The state's Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) announced the change Friday, allowing locations that do not have their own kitchen to reopen for business in some fashion. The change comes after several requests to expand to-go sales to breweries, bars, wineries, and distilleries that do not have kitchens, according to ABC. In March, the agency allowed those locations with kitchens to sell drinks to-go with food.RELATED:Pacific Beach's El Prez shut down for violating health ordersWhat to know: Changes at beaches, restaurants this Memorial Day weekendABC says the change will help more than 50,000 small and large businesses affected by economic challenges amid the coronavirus pandemic."We know businesses have suffered as they continue fighting to slow the spread of COVID-19," said ABC Director Jacob Appelsmith. "We have heard directly from these businesses that the notices of regulatory relief can give them a boost and help bring more people back to work."On May 15, the ABC issued another change that will allow these businesses to use parking lots, patios, and sidewalks to spread out dine-in customers. The agency says it is also now allowing virtual wine tasting, free alcohol delivery, extended delivery hours, alcohol transactions through pass-out windows or trays, and distilleries to make hand sanitizer approved by the FDA. 1523
